RKG patrons,

We’re very excited and proud to tell you about our new series, Games Are Good for You.

You can watch the trailer right now, with the first episode coming this Thursday.

So what is it?

Towards the end of summer we were approached by the UK Government – yeah, we were surprised too – and asked if we’d be interested in making a short series about video games and their impact on people’s mental health. 2020 has been a tough year, and we thought this was an important message to tackle.

We’re incredibly proud that Retry (and before it, Prepare To Try) has always been a positive show – it’s all about supporting your friends, overcoming challenges, and never giving up. Over the years, we’ve heard so many stories from you, in comments and in person, about how our show helped you through difficult times. It’s what we’re most proud of, so we wanted to talk and learn more about those issues in a new series.

We were given creative control over the project, and what we’ve come up with is a cross between a Let’s Play and a podcast. In each of the three episodes, we catch up with a good friend of ours and play a new game. All of our guests – Johnny Chiodini, Lucy James, and Simon Miller – are very open about discussing their own mental health, how they’ve coped over the years, and the role video games have played in managing their conditions.

This is sponsored content, but as we’ve said before, having the RKG patreon and your direct support means we never have to take on opportunities we’re offered unless we absolutely believe in them. Here's a post that details exactly what it means when you see #Ad on RKG content.

Games Are Good for You is something we're very proud to have on our channel.

Games Are Good for You – Trailer

We believe games can have a positive effect on your mental health, which feels more relevant in 2020 than ever before. So recently we caught up with three of our mates to play some games and learn how they’ve helped. Watch the trailer for our new series, Games Are Good for You. New episodes weekly from 5 November. --------- If you need someone to talk to, or just have someone listen, TalkLife has built a positive online space where you can talk with others for mental health support. Download the app, and share what’s on your mind: https://www.talklife.co/ Games Are Good For You was produced in partnership with the UK Government.

Christian Priedl

Lovely stuff, lads! Really looking forward to those videos.

Nick Ball

Owned by the Man now... (joking of course this is a lovely idea and you guys will do it really well, but the idea of you being sponsored by the Home Office just makes me laugh)

Matt Hamill

Absolutely love it! Cannot wait to watch it!

Shon Moccles

Absolutely love this idea! Good on you! I just hope it isn't used politically in the future.

Ryan Menzies

Amazing idea, gaming has to be one of the unsung heroes when it comes to mental health. Especially when you have joined the boys on their journey and heard all the slugs who have been inspired by PPT & RKG. I do however, want to know if they arrived in a black helicopter with black suits and aviators?

Jonmichael T Knapp

This looks brilliant! Love the focus on promoting mental health and the good games can do, especially in a period where ones mental health is most stressed.

Michael Haughian

Awww man haven't really seen Simon in anything since the early days of VideoGamer! Very excited for this.

Aidan Nolan

As a consequence of the hostile environment policy, I have had some very difficult and unhelpful dealings with the Home Office. This, combined with the actions and behaviours of the current Secretary of State, meant that this announcement doesn’t sit very well with me. However, I of course still support you guys and hope the project proves to be successful.

James O'Donnell

Boys, this looks amazing. Watching Prepare to Try helped in ways I can't even explain and to this day it's why I'm a Patron. Cannot wait for this. You lads are the gift that keeps on giving

Rafael Costa

Love the idea of the show!!! Great guys!!!

Dan Kilrea

What a nice idea. Look forward to watching it

Drowsy Paladin

This looks really cool. I'm interested to seeing how others like myself use gaming to help cope with the stresses and hardships of life.

Joakim Kollberg

This is absolutely amazing, i can't wait to watch this :D

T_Paine

This is incredible, lads!

Elya

This is fucking wicked, lads. Wish our government was more open about that sort of thing.

Papa Nic is a Wizard

I am so happy for RGK and proud to be part of the community. To the Fools!

Nick Arnst

Finally some good news from the Home Office #givetheboysjobs

Jen Addley

I'm thrilled by the concept of this series, lads, and love the guests you've put together. But I do have to echo the concerns about this being in conjunction with the Home Office, particularly this current iteration. It may be prudent to look into a fund or charity you could support to offset the ick factor? Looking forwards to the series otherwise!

Alex Mann

This looks to be a brilliant idea, looking forward to watching.

Ankeet Mantra

Absolutely love it. I'm also excited to see Johnny after watching his and Aofie's Bloodborne playthrough last year.

Dan O'Shea

Never change boys, you're a real beacon of hope in some dark times, as you have been for the last few years. You've helped me and so many others when we desperately needed companionship, laughter and light. Thank you so much for everything you've done so far, this series is a great idea!

Hannah and Owen

Guys, this is an awesome project, and you have the perfect platform to openly discuss both mental health and the positive impact games can have. While I recognise the concerns with affiliation with the HO some patrons have expressed, ultimately we can’t condemn every action and association the Government make and have. They’ve clearly attempted, in this instance, to do some good, and I don’t blame you at all for taking this opportunity. Besides, as far as I am concerned, you have individually made your own personal political opinions known more than once; not least of all with a rather fabulous recently tee sported by Gav. Throughly look forward to this series guys. Hope all is well with the three of you.

Kai

Obvs proud of the boys and love the premise of this project. I do wonder if the HO is working with other creators or even contacted them or was their first choice a group of exclusively straight white men? Hope to see this kind of offer also extended to female, queer and POC creators who understand personally some issues experienced by those communities.

Kai

Also yah echoing the concerns of some other comments I find it a bit rich and gross on their part that HO is sponsoring this given how many refugee and immigrant lives they’ve screwed over, now they suddenly care about mental health?

Liam O'Dwyer

This is truly brilliant lads. You’ve created such an amazing community and it’s clear how much support you provide people. How many times has a slug written into Shield Up and added that your content has really helped them through difficult times, whether it’s been during lockdown, poor health or their own personal hardships? Very proud of what you’ve accomplished!

raymond

That's your takeaway from this? Your mental gymnastics are on a new level to turn this about immigrants and gender.

Kai

First of all it was a question on HO’s sincerity in addressing mental health if they ignore the many facets of unique challenges impacting different demographics (and a remark on their hypocrisy). And yes as a trans/GNC immigrant I know my own mental health is impacted by govt policies and social interactions because of those identities. You may never have been but please don’t disregard other people’s genuine concerns when it comes to a government sponsored mental health initiative. Obvs glad that the boys are talking about this mental health (like I initially stated) but I think it’s only fair to question and examine government actions as a crucial part of the democratic process. Esp since mental health is an area where governments and big businesses love to spend some money on virtue signaling to make them look good without addressing them on a holistic and constructive level. Can’t tell if you just wanted to ridicule me for asking questions or to illegitimise my concerns but I guess good day to you too 🤷

raymond

i have no issue with your concerns on the home office. i simply think there is a time and a place. questioning the tory government sincerity is pointless, they are never sincere about helping people.

Kevin Sullivan

Saving this for the end of my work day, but the premise of this series alone makes me genuinely proud to have been along for the ride with you guys. You have great hearts & use your platform for good. My line of work often includes clients with very serious mental health struggles, & having gone through some tough ones myself in the past, this brings such Joy to my heart. Keep on keeping on fellas 💜
