I can't point out all of them, but episode 8 has a lot of homages to old aminations and such. The reception committees that greet Gregory is a reference to The Wizard Of Oz when Dorothy enters Munchkin Land and everyone greets her. The black circle framing is a reference to how old film would look with black borders fading in (although I can't at all blame you for thinking it was a telescope or something).

I've rewatched this series many time still no clue what exactly the turtles means lmao

Chapter 7: 12:42, *gasp* "NO!" I did the exact same reaction Morgan. I had to freaking re-watch from this episode till the last episode. I didn't find anything significant about the black turtles. Maybe it's like an Easter egg or something. Like, there's a hidden Mickey mouse in every Disney movie. 17:25. Tiny bit of a spoiler here. You'll see, what the Beast looks like👀. It's a "blink and you'll miss it" kinda moment. And I wish I had blinked!! Gods, the Beast is CREEPY😱!! Chapter 8: 22:50. Greg didn't die here. He is having a lucid dream. That explains why it's so... Him 30:17-30:23. Your face going from sorta calm, to shocked and scared. Bravo👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 31:17, "Yo this show F*cks with my head!" It really does. It makes us rethink EVERYTHING!! Once we think we have an answer, it turns out we were COMPLETELY WRONG!!! You're going to be mind f*cked in the next episode/chapter! I'm telling ya, it answers SO MANY QUESTIONS!!! "Into the Unknown" No Kidding!! 32:00, *gasp👀*. Accurate reaction to that! 33:33. I got nothing😐. No idea of what to say about that. Last edit: I liked this reaction. But I'm more eager to see your next/last reaction to this show, cause I bet you going to do a lot of this "😲😳" face. Anyway, I hope you're having a lovely day. And I'm SO looking forward to your KOG reaction🔵👑🔵. See ya then Morgan. Bye✌🏼😁

Tim Curry as Auntie Whispers. Weird choice, but he nailed it for being unsettling. Babes in the Woods always throws me with the tonal shift. The old-timey animation style is quite impressive though.

The black circle is an old old animation thingy, like magic lantern old.

G W Bear

Oh neat, I though it was to do with film borders

Dinker

I wanted it to do with like old animations on like mutoscopes but I'm not sure. Mostly it's early animation mixed with a heavy dose of Nemo in Dreamland, but past that I can't say.

Doctor Babylon

It wasn't heaven. 2nd Corinthians 11: 14 "Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light" The Queen of the Clouds was The Beast in disguise, tricking Greg into surrendering his soul. You thought Greg's innocence would protect him but you were wrong.

Jenna Ortega did voice-work in “Babes in the Wood” btw I dunno who she was tho

This show is so crazy. The babes in the wood episode is probably one of my least favorite just because I dont care for the old timey cartoon part, but the rest of it is still so good. And this show just perplexes me every time I watch it. I never know what to make of it. Its unsettling and so fascinating. So glad you enjoyed (?) these episodes. Can't wait for the next one.

So funny story: In a making-of special on the DVD release of the show, the black turtles were revealed to actually be a last-minute addition because the writers weren't sure what to have the dog in episode 1 cough up to return to normal (they knew they wanted it to be SOMETHING black and gross-looking, but they weren't sure until someone suggested a small, black turtle). This of course led to "okay well the audience is gonna wanna know what's up with the random turtle beyond it being a canine choking hazard, so what are we gonna do?" Their solution? To pepper in black turtles here and there and EVERYWHERE throughout the world of The Unknown, and when asked by viewers, simply say the turtles are "a loose thread in the quilt" (referencing how the turtles didn't "seamlessly" fit into the plot). An important thing to remember about Over The Garden Wall is that, as fantastical and fairytale-esque the show can get, there is ONE thing that is VERY realistic about it, that one might even say is a good lesson (if any) to take away from it: You won't get ALL the answers you want before your time to leave this world comes... and that's okay. Sometimes, you will catch a glimpse of something that catches you off-guard and defies any explanation you might try to come up with, and you'll have to simply... *accept* that you probably won't ever get to know the answer. Maybe someone somewhere understands it, but it won't hurt you to not be the one to know. ... oooor maybe I'm just reading too far into it. I love this show with all my heart, and I'm glad to see there's still folks all these years later experiencing it for the first time. Have a great Spooky Month!
