Firefly meets Oceans 11 😄 I love the way they play with style and genre! Also, poor River!

That last line gets me every time! "Is it time to go to sleep again?" "No Mei-Mei. It's time to wake up." Jayne not wanting the others to know he betrayed them is such great growth. Really hate we got so little character growth because of the cancellation. People talk about this show as if it would have been the greatest of all time. That's hard to predict. But it had so much potential and was getting better and better off of a really great start. Still such a shame.

I have never really noticed any other show genre jump like this one does even though there are plenty of other shows that use different directors for each episode. I wonder if it was a conscious choice to kind of make the genre jumping stand out in this series.

Small bit of trivia. When they got back to Serenity, they were all standing around and Mal wrapped Kaylee in that hug from behind. Totally unscripted! Jewel kept missing her mark and Nathan just improvised the hug to keep her from blocking anyone.

I'm late to the party, but wanted to comment anyway. I'm pretty sure Jayne not wanting the others to know that he betrayed them is what saved his life. There was no mercy in Mal's face, even when he turned away and Jayne couldn't see his expression any more. He was walking away and going to let Jayne die a traitor's death. Jayne not wanting the others to know meant that he was ashamed, it meant that there was something in him that could be redeemed.

River vs Jayne's shirt (Why River attacked Jayne with a knife) ===================================================== There was a hidden reason River slashed Jayne. With the premature cancellation, major storylines could not be explored. The "Big Bad" in the Firefly 'Verse is the Blue Sun Corporation. Blue Sun is a mega-conglomerate that makes basically everything and has become more powerful than even the Alliance government (note how the "Hands of Blue" guys were unconcerned with killing government agents). You see their logos here and there around the show, usually in the background. For example, the "Cry Baby" coffee can in the original episode was labeled "Blue Sun". The show implies (e.g. "two by two, hands of blue") that the Blue Sun Corporation was behind River's torture at the Academy. So why did River slash Jayne? Look at the shirt he was wearing...it was a T-Shirt with the Blue Sun logo. Remember when River in "Shindig" episode was tearing off can food labels? The idea is that those were also labeled "Blue Sun". River was looking to get rid of the Blue Sun logo, it just happened to be on a shirt Jayne was wearing.

I didn't realize I was behind an episode until you posted ep10 today, so just watched this now! I think you walked in with a misconception that I want to correct - your comments in the post-ep discussion seem to indicate that you're thinking the 14 eps here are a "full" season, but remember that Firefly came out in a day and age when network television was ~22 eps/season, and Firefly got canceled with only 11 episodes aired!

2026-09-16 05:00 watching your reactions has been fun. I want to say something, which is the zooming style that you've noticed a lot was new for a sci-fi show. it had been started a while earlier by shows like ER, which started to use hand cams to give an immersive feeling rather than a stage feeling. It really hadn't become "camp" until the office and similar shows did the "fake documentary" on TV (of course there was waiting for guffman, best in show, spinal tap much earlier but I'm talking for tv) The feeling of the shots- In including the shakey zooms for the space shots, was meant to create contrast with the styles of sci-fi shows like Star Trek, star wars movies, 2001 space odyssey. it's mean to be gritty, immersive, etc. though now 20 years lear it feels like a moment in time.

While I enjoy almost every episode in this series, 8-10 are my favorites. The show really hit its stride here. Which makes the cancellation that much more baffling.
