Hey guys, it's time for another dev log, and I have a bit more to say than in the last one!

First, I'm happy to report that I've had a very productive couple of weeks! Since the last dev log I've completed another 200 renders, bringing the current total up to roughly 1500 now. However, the lion's share of my time has been spent on animation.

The new animation method I mentioned a while ago is taking more time than I expected, which is partly why I ended up pushing my target release date back, however it's opening up a lot of new possibilities for animated scenes. This update will include five in total, a new record, for which so far I have completed 45 videos. I'm currently part way through animating the third scene, and I have one small one, and then one very big one at the end of the update left to go.

UI improvements

Beyond the story content, I've also started working on implementing a bunch of new UI features designed by the same person who did the total UI overhaul a few updates back. These are mostly little improvements that have been requested by players since the last major UI work, but I think it all adds up to making the game nicer to play! (skip past the bullet points if you don't want to read the full list)

First, when starting a new game there will be a new screen for selecting a specific day to start from (WORK IN PROGRESS):

The different chapters will split between the planned time skips that I've mentioned before, and the window at the bottom will allow you to start from any day you want, instead of being limited to a specific update like with the current menu system.

Next, a few minor additions:

Added Left/Right buttons to the image gallery and character bio screens so that you can easily scroll through the stuff you've unlocked (this one has been requested quite a bit!)

The save/load screen will now highlight the current page at the bottom, and will scroll the bottom numbers when you go beyond page 10 - not something I'd ever thought about, but this is another frequent request from people who make loads of saves.

The main textbox will now become scrollable if you increase the font size. At the moment, increasing the font size much beyond default just mangles everything!

Added alt text across the whole UI - this is the text used by screen readers, which was requested by a blind player.

Finally, we've fixed a bunch of minor bugs (like the "mute all" button on the audio section messing with your in-game font size!), and made minor performance improvements to the load times of the bio and gallery pages.

4k game version

I was discussing the game recently on the Cosy Cafe discord server (feel free to join it if you want to chat!) and the subject of a 4k version of the game came up. It just so happens that I actually do all of my raw rendering in 4k, so it would be possible for me to make a 4k version of the game... This would come with a few caveats, however.

First, not all of the 4k renders have had post work done on them (the final stage of cleaning them up using photoshop and other image editing software) so it would take some time to do that.

Next, the file size would be huge. When 0.13 comes out, the total render count will be somewhere in the region of 17,000. Think 100GB+ for the 4k version. With that in mind, this would be limited to desktop only (so no android).

All in all, it would probably take me a couple of weeks of dev time to put this together. So the main reason I'm bringing it up here is to ask you all if you'd be interested in it? I'm more than happy to do it, but if the file size puts everyone off then the 2 weeks would be better spent working on new game content.

Patreon currency changes

This one is just a minor PSA more than anything. Nothing to worry about:

Someone asked recently about me changing the patreon tier pricing, which confused me as I haven't changed them at all since I started. After looking into it a bit, it turns out it's just currency fluctuations. As some of you may know, I'm English, so my tier prices are actually set in pounds and then converted to other currencies. Patreon update their conversion rates once or twice a year, which is why you might see a little fluctuation if you look. But, to the part that they wanted me to clear up:

THIS DOES NOT EFFECT YOUR ONGOING SUBSCRIPTION.

Whatever you agreed to pay when you signed up is what you will continue to pay. It won't change without you being asked/informed, and I have no plans to change the tier prices.

Conclusion

And I think that's everything for this one. We're slowly closing in on the release of version 0.13 at last. I think for the amount of content it has probably been pretty standard, but I feel like I've been working on this one for ages. Possibly because I've also been doing a lot of the detailed planning for the updates that come after it, and I'm really excited to start working on some of the story in those!

There's gonna be at least one more dev log before the release, at which point I should finally be able to give you a somewhat accurate release date.

So, until next time, and as always, thank you for your support!

Bro I can already tell 0.13 is gonna be so peak 🔥. This actually looks amazing. The new animation style sounds really good too :). Thanks for the devlog Cosy ❤️

Zynergy

Stand proud, you cooked with the UI 🔥❤️. Thank you for the log, Cosy. Have a wonderful day.

CHUKLZ101

I'm glad all my itch games are on a 5tb driver. That 4k sounds amazing

Spawn of Apathy

Don't mind me, just freeing up 100GB+ on my drive for .13, sorry other AVNs

Clayton Kaduk

I have more than 100+ gb available on mobile and would happily use them for 4k . Although I don't know if my phone can render 4k lol

Jersey Rick

I wondered when I was going to start using my 14TB hard drive...lol btw...I like the UI changes. I've played through to the current update quite a few times, and made a lot of saves.

Cosy Creator

The main problem would be the 2GB APK file size limit - you'd basically have to download a new app for every in-game day! (And it would be a huge amount of work for me to put that together!)

Clayton Kaduk

Maybe one day I will build a new PC. Unlikely ATM but maybe someday

IbeGenedammit!

Thanks for all your efforts Cosy, it really shines in your story and art!!

