Author's note: Hello lovies 😉 I come here with a new chapter of different. Let me know what you think and what will happen next!
The happiness was instant for Y/N, spreading through her like wildfire, consuming every corner of her heart with its warmth. It was as if she were seeing him for the very first time, as though all the pain and confusion from the past had vanished in an instant. In that moment, the tangled web of heartbreak and misunderstandings unraveled, leaving only the simple truth of his presence.
It felt as though nothing had ever happened with Ivy, as if that chapter of their story had been forgotten, burned away by the light in his eyes. There was no ache, no betrayal lingering between them—just the quiet understanding they had always shared. There was nothing broken, nothing jagged that needed to be pieced back together. For a fleeting, breathless second, the world was whole and unscarred.
Everyone in the room could feel the pull between them, an invisible thread binding Harry and Y/N as their gazes locked and held. The connection was so strong it seemed to hum in the air, a palpable force that neither time nor distance could sever.
Gemma shifted her weight, glancing sideways at her mother. A small, knowing smile tugged at her lips as she leaned toward Anne.
“Fancy a coffee from the cafeteria?” Gemma asked lightly, but there was meaning behind her words.
Anne, ever perceptive, caught on immediately. “That sounds perfect,” she replied, her eyes flicking between Harry and Y/N. Without another word, she stood, smoothing down her skirt and gathering her things.
As they stepped toward the door, Gemma gave Y/N a brief squeeze on the shoulder, a silent show of solidarity. Then she followed her mum out, closing the door quietly behind her to leave the two of them alone.
Y/N stood frozen as the door clicked shut behind Anne and Gemma, the air suddenly heavy with silence. The sounds of the hospital, distant and muted, faded into nothing as her eyes remained locked on Harry. The walls she had built to guard her heart threatened to crumble, brick by fragile brick.
She moved closer, her steps hesitant but filled with purpose, until she was at his bedside. He looked up at her with those familiar green eyes, eyes she had memorized down to every fleck of gold. They held so much—pain, longing, relief—and when he spoke, his voice was hoarse, but warm.
“I thought I’d never see you again,” Harry whispered, his words heavy with emotion. “I thought I’d lost you for good.”
Her breath caught, her heart pounding painfully against her ribs. “You almost did,” she admitted, her voice cracking. She clenched her hands at her sides, her nails digging into her palms to keep from shaking. “I didn’t know what to believe, Harry. You didn’t say anything. You let me think…” Her words trailed off as her throat closed with emotion.
“I was an idiot,” he said quietly, guilt written in every line of his face. “I thought if I didn’t fight, if I didn’t explain, it would hurt you less. I didn’t know how to fix it—fix us—without making it worse.”
Tears welled in her eyes, blurring her vision as her walls gave way. “It hurt more because I loved you. I still love you,” she confessed, the truth slipping free before she could stop it.
Harry’s breath hitched, his hand reaching for hers, trembling with vulnerability. “You do?”
A single tear slipped down her cheek as she nodded, her fingers threading through his. “Of course, I do. That’s why it was so hard to walk away. That’s why it still hurts.”
He tightened his grip, as though holding on to her would tether him back to life. “Y/N, I’m so sorry,” he said, his voice breaking. “For all of it. For not fighting harder. For hurting you.” His own tears fell now, silent trails of regret and longing.
She lifted her free hand to his cheek, her thumb brushing away the tear that had fallen there. “I thought I hated you,” she whispered, “but I never stopped caring. And when I saw you like that… when I thought I might lose you…” Her voice cracked again, and she shook her head. “I can’t lose you, Harry.”
He closed his eyes, her touch grounding him as a tear slipped down his other cheek. “You won’t,” he promised softly. “I swear to you, you won’t.”
They stayed like that for a long moment, their hands intertwined, the weight of unspoken words and shared pain finally lifting. It wasn’t a complete healing, but it was a beginning—a fragile, hopeful start.
Harry opened his eyes again, and they softened as he gazed at her. His thumb moved gently over her knuckles, as if memorizing the feel of her hand in his. “You’ve been here the whole time?”
Y/N gave him a small, shaky smile. “Every second,” she said quietly. “I couldn’t leave you. I kept thinking you’d wake up and be scared or confused… and I wasn’t going to let you be alone.”
Emotion flickered in his expression—something tender and aching and so full of gratitude it made her chest tighten. “You’ve always been there for me” His voice grew softer, his words carrying a weight far heavier than the moment. “Even when I didn’t deserve it.”
