Aw hell yeah VENGEANCE saga let’s GOOOO!!! The ending of Six Hundred Strike always gives me chills and it’s my favorite part of the song (I’m not a big fan of the rest of the song tbh). Also next saga has one of my top 3 favorite songs in the musical.

GraysonTodd

I will say, not as an excuse for literally everything else Calypso did, but the keeping Odysseus trapped on the island I'm pretty sure was either fully Zeus, or partially Zeus and partially her curse working on him. Everything else bad, but she was not the full reason he was stuck there.

Regan Borrelli

Honestly I know posidon is petty and all but if someone blinded my son and for 10 years he was praying for me to get vengeance for him after I already failed I wouldn’t be able to get over it either. One thing about mythology also is that the one thing posidon prides himself on his being a good father so honestly I know we are rooting for Odysseus but Posidons crash out was valid

EDHPlayer

Clover’s animatic for NSFLY is the only one I’ll ever watch for the sole fact that Odysseus never once even looks at Kalypso’s direction

A PJO fan's wild headcanons and wierd paralalls I found during this Saga, enjoy: 1. „Im not sorry for loveing you" - This is just the „reverse"-ish of Luke and Annabeth (I am gonna break everyones hearts), the „Family, Luke. You promised." 2. „Dangerous" - A. „Its gonna be dangerous, you're gonna need a mindset change for this" - When I think why the Stoll brothers (not twins, I made that mistake a few times) - and every Hermes kid - are like the way that they are, I remember that THIS GUY is their dad. B. That whole Ody/ Hermes talk has a VERY different ring to it if you take it to a different „Mortal/ God-like entity" duality - Luke as Ody and Kronos as Hermes C. „do what you gonna do" - Luke took that to a personal extreme... ... On the topic of Luke: I would love to find out if they ever talked/ met each other in the afterlife. Since Ody is/ was(?) in Elysium and Luke - while never confirmed - it was heavely implied that he WAS there for a time being... Until he chose to reincarnate... ... Like Bianka (I am not over that btw). Also did Hermes ever talk to Luke when he was in Elysium - Hermes going to the Underworld on a semi-regular basis. 3. „Caribdys" - A. Sylla and him are „neighbours" so she heard Ody sing this banger when he sailed past him. B. We are 3-ish months away from our own journey through the SoM... Perfect (yet unintentionnal on your part) timing vise.

Also that song should just be renamed “Gaslighting the Anthem”

GraysonTodd

Pretty sure that's PJO canon only, not based in the Greek Mythology.

Meghan Ross

This is one of my favorite arcs. The wisdom saga will always be number one to me, but this one is my second favorite.

Åshild

That was made up by rick riordan

8:42 funny you should say that, here’s an excerpt from my copy of The Odyssey: “The enchantress in her beauty fed and caressed me, promised me I should be immortal, youthful, all the days to come; but in my heart I never gave consent though seven years detained.”

EDHPlayer

So in The Odyssey, Odysseus could have left the island if he had a ship or boat or whatever. Kalypso just wouldn’t let him. It took Athena asking her father to allow Odysseus to return home. Odysseus wasn’t trapped for seven years, he was KEPT PRISONER. From my copy of The Odyssey: “Her ladyship Kalypso clung to him in her sea-hollowed caves — a nymph, immortal and most beautiful, who craved him for her own. And when long years and seasons wheeling brought around that point of time ordained for him to make passage homeward, trials and dangers, even so, attended him even in Ithaka, near those he loved. Yet all the gods had pitied Lord Odysseus, all but Poseidon, raging cold and rough against the brave king till he came ashore his own land.” Also what curse?

GraysonTodd

I was referring to the "curse" that keeps Calypso on her island, like the animatic shows, but I guess it's more just her punishment. But gotcha, I didn't know the full Odyssey story, just pulling from what I can of the version Jorge wrote here.

FrisbeeDude42

Ok so fun point of order, an apology in Greece was not an “I’m sorry”, it was an explanation of why you did the thing that the other person is mad at you for. So Ody DID apologize to Poseidon, Poseidon just didn’t care and killed then anyways

Süppchen

Jorge is actually working on another musical rn about the illiad which is about the troy war (in which Odysseus fought) and stuff. So maybe that could be another reaction series in the future. 👀 The next saga is one of my favs so excited and also sad about it ending but all things must come to an end. 😭

EDHPlayer

Apologia was a legal defense, not a legitimate means of excusing oneself.

astrozia

Morgan: I'm ready "I don't think you're ready...."