Chris Blaylock

First, thanks for the info. We love getting new information about our favorite AVN. Second, the choose your point to start the story from thing is great, but you know I'm just going to start over from the beginning anyway. I'm addicted at this point. Third, the File size could be half a terabyte, and I would still download it. So 4k yes please. I am happy to be getting so much content in the space of a couple days, but I am sad because I want to get to the next founders meeting already and see how that goes. But we have a date with Akatsuki, and so much other stuff going on. I know it's a lot for you, but you make it easy to want so much more, I can't help but be impatient. Thanks for everything Cosy

Ozrotica

Honestly for 4k I think the main issue is going to be the fact that the models arent high poly enough to make it worth it. Even at its current resolution you can see the straight edges on the curves etc. Honestly I’d go more content as not only is it the thing we all want the most, it also boosts your earnings etc. if you feel compelled to increase fidelity I look into seeing if you increase poly count of the LIs over resolution. It will make even the current resolution versions look better

Thanks for the dev log Cosy, the new UI here looks great. A 4k version for those that want it could be cool, but oof having to clear 100GB+ would be rough for those without expandable storage. If a 4k version does become a thing, i feel like it should just be an optional version alongside the normal sized version, probably when Cosy Cafe is actually complete. I myself would stick to the regular sized version due to not being all that bothered about 4k for visual novels, hell i play visual novels on my Switch at 720p lol. I would rather have those two weeks spent on game content. As always, i can’t wait for 0.13

Owen ☘️

Agreed. More content would be a better use of time. I bet the vast majority wouldn’t bother downloading a 4k version when they see the file size

Fritz

100GB ? CC compete with GTA now 😆

Cosy Creator

Don't worry, it would always be optional - I'm not gonna make everyone download 100GB!

Gurney

Hey, thank You for the news, for me PC 4k version is must-have in case it will be aviable. And nice UI changes.

TheMrDrProf

4K sounds good in theory, and I’m sure would look nice. But given the massive file-size and time it would take, I would personally rather the work be put towards the next update. I need my fix of the girls 🙂 thanks for the hard work CC! Would be cool to just have a downloadable pack of the 4k renders, or a hand selection of them, at some point, even if not fully finished out in photoshop.

Fake Display Name

Extremely important point. User/player feedback isn't always helpful. Questions like "do you want good number to be bigger" will always get a yes from large groups. Even if it's not that much extra work, what if something changes in 6 months that makes it a huge pain? Now, you're in hell and stuck with this commitment you agreed to because... why not? It's not worth the risk.

Sett

Thank you for the Update 😊 and i think for me personally a 4k Version is a little bit too much, i really Love the Game and what you do, but i think it Takes too much of Ur time and i personally would rather put the Work towards the next Update, the big File size is a little bit worrying as well

Ozrotica

Yeah this is a good point, more work every release just makes more busy work for you, delays release so you get more “it takes too long between updates” comments etc. No one is reading an AVN on a 60” screen from 3 ft in front of it. Granted there are people who would notice the difference but most people won’t. Most people just want bigger number… then will complain cause it took too long to download. When you’ve done all 4 chapters of the story it’ll be like downloading COD just. It’s fine now but honestly the more I think about it the worse of an idea it seems, keep them and when you’re done with the chapter or something fo a 4k release once to make those people happy but I’d keep it to end of chapter etc

Garret

I would be all for a 4k version of the game, even if I dont have the monitors yet for that I do plan to upgrade them and it would be sweet to break them in with a 4k run of this game. Also a huge fan of the new UI changes, the day selection to start from is cool looking.

Lord Tony Ha

I don't mind either version as I have the space on several ssd's for all the games I play, I also have 1TB plus on my cell phone, so what ever you go with I'm happy either way. Many thanks as always for the outstanding work that you produce for us along with these updates.

Chris Blaylock

I would. In a heartbeat. 4k, ridiculously large files? sure. Bring it on

Chris Blaylock

Damn, saw this update, and now I will have to restart it again. Read thru #17.....

Garagara

Thanks for the update Cosy! Everything you've listed sounds absolutely great, as always! As for the 4K aspect, I understand the appeal, but also understand that 4K itself doesn't magically make everything look better. The only case where I can see an argument for it would be if the models and environments lost details with the render down. It might actually matter sometimes? But like a few others stated, hard edges on models make this prospect not that fruitful I think. Not a complaint by the way, if you had to manually smooth the edges to a point that it appears smooth on current rendition, much less 4K, then we'd be at least tripling the release date everytime... That stuff is *ridiculously* time consuming, not to mention boring, and the difference doesn't really make it worth it for you I don't think. Not that I could download it to begin with, I don't have that much space left 😅 If you want to do it anyway (talking about 4K, not smoothing more lol), then don't let it take more work than expected at the very least ^^ Well, I'll go with whatever you decide either way! Thanks again Cosy, and see you in the next one!

Ben Harris

I have started re-reading it. Will probably read again before the new release just because I love the story. I am really excited for the new update and cant wait. Thank you so much for making a beautiful and relaxing story.