Tears welled again, but this time they were warm, not bitter. She tightened her grip on his hand. “Don’t say that. You’ve made mistakes, but you never stopped deserving someone who cares about you.”
Harry took a breath, his gaze searching hers. “You make me better, Y/N. You always have. I just…” He swallowed hard, his eyes falling briefly before he forced them back to hers. “I didn’t know how to hold on without ruining it. Without ruining you.”
The pain in his voice, so raw and genuine, unraveled her further. “You never ruined me,” she whispered. “You made me feel more. More alive, more loved… but you also made me feel more hurt.” She shook her head slightly. “But that’s what love is, isn’t it? It’s messy, and it’s painful, and it’s not always easy. But it’s worth it.”
Harry’s lips trembled, his eyes shining as he nodded. “I don’t care how hard it gets. I want it all. I want everything with you.”
Her heart ached at the vulnerability in his words, and a tear rolled down her cheek as she leaned in closer. “Then fight for it this time,” she whispered fiercely. “Don’t run. Don’t shut me out. Fight for us.”
“I will,” he promised, his voice firm and resolute. “I swear to you, I will.”
Their foreheads touched, and for a long moment, they breathed together, their hearts finally beating in rhythm. It wasn’t a perfect ending. There were still wounds to heal, trust to rebuild.
The fragile peace between them was interrupted by a sharp knock at the door. Y/N pulled back reluctantly, her eyes searching Harry’s face one last time before turning to face the sound.
“Come in,” she said, her voice steady but curious.
The door opened to reveal a man in a dark suit, his demeanor calm yet authoritative. His eyes, a shade of gray that seemed to miss nothing, scanned the room before settling on Harry. He had an air of someone used to command, and when he stepped forward, the tension in the room thickened.
“Harry Styles?” he asked, his tone clipped but not unkind.
Harry straightened slightly, his hand still gripping Y/N’s as if drawing strength from her presence. “Yes.”
The man pulled a badge from his pocket, flipping it open for a brief glance. “Detective Robert Keating, Chicago Police Department.” His eyes flicked to Y/N, then back to Harry. “I’m here to ask you a few questions about what happened to you last night.”
Y/N felt her pulse quicken, her protective instincts flaring. She moved just a step closer to Harry, her body a silent barrier between him and the world. “Is that necessary right now?” she asked, her voice sharp with concern. “He’s just woken up. He needs rest.”
Detective Keating’s gaze was steady. “I understand that, ma’am, but this isn’t something we can wait on. Given the nature of what was found in his system, time is critical.”
Harry exhaled heavily, his free hand brushing through his messy curls. “It’s okay, love,” he murmured to Y/N, squeezing her hand before letting go. He turned his attention to the detective. “What do you need to know?”
The detective pulled out a small notepad and pen. “We’re investigating the presence of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate, GHB, in your system. It’s often associated with recreational drug use or, more concerningly, incidents of assault. Can you recall anything unusual from last night? Any drinks left unattended, anyone offering you anything?”
Y/N’s breath hitched. Her mind raced back to the glass on the nightstand, the one she’d inspected with her heart in her throat. She opened her mouth, but Harry beat her to it.
“I didn’t take anything voluntarily,” Harry said firmly, his eyes never wavering. “I remember drinking whiskey… I think it was handed to me by someone. I can’t remember clearly.”
The detective scribbled something down. “Do you recall who gave it to you?”
Harry’s eyes clouded with frustration. “No,” he admitted. “Everything after that is a blur.”
Y/N clenched her fists, her voice low but resolute. “I found him unconscious. He was alone with a girl—” Her teeth ground at the memory. “Ivy. She was there, and she refused to say what happened.”
Keating’s pen stilled. “Ivy?” He raised an eyebrow. “Does she have a last name?”
Y/N’s jaw tightened. “Yes. Ivy Collins.”
The detective’s expression darkened with recognition, but he didn’t elaborate. “Thank you for your cooperation. We’ll be looking into her connection to this.” He closed his notebook, his tone softening as he addressed Harry. “Rest up. We’ll be in touch if we need anything further.”
As he turned to leave, Y/N called after him. “Detective,” she said, her eyes blazing. “Make sure she’s held accountable.”
The detective nodded, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Will do”
When the door closed behind him, silence filled the room again. Harry turned to Y/N, his expression pained.
Harry’s hand trembled slightly as he reached for hers again, his fingers brushing her skin with a gentleness that seemed at odds with his usual composure. His green eyes, so often sharp and calculating, now brimmed with something raw and unguarded—a vulnerability he rarely allowed anyone to see.