Chloe Small

So you reacted to Gaslighting: The Song exactly how I thought you would. Consider me validated ^^

ANTHONY ASHMALL

I will say I disagree on the take on Ody’s lines in get in the water it was less “I’ll forgive you if you forgive me” moreso “maybe YOU should learn to forgive” as you saw in the animatic he was tired but Ody decided to say essentially in less words “you are the one who came back to here so you are in the wrong so what if I blinded your son you need to forgive ME” and this is also a mortal saying this TO A GOD

Adrian

I honestly can’t really hate Poseidon. What parent wouldn’t be out for blood and revenge in his shoes? And that’s not even the old reason he has beef with Ody.

Caroline Adams

Jorge is working on the Iliad musical which takes place before the Odyssey so Thats exciting

tapdisneyintome

Will be mostly skipping this one as I tend to feel quite meh on this saga but glad you like Dangerous!

Thunder

And for Athens specifically, several hundred years after the time period in which the Odyssey was set.

FrisbeeDude42

Ah, fair. Though I would definitely take on a sort of legal defense persona if I ever had to reason with a divine being

A big part of the Calypso discourse is that a lot of Epic fans know her story only from modern adaptations and have never read the source material. There's a commonly cited story that Calypso was imprisoned on Ogygia as a punishment for supporting the Titans, including her father Atlas, during the war between the Titans and the gods, and Odysseus being trapped there is at least partially because of the gods' curse preventing Calypso from leaving. The Odyssey says nothing of the sort, and neither does any other historical source I've been able to find. This portrayal only appears in modern adaptations. The Odyssey clearly and explicitly states that Calypso imprisoned and raped Odysseus entirely of her own volition without even a hint of tragic backstory to try to excuse it. The wind bag doesn't come back up in the Odyssey. Odysseus doesn't even meet Hermes this time- Hermes just orders Calypso to release him, and then there's a lengthy and detailed description of Odysseus collecting wood and building the raft. In the original, Charybdis is half of a two-part monster along with Scylla. When the crew passes through the narrow strait between them, they have to stick closer to Scylla's cliff because while she'll kill six men of the crew, if they get too close to Charybdis's island, the whirlpools and waves will destroy the whole ship. Odysseus DOES pass by Charybdis again, but it's immediately after Zeus destroys the ship and kills the last of his crew. Since he's clinging to a piece of debris alone, he has no one to sacrifice to Scylla, so he has no choice but to pass by Charybdis. He survives the whirlpool by clinging to a tree (the tree still shows up in the animatic with Odysseus shooting an arrow into it) and riding the wave afterwards, and that's what carries him to Ogygia. All he has to deal with after leaving Ogygia is Poseidon slapping him around, and even then, in the source material, it's just a storm, rather than Poseidon confronting Odysseus directly. Odysseus and Poseidon never actually meet in the source material (the only major gods Odysseus directly meets are Hermes and Athena). Poseidon sends storms and monsters after Odysseus, but doesn't directly fight him. Even if they had met, Homer (or whoever actually wrote the Homeric epics- their authorship is a matter of some debate among historians), a man who believed the gods actually existed and were both willing and able to smite poets for blasphemy, would not have told a story about his great hero beating the shit out of a god, winning, and being in the right for it. The gods can't change their nature. They represent the eternal personifications of abstract concepts, and the ancient Greeks did actually worship them. Character development isn't really a thing in religion. If the gods existed, then a poet writing about how one changed his ways to become a better person with a mortal's help and inspiration instead of being right all along would just be asking to get zapped. Half of Odysseus's journey back to Ithaca is cut from Epic. After leaving Ogygia, his raft is destroyed by Poseidon's storm, but he washes up on the island of Phaeacia, where a local river goddess brings him ashore. Athena then sends a dream to the princess of the Phaeacians inspiring her to bathe in the river the next morning, where she finds Odysseus and brings him back to the palace. He initially doesn't reveal his full identity, but breaks down after the court musician sings about the sack of Troy and Odysseus's work with the Trojan Horse, at which point he recounts his voyages since leaving Troy, and the Phaeacians decide to give him a ship, crew, and various assorted treasure to take home to Ithaca. This is actually where all his adventures that make up the vast majority of most adaptations of the Odyssey are covered. The Odyssey starts in medias res- in fact, the term "in medias res" was coined to describe the Homeric epics. The poem is split into 24 books, with books 1-4 roughly corresponding to the Wisdom Saga of the musical, books 5-8 roughly corresponding to the Vengeance Saga, books 9-12 covering all of the first six sagas, and then books 13-24- half of the entire poem- are the final saga of the musical. This is pretty typical of adaptations of the Odyssey. They're almost always in chronological order, and they almost always spend far more time showing Odysseus's journey from Troy and a lot less time showing the aftermath of that journey.

