The gentleman is a water genaisi A water elemental related humanoid. Hes just always wet. Fire genasi tend to be hot and sometimes on fire, earth ones are always dusty or got a smooth hard body.

So the guy who Yasha is getting visions of looks to be a dark elf, which is the same species as Essek and most of the Kryn Dynasty. So not a demon, but still a shady fucking dude. Yeah, I wouldn't call the King stupid. He is, but it's more that he's a war-mongering racist who's overjoyed at having a weapon of mass destruction to use against their biggest adversary. Trent knows the audience he's playing to, all too well.

Essek basically rolled high intelligence, but low wisdom. Don't get me wrong, it was stupid for him to ever think he could trust Trent, but I understand and relate to his desperation to find a cure. I don't know too much about this part of the campaign, but I'm sure there was something (most likely the Bright Queen and her beliefs) preventing him from studying the Beacon in it's own kingdom. Getting it outside the kingdom was likely the only way, and the Volstruckers had the ability to do that. So, he took the chance.

Yeah, I'd say "Grooming" or "indoctrination" are the right words for what Trent does to his students. It's sad byt true. Also, "Don't steal from happy people" is taken directly from the campaign, but they cut out the second half; "Only steal from grumpy people."

I think what the king meant when he said "There's more to life than knowledge." is that seeking it out can lead to big consequences, isn't always worth the risk, and that one must have the wisdom to know when to stop. Knowledge and wisdom are two different things after all.