The hospital bathroom door creaked open, and Harry emerged, barefoot and tousled, with steam curling around him like a soft haze. His hospital-issued bathrobe hung loosely around his lean frame, the tie at his waist hopelessly tangled as he tried to keep it closed with one hand. His other hand gripped a towel he was using to dry his unruly curls.
Y/N glanced up from the chair where she’d been scrolling through her phone. The sight of him—disheveled, pink-cheeked from the warm water, and grumbling under his breath—sent a wave of affection straight to her heart. A smile tugged at her lips. “You’re having a bit of a wardrobe malfunction there, aren’t you?”
Harry grunted in frustration, tugging at the tangled knot. “I think this thing’s cursed. Either that, or it’s out to get me.”
Y/N stifled a laugh as she stood and crossed the room. “Here, let me help before you flash the nurses.”
He smirked, the corner of his mouth quirking up mischievously. “Would that really be so bad?”
“Yes,” she said with a teasing eye roll, stepping closer. Her fingers deftly untangled the knot and retied the robe snugly around his waist. “You’re already too charming for your own good. No need to cause more trouble.”
As she tied the last knot, he caught her hands and didn’t let go. His green eyes softened, filled with something deeper than gratitude. “I think trouble’s been following me for a while,” he murmured. “But having you here makes it all feel... easier.”
She felt her cheeks warm as his thumb traced a gentle path over her knuckles. “I’m exactly where I want to be.”
“Your phone has been ringing like crazy while you were in the shower.”
“Spam?” he guessed, leaning back with a tired groan as she unlocked the screen.
“Nope.” Her eyes widened slightly as she scrolled. “It’s from Northwestern University”
His head shot up instantly. “What?”
She turned the phone toward him. “Check your email.”
He held her gaze for a moment, hesitation flickering across his face, before he nodded. “You do it.”
She arched an eyebrow. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” He exhaled slowly, his fingers curling tightly around the blanket. “You’ve got steadier hands than me right now.”
Her heart clenched at the vulnerability in his voice, but she didn’t comment. Instead, she focused on the screen, pulling up the email.
Her hand flew to her mouth as her eyes filled with tears. “Harry...”
“What?” He sat up straighter, his entire body tense.
“You got in!” she cried, her voice trembling with joy. “You got in! They accepted you!”
The tension in his shoulders melted away as the words hit him. He stared at her, stunned, before a slow, incredulous smile broke across his face. “I... I got in?”
“Yes!” She laughed through her tears.
Harry sat back against the pillows, the joy of his acceptance still coursing through him but tinged with a quiet heaviness that refused to be ignored. His hand rested lightly on Y/N’s as if grounding himself, but his mind wandered beyond the room, beyond the flickering lights of celebration and into the shadows of everything that had just happened.
“I should be happier,” he murmured, his eyes fixed on the corner of the ceiling, where a faint crack traced along the plaster. “I should feel like I’m on top of the world.”
Y/N tilted her head, her fingers weaving between his. “You’ve worked so hard for this, Harry. You’ve earned it.”
He let out a breathy chuckle, but there was no humor in it. “I know. God, I know I have. The late nights, the exams, all those hours of anatomy flashcards... I wanted this so badly.” His voice softened, a fragile edge beneath his words. “And now I’m lying here in a hospital bed because someone tried to take it all away from me.”
Her heart clenched as she watched his expression shift—pride flickering into weariness, then into something far more vulnerable. He blinked slowly, his lashes brushing his cheeks as if it were the only way to hide the storm building behind his eyes.
“I’m supposed to be strong,” he whispered. “But it’s hard when I don’t even know how this happened. How I let it happen.”
“Hey,” Y/N said softly, cupping his cheek and drawing his gaze to hers. “None of this was your fault.”
He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “I could’ve been smarter. I could’ve... God, Y/N, if you hadn’t come—”
Don’t,” she interrupted firmly, her thumb brushing his cheek. “Don’t go there. You’re here. You’re alive. That’s what matters.”
His lips pressed into a thin line as his eyes glimmered. “I keep thinking about the what-ifs. About how close I came to losing all of this. My future, you, everything that makes me... me.” His voice broke. “I’ve worked so hard to get out of the dark places, and now it feels like they’re pulling me back in.”
“You’re not” she whispered fiercely. “We’ll help you. Gemma, your mom and I are here for you. Always”