Vrati

The 4k version is not that important to me since the current version already looks great. The huge file size would also be a problem too.

Ellis Alden

No interest in a 4k version.Your time is far too important to waste on frivolities.

AEarthbound

I would much rather see the game completed before worrying about a 4K remaster.

Avaricious

Thanks for the update CC! I think that it would be a better use of time to finish the current update and then do the 4k after as I imagine that the amount of people wanting the 4k version is much lower. Can't wait for the update! Have a good week bruv!!

Christian V

A 4k version is a cool idea, but not something I'd have any practical interest in. I barely have enough space on my computer for the handful of games I play as it is, and another 100+ gb is totally out of the question until and unless I get a serious memory upgrade. Even then, that's a minimum of three days to download for me, which is a major PITA.

xCrowned

Great to hear that development is going well, and there will be improvements in the animation. While a 4k version would be cool, I would rather have the new content faster tbh. Maybe once the game is finished? Looking forward to the next version. The last update was a banger, and I know the next will be no different.

Jacky

4k version also NOT highly important for me. I have 1440p monitor (not 2160p as needed for 4k) but the main problem as scale up from 1080p to 2160p not linear but exponentially more issues (not just more disk space, but also top tier GPU needed, Internet bandwidth 1Gbps getting too slow also), meanwhile just like double size. I think you waste you time with those 4k content. Just think about this 100GB size, you can see higher resolution but really all of the users have those space for that? Just compare those numbers: FS2020 with lot of mods 313GB Kerbal Space Program 2 165GB StarCitizen just LIVE folder 124GB Red Dead Redemption 2 119GB --->Cosy Cafe 4k expected here World of Warships 99GB Star Wars Battlefront II 90GB Forza Horizon 4 82GB Hogwarts Legacy 88GB Star Wars Outlaws 71GB UBOAT 66GB Cyberpunk 2077 63GB Cities Skylines II 62GB The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt GOTY 61GB I think better to spend more of you time to add more content (story, new ideas etc.) instead of 4k graphics for those animate characters. Should we really need to see tits in 4k?

Steve Craley

4K version is superfluous, IMO. Everything already looks great, and the huge file size would be a bit much. It might be cool to offer n the side after the game is complete though.

StefanHill

The actual number of players with a 4k equipment is tiny. Less than 5% if you look at steam data. Unless somebody pays a lot of money, do not waste your time. The number might seem higher here or in discord, because those people are more active. Everything else you did I do not need personally, but it shows how dedicated you are to the game. Cudos.

Pouf

I would like a 4k version (UHD more precisely). I can see the file size being an issue and would be willing to pay extra for it (especially if available outside of Mega). But I agree with others that new content is more important.

ILoveSucuk

Hello there. As a 4K Desktop Monitor User, I would not mind the extra waiting Time to have CC in glorious 4K. That being said, most of the (A)VN's I am reading are in 1080P = Full HD. Photo-Realistic as well as HS(2), Koikatsu etc. And I am totally fine with. And as a lof of people know: Unless the Graphics are Photo-Realistic (which CC is obviously not), it heavily depends on the Artistic Quality of the created Images / Scenes, the initial Render Settings and Resolution set up by the Developer, Compression Algorithm used to on the final Renders etc., if the difference between 1080P and 1440P and even 4K will be visible to the Customer of the Product. As well as how good the Customers Eyes are. Even People with 20/20 Eyesight are more often than not unable to see a Difference, unless it is "moving" = Animation, Video etc. // Well, have a nice Day and keep up the fantastic work! #StaySafeStayHealthyEveryone

Dracconius

I am would rather have the content then a 4k version honestly. I love this game but that would be to much space to use.

Lord Tony Ha

Hey CC skip the 4K version and stay with it as is! I would rather see an extra day added to what you make so far as that would be time better spent, I'm sure everyone on here would agree with me.

RonO

I would personally prioritize more content than 4k, the game looks good as it is. On a Side note, keep up the amazing work CC! amazing story + sexy times in this game is awesome.

Pax

I appreciate the offer for a 4K rev of Cosy Cafe. The time to do clean up - photoshop, etc. coupled with the large file size, pouts me in the group that would prefer to see your time spent on new content. Thanks for both the update and the ask about a 4k rev!

subject6661

While i do have 4k hardware, and i love CCs story and vibe, i dont think its worth it to download and put 100+gb on my drives for it. It would just simply take up too much storage. 1080 is still visually pleasing and is perfectly capable of putting the visuals to their right

Kay Jameson

4K sounds awesome but at 100gb I think it’d definitely be diminishing returns. TBH I’d still download it to see the difference and have a replay excuse. Speaking of, excited and chomping at the bit for this next update

KaoruCG

I do have a 4k monitor, but IMO, 100GB is a bit out there, while I have the space, I think it better to continue with current res. as there seems to be a LOT of Android/iphone players. I would like to see the overall brightness to increase some, and again, IMO.

KaoruCG

Thanks for all the fun!
