I think thats a perfect way to sum up Winter. She is cold and distant seeming. And not in the way where if you get to know her she acts like a different person but she does care, just her caring comes off different. Shes the type who would pack your bags or get you items for a trip as a show she cares instead of talking about how the trip will be and hope hou have fun.

I think Illyia wasn't told by the school to pass but by her parents. Still a crappy system Just adds to the angst there. Policy of the primary school isnt exactly known but my guess is if faunus were allowed they faced too much discrimintion for it to be a practical option. Its also possible her family found a way to forge the paperwork and got her in that way. My main reason for thinking her parents told her that is itnwas them who "found a way to enroll her". Theybwere trying to give their child thenbest chance in life and it has real world parallels of people trying to do that (look at Sinners for an example). Also I think you confused the Church of Latter Days Saints with Westboro Baptist chuch for protesting soldiers funerals. LDS certably has issues. That just isnt one of them

Nice catch with noticing with Weiss's short in the scar being missing. Somehow, not a lot of people tend to notice that detail. Another subtle detail is the fact that her ponytail is straight, as opposed to it being on the side, a sign she hasn't yet begun her rebelliousness against her father. Yeah, you've probably noticed before with some of the redesigns of the Grimm going into Volume 4, like the Beowolves. But as seen here, the ursa got the biggest redesign, closer in appearance to an actual bear's skeleton. And yeah, Yang was certainly badass in that short. But notice how reckless she was, taking unnecessary hits just to fuel her Semblance. Most of them she could've avoided, especially her jumping in and getting chomped by the ursa. So we've seen Yang at one of her most reckless moments, and it'll serve as nice point of reference going into Volume 5 and seeing how much Yang has grown since then. And Blake's short, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say Illia's given her backstory. But in seriousness, this definitely shows how much Blake interacts with others, to the point where her best and worst qualities can be seen depending on the person she's interacting with. Compare that to when she first arrived at Beacon, and she was seen as pretty distant, almost bland. She didn't have any connections to bring her inner self out, having to put up a protective face to keep others out. And her first big moment when she shows some eagerness was when the team were decorating their dorms, and she took joy in that. So we look at where Blake is at now, and you can tell Sun has been a good influence to her, seeing as she's been more open as a result, and makes her relationship with Illia much more complex as a result.

Great reaction as always! Very observant to the other characters in the shorts! Don't worry about being confused by the time jumping I think it took a lot of us a minute to realize that these were set in the past hehe. We never get shown or told about any friends Weiss may have had. Other than Klein. But in Volume 2 she spoke of how people would always try to get close to her because of her family name. But like Henry they never knew or cared about the real her. I always assumed that's what that line in the song was referring to. Oh! Speaking of Henry, he's not important but do remember his name. We meet a relative of his later in the series. Oh! And a fun fact about Ilia, her name means rainbow~ 🌈

I love that these shorts were also just a good excuse to get their V1-3 models into the Maya engine, and give us some little flashbacks to before they went to Beacon. Weiss Short: Path to Isolation (Mirror Mirror pt 0.5) is such a good song. Also, of the three I think this has my favorite fight choreography. It's very dance like. That one wide shot with her bouncing from Summon to Summon is masterful. Crwby were just flexing at this point. This seems to take place before even her initial color trailer where she fought the suit of armor (Arma Gigas), seeing as she doesn't even have her scar yet and she's still in her V1 outfit like you noticed. Then there's just how she acts during the fight. She's stopping to admire her weapon, she's showing off a lot more than we've ever seen her do. Also, first time seeing Winter in the new engine. Hello, my queen. Blake Short: I've seen a lot of people comparing Ilia's story to that of a kid of two different ethnicities being raised as one or the other because they pass for one more than the other. I can't speak to this personally (I'm white as snow) but I enjoyed reading people's comments about this and how Ilia's story hit a chord with them back when this aired. Action wise this short isn't spectacular but this one really was just focused on giving us Ilia lore, and setting up the potential conflict for Blake. I, too, love Ilia's voice. Cherami does such a good job, and gives her this nice raspy quality. It's great. And then we only get a snippet of Smile at the end of the short. Not one of my fav songs but that bit they play is a banger. Yang Short: Showing off one of Yang's most fatal flaws, her willingness to throw herself in front of danger to protect her loved ones even if she gets hurt in the process. Taking the hits so others don't have to. Oh, my sweet girl. Her semblance is made for that, sure, but...even that has it's limits. Ignite is also just a banger of a song. A great Yang anthem.

It's' NEVER said in the show but Weiss is singing about her grandfather who passed away. He was the only family member that she was that close with. Also that was the moment when Ruby discovered her Semblance - that's why she fainted.