WyvernKing99

An important thing to remember is that the Greek God's more or less cannot change their nature. They were made to represent and explain abstract concepts, as well as reflections of how society was. They were seen as, essentially, very powerful, immortal beings with very human flaws, who could rarely be convinced they were in the wrong reguardless, that the Greeks believed controlled every aspect of the world. And that's why they worshiped them, because they thought staying in their favor would bring good fortune. Writing about a god learning a lesson from a mortal most likely would've been seen as heresy, and most (with a few exceptions) wouldn't have attempted it for fear of getting smote on the spot.

13:44. Moment of joy in Morgan's eyes. Let's go😁 14:50. Agreed. Of all the 5 songs in this saga, this is my Nr. 1!! "I'm not sorry for loving you" and "Charybdis" (hope I spelled that correct) share last place in this Saga. 31:35. I'm 99% certain, that this is the last time we'll see Polites. I hope you're doing okay Morgan🫂. Cause I ain't😭 36:03, "🖕Get F*cked Bro🖕! Get F*cked!" 😂👏🏼😂👏🏼😂 36:50, *dark music* "👀 Oh I don't like that look in his- in his eyes... OH, he's just gonna torture him forever?... Scary Odysseus is back." And I'm here for it😈😅 37:30, "He's literally threatening a God! A God! To torture him the rest of his existence unless he calls off the storm! DUDE HAS GOT BALLS THE SIZE OF BOULDERS, PULLING This Sh*t Off!" True. That's, very accurate description of this scenario Morgan. But um, if you think Odysseus is scary NOW... you're not ready for the next Saga! Cause half of that is DARK!!! And not in a fun way! And should speak LEVELS!! Last edit: I really liked this reaction. Yeah, the first song, not my favorite given what Calypso has done, but I feel like a pinch🤏🏼. A teeny tiny pinch of sympathy for her. Yes, what she did to Ody was F*CKED, but she was alone on that Island for her whole life. Again, I'm not defending her, I just, try to see it from her point of view. As I already said, Dangerous is my favorite of these five songs. Hermes' voice IS an earworm, so it gets stuck in one's head! I didn't care much for Charybdis. Get in the Water is a cool song. And it sealed Poseidon as irredemable! He could've let go of his anger and went home. But nooo🙄. And 600 Strikes goes HARD on the instrumental!! I love it!! Anyways, I'm looking forward to the next Epic reaction (despite my nervousness😅) and I hope you enjoy it just as much as the rest of us has. See you in your next reaction video Morgan. Bye👋🏼😊

Okay, even in the original mythology, the gods were not considered " all powerful" or "all good" that we think of with modern Christianity, it is rare. But there are some myths where gods are in the wrong for example in the myth of eros and psychy Zeuspublicly condemns Aphrodite and her cruelty at a divine assembly and forbids her from harming Psyche again. Also Hera absolutely faced consequences in the Hephaestus throne myth, even if she didn’t explicitly apologize or admit fault. her initial cruelty (casting Hephaestus out of Olympus for being lame) directly comes back to trap her — literally — when she sits in the throne he built. Oh yeah, also, they definitely didn't fear the mocking the gods in literature, for example, Aristophanes in his play, the birds explicitly mocked them as "dwellers" and has the birds take over godhood

WyvernKing99

1. I never said they were "all good." I said they were reflections of how what was, rather than what was ideal. But yes, they did think the gods controlled everything. 2. I never said that the gods never faced consequences, just that admiting to have wronged mortals was practically unheard of. Receiving justice handed down from a higher god is entirely different. 3. Of course SOME would point out the hypocrisy and faults of the gods, but unless that God's name was Ares, (the butt of many jabs,) MOST typically avoided it, as many of the myths taught them that such hubris would not be taken lightly. Everything I said is a generalization. There will always be exceptions, but my point still stands that this is typically how it was.

Raine

Watching you react to Calypso was really entertaining 😂 I mean, I completely agree with you! The look of disgust on your face while Calypso sang was simply beautiful 😂💗 Also I've never seen your smallest violin before so that was an amazing treat to see and such perfect use😂 Hermes' songs are amazing and Dangerous is one of my favs in the whole musical. The simultaneous "NO" you and Odysseus screamed when Poseidon showed up had me dead!😂 Amazing. Can't believe you're gonna be done next week! Can't wait to see your reaction!

d.katsuki.bakugou

She was put on this island because her father sided with the titans. She was 5 when she was put on the island. Just some info

Seamus

That’s actually just something that Rick Riordan created for his series. In the original version she was there by choice.

d.katsuki.bakugou

I was just telling it from what my Ancient greek Mythology teacher told us. The story of the three main gods ( Zeus hades and poseidon) fought their father.

