I think this was the episode where I started to realize how smart the writers are. :)

A really interesting science fact that most people don't know is that the vacuum of space won't kill you immediately, if you do the right things. You have to breathe out. You can see Uncle Matteo do that before and as he opened his helmet. If you hold air in your lungs they will invert, which sounds like a spectacularly awful way to die. You'll be ok if you breathe out though, for as long as there is oxygen remaining in your blood. That's not long, less than a minute, but it's not immediate either. You won't freeze because there's nowhere for the heat to go. Hard vacuum means there's nothing there, there's no cold air to pull the heat from your body. Anything out of direct sunlight will freeze eventually from radiation, but that's a very slow way to lose heat. It's not pleasant, you'll burst capillaries and could have minor radiation burns from the sun and swelling in your joints from the bursts. Matteo opening his helmet is definitely an exaggeration to show how comfortable belters are in vacuum, but so long as you could get your helmet to seal again you could open your helmet, pull out a wire, and close your helmet again and be perfectly fine.

Being based on a series of novels, yeah, it is a slower-burn, longer-form story than most shows. It really feels paced like the novels, even if they did make concessions to the change in medium and try and punch things up a bit earlier to hook the audience in. But like a lot of novels, there's a sense of momentum, of things picking up speed until the tipping point is reached and everything starts happening all at once. Also, the novels started life as an idea for a role-playing game from the two authors, and you can see that especially in this episode. The main characters form a rather archetypal sci-fi RPG party. Holden is "The Face," the charismatic nominal leader. He doesn't demand the others submit to his authority and take away their agency (much), but he can knit this group into a whole, as well as negotiate on their behalf with others. Amos is the muscle, officially on the Cant as a mechanic, but really, he's the guy with the facility for violence, able to handle problems with a gun, his fists, or whatever falls readily to hand. They get this kickass ship to serve as the team transport (Mars has the most advanced fleet, remember, to a Martian gunship would be the gold standard in small-scale starships that can take care of themselves). The ship needs a pilot, so we have Alex, and a mechanic, so we have Naomi. And they all come from different backgrounds: Holden and Amos are Earthers, but from very different places on Earth; Alex is Martian, Naomi is a Belter. Amusingly, Miller could be seen as that prima donna player overly invested in his Blade Runner-lite neo-noir detective story and taking a roundabout and leisurely path to linking up with the rest of the party. And Shed could be that player who showed up for the first few sessions, then decided they had better things to do and just dropped out.
