Repunzel’s initial reaction to realizing the stabbington brothers were back in her kingdom was totally valid. I mean the brothers have a history of kidnapping people for money. If it wasn’t for the brothers being so incompetent, the brothers actually would have been some of the scariest Disney villains.

On Eugene's end, he probably wasn't or isn't ready to have a parent in his life right now. On Edmund's end, he wants to bond with his son. But, you can't force a connection to be made. I would guess Eugene's name got changed when at the orphanage to hide his identity as a prince. Poor Eugene somehow has a worse name. He truly has terrible luck.