LikeCat

Also am I the only one who can imagine Lil-Manual Miranda sing „Dangerous"... No? Just me?

LikeCat

I saw a comment under the OG „Dangerous" song: „This is Odysseus, he loves his personal space and this is Hermes, he also loves Odysseus' personal space" - I usually don't really care for comments under videos (especially under music/ musicals) - good kind or bad. But this haf me laughing out loud for minutes

Alexis Cardillo

Yeah the more I re-listen to Calypso songs the more I realize she never never truly apologizes for her actions, " "If" I came on too strong" "My love is too strong for you" just about all her "apologies" I'm sorry "you" felt this way not truly apologizing or showing any remorse her how she treated him. Man one last saga to go and I am so excited to see your reaction to it

FuzzBird

Oh man, I can't believe next saga is the last one! Buckle up lol. Maybe get the old punching bag out for a certain song 😬 And perhaps some tissues for others! ❤️

Aiste Laurynaityte

without getting "political" about Calpyso, I wanna explain that the reason she falls in love with Odysseus is because the gods curse her to, there might be multiple versions, but thats the one i know, it's a punishment for both of them I think. Not getting into any personal opinions to keep things chill.

elly

i absolutely do not feel for calypso at all. in the odyssey, (i believe, correct me if im wrong) she would compel him to sleep with her at night and he longed for his wife during the day. obviously we have a very modern take on these stories now but with that knowledge and the modern outlook, i physically cannot feel bad for her at all

elly

also! in mythology, scylla and charybdis are actually on opposite sides of a narrow straight that sailors needed to pass. the captains would need to make a choice to get close to one of the monsters to avoid the other and while theres no “correct” choice per say, scylla would take 6 men, one for each head, while charybdis would bring down entire fleets. odysseus knew which to choose in the odyssey due to circe’s advice, ironic because circe made scylla into the monster she is!

SauceyRed

The end part of this animatic of Six Hundred Strike song is actually pretty good, but the lighting and such in the one Jorge commissioned for the watchalong livestream is just so fucking peak.

Asphodel

Thats only in the percy jackson series, its not how it actually was for calypso in the actual odyssey

Asphodel

So here is my thoughts on the apology to poseidon back in ocean saga. Poseidon was never going to let Odysseus go, he was never going to show him mercy, he drives that point in by saying "the line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible, so close your heart, the world is dark and ruthlessness is mercy". He is outright telling Odysseus that he was naive to think the apology was actually going to work. Odysseus could have made the worlds best apology and it still wouldnt have made a difference.

Phoenix_mercury

Yup, theirs literally lines like "during his days he wept on the beach longing for home whilst at night he lay with her, unwilling lover alongside lover all too willing" for 7 years... Theirs not a soul in existence that can make me feel bad for her

Phoenix_mercury

That's pjo only, original calypso just forced herself on ody because she could(mortal Vs a goddess)

Phoenix_mercury

Yup her songs are those that take away the melody and just read the lyrics and their a lot darker than people want to acknowledge(other than those who see straight through her bs like mortius)

Phoenix_mercury

Omg that's brill! And yup, personal space? What's that?🤣🤣

Phoenix_mercury

Something I see a *lot* of people doing is "humanising" her time on the island "it's 100 years of course she's lonely" uh no, she's thousands of years old, humans don't live 100+ so obviously that sounds like a lot to us but to gods ect? That's a lunch break, to take a page from mads(madnbooks) page about poseidon and GITW about it's been 10 years, obviously that's a lot to humans, a child can reach adulthood in that time, but to deity's? That's barely a snack break

ItsSimmeRin

Get in the water was a TikTok song a couple years ago and legit it became an Audio I could not get out of my freaking head and that was before knowing what epic was 🤣🤣 legit would walk around the house just saying “get in the water” over and over again 🤣🤣🤣

cashette

If you want a tragedy review hadestown

libmrducks

imo, Calypso's song (the song itself, not her) is to 1) give context for her actions (NOT excuse them) and 2) show how utterly beaten down Ody has become over the 7 years. he can't even speak. so like I don't defend her. and I don't like her. and I just see the context for her actions, ya know? in her song, she's absolutely trying to excuse her actions. I like the nickname "gaslight anthem" for her song lol