The songs from each short in the order you watched them in: Path to Isolation, Ignite, Smile. I do love the transition from Ilia telling Blake "Don't be I broke their teeth" to "show them how you smile" played over the end card there. And Smile is interesting bc the song is about Ilia from the perspective of her parents who died in the mine explosion

One thing most people agreed about the weiss family, the Schnee, is that they represent the 4 responsive ways of a traumatic relationship, in this case, an abusive father: Fight: Seen in Weiss, early on, her defensive mechanism was aggression, control, and an explosive temper, driven by a need to feel empowered to avoid being hurt. she started to heal on this thanks mostly to ruby's dumb behavior. The white trailer is this too, she HAD to fight the geist grimm armor to 'prove' his father that she was capable of being a huntress, his dad put that tests as an "impossible" test, but she beat it anyway and earn her way out Flight: Seen in Winter Schnee. Her solution to household abuse was to literally run away and isolate herself in the Atlesian military to almost never speak with her family Freeze: Seen in the mother. This response causes immobilization. She coped by completely dissociating, self-isolating in the manor, and ignoring the world, getting into alcoholism and total disassociation of her own kids. She basically just let him do whatever he wants as long as she gets to not be annoyed directly by him. She is probably the more depressed of them all... Fawn: Seen in Whitley. Fawning involves pacifying the abuser. To survive in a hostile home environment, Whitley tries to obey and serve in every aspect he can to the abuser, to his father Jacques, to stay safe and "maintain a false control." So even if he seems like a brat, he is probably in the same situation as Weiss but dealing with it differently. Imagine hisnpov, he only has weiss since his mom dont put attention to them and winter leave them... then weiss leave him too, leave him alone with their dad... in the family portrait, whitley was the only smiling one because he was fawning

No problem!! You’re the first reactor I’ve ever seen actually analyze the lyrics WHILE WATCHING which I can’t express enough how much I appreciate. Not only is the music in this show just amazing, it’s also so important to the characterization and world building. RWBY is a massively enhanced experience if you watch it like you’re watching a musical—the choreography and music is an essential storytelling element. Edit: Casey Lee Williams has been in my top on Spotify for years. Love the music in this show so much 😭

My guess is many Faunus hide it when interacting with humans. The way Illia presents it, as the obvious option, implies that those who can pass at least try to instead of joining the white fang.

Hii, Just wanted to clarify something, cause it seems to be some misunderstanding about the aura stuff. ( If I'm wrong feel free to correct me though) But I've noticed several times you talk about the characters projecting their aura ( when we see the glitching colored thingy around them) And it seems to me you think this is how they protect themselves, but it's quite the opposite. When this happens, their aura weakens or break, and they can no longer use it to protect themselves as they usually do before that... I don't know if that makes sense. But yeah, for the sake of the story, just know whan that happens, it's never a good sign

I've been catching up over the last couple days cuz I knew you were starting V5 this week and it's one of my favorites (outside of the arc capstone volumes anyway) and I didn't want to still be behind, lol. I did want to note something *really* important from behind the scenes going into this volume, cuz it gets a lot of hate from certain folks and I wanted to make sure you are aware going into it. After these shorts were released, it was discovered that a LARGE portion of this volume's budget had been embezzled by a member of staff to fund his own project, so RWBY V5 was financially struggling to get produced and they had to cut corners at times just to get the show out. Notably, this effects the fights later in the volume, where they had to make choices about what was important enough to be a foreground fight, what needed to be kept largely in the background... and just generally speaking what things were going to need to get moved to a later volume altogether.

Huh, I'd written a comment and it seems to have disappeared when the page reloaded and I don't have the time rn to redo the whole thing so just a quick, important note. Volume 5 is really good/one of my favs, but it struggles a little cuz a bunch of the budget got embezzled, which wasn't discovered until after these shorts released. So just something to keep in find going forward.

I love the overall commentary, but your knowledge of MAGA is lacking. We don't hate people of color. Marc Rubio. We don't hate gay people. Scott Bessent. We don't hate Trans people. We want our children not to be asked if they feel like a girl or boy by teachers at school. Leave the kids alone. I love RWBY. Why? Because they sprinkle in real life topics, but don't compromise the story to appeal to one set of ideals. There's good, bad, and several shades of gray.

I actually got triggered by that comment Morgan said. I was mormon most of my life, until I left, as a gay man, it was veeery difficult for me. And I no longer believe in the things I used to. But though I disagree now with them, I wouldnt wish bad things upon them. My brother is still a part of it and he's a very openminded man with a kind heart. all my family was very supportive actually. especially since my cousin ( who was my best friend as well) took his own life being gay too . He was mormon too, I still blame the church for that, But I still wouldn't wish bad things to their members,... ( My goodness, was not easy to write that)

That’s mostly because they became incredibly irrelevant and unsuccessful since the cult’s leader died. His son tried to take over the role but he lacked the charisma and organizational skills, so it’s just faded into pure obscurity. AFAIK they haven’t made any significant appearances in years. Either that or people just wised up and stopped paying attention to their antics.

Props to you for bringing up the subject but yeah, I tend to just gloss over portions where they get really political especially against more right-leaning talking points. All for the sake of peace and order on their own platforms. It's better that way given how almost everything else out there on the internet is a political dumpster fire.
