Firefly 1x08 Full Length Reaction

Love your excitement on all the cool techniques, transitions and backstories in this episode! This show also is great for rewatches in that it points back to things in prior episodes. In the Pilot episode when they land in Persephone, Kaylee tells Mal that they need to replace the compression coil, but Mal implies they couldn’t afford it. And then they wait 7 more episodes for it to bite them in the ass.

Another reason to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You can see Joss Whedon honing his technique over time on Buffy and bringing that knowledge to Firefly

IMHO, the storytelling of the falter of 'Serenity' here is somehow more than the great 'trippy transition porn' we all appreciate... rather, I claim it's '3 time-line poetry'... and for me... comes together to be the best episode of the 14 Firefly episodes that got made (second only to the movie; Serenity!)

Learning the story of the crew and Serenity is a favorite part of this episode. Meeting "sweet" Kaley for the first time is always a laugh. Then diving into her empathy with Serenity is touching.

You’re right about Jayne. Definitely more to unpack about him than was covered in the one season. Rewatch the pilot episode. When Kaylee is shot and the doctor is working on her in the Med bay, Jayne is outside watching through the window. Looking kind of like a concerned older brother. Not to spoil anything. You have to pay attention to Jayne. There’s some exposition coming up that I notice most people miss! I’ll post more later, when you get to the episode.

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes, can’t really add on too much to what you said (other than what you haven’t said yet), and what others are saying in the comments. All said, your excitement about the editing/transitions here makes me *so* excited to hear and see you geek out for a certain episode of an upcoming show (trying to be vague to not give stuff away, or imply things that won’t happen)…but you might actually pass out from the technical brilliance of it. But…we’re like 3-ish months away from that… *sigh* We’ll see you next week!

Chris LaLonde

We need to find out who cast the deciding vote to cancel the show and send him this episode and make him watch it from now until his end of days so he can contemplate his extremely poor judgement and decision making skills!!!

Can others hear the audio of the show - I am only hearing Jacqui's reaction but not the audio of the episode

One thing that the overexposed lighting with the flashbacks makes me think of is that it seems to convey a tone of almost happier times as Mal is thinking back with love and nostalgia to these memories as he is literally dying.

There's a heartwarming behind-the-scenes story about this episode, heard on the DVD commentary . You know the big red button Wash rigged up so Mal could call everyone back? Well, Alan Tudyk took that big red button as a keepsake. Later, after the show was abruptly canceled, the cast knew that Joss Whedon would be searching for a way to bring the show back. So Alan sent him the button with a note that said, "When your miracle gets here, just hit this button."

The 3 timelines of past, present , and near future each have signature lighting, and the past is a ultra bright desert planet so the oversaturation in the cockpit also included an element of realism as well as connective visual story telling.

This is my favourite episode

Notice Mal didn't say anything mean about her job until she said she supported the alliance.

Just joined a couple of weeks ago so a bit late to the party. I love how much you are loving the master class aspect of some of these episodes. My least favorite and the one I connect to the most, from a story pov, are still a head of you at this point. On one hand Jayne is one of my favorite characters just because he is so simple on the other not so much because he is not trust worthy. I do wish we could have seen the episode where he turns on Mal. (Ariel does not count). I am very much looking forward to more insight from you on why I love this show. Thank You

JLee

My favorite episode of television.
