Comments

Freja Corbinne

Book 1 concludes with the events of S2E5.

Phil Stubblefield

Holy forking fungus, it's good to have a new Expanse reaction! 😲 But it's even better to know that things are continuing to recover for you! Welcome back, Jacqui! 😁

Darj

So where WAS the book ending? Cause there's a LOT of cliffhangers.

Bryan Mau

I think we need to come up with a food recipe for Holy Forking Fungus!

Movie Night

I had plans for a T-shirt, but hadn't considered a recipe 😂 My brother loves to cook, so maybe he can come up with something!

Movie Night

Thank you! It's great to be back, and starting back with this episode hyped me up even more than I already was 😃

Movie Night

Thank you for clarifying! That makes sense 👍🏻

Eric

Book one ended with this episode.

Eric

This episode was definitely "that" episode for me. I have to admit, the first time I watched The Expanse I kind of watched it without fully paying attention, sometimes multitasking when the show was on. Then this episode hit, and it grabbed me so hard, that I immediately went back and started from the beginning again, focused entirely on the show.

Darj

How can we be sure, though? There are so many possibilities! :P

DirtySteve

I'm so happy you're back!!! Thank you for this awesome holiday gift. 🎁 It's just what I wanted!🤩

Movie Night

I had never even though to change the settings. Didn't realize I could do that lol. Thank you!

Movie Night

Understandable!!! As much as I've been enjoying it from the start, this episode was a whole new level, and I'm even more excited for more!

Bryan Mau

I have a recipe idea for this ... missing a possibly needed ingredient for my idea ... will work on it after Christmas.

Phil Stubblefield

Chalk it up to the differences in our education: you studied film, and I studied computer science... 😉

Nic J

You better get a 2nd bingo card because you've seen nothing yet.

Spot on with the Independence Day and Firefly references!

Rocketry equations are notorious for their unforgiving nature. It takes X energy to move Y mass, and X increases a lot faster than Y, so it's easy to reach a point of diminishing returns. Adding more fuel won't buy you more range or speed, because that fuel is also mass that needs to be moved. Eros may be small compared to actual planets, but it's a pretty sizable asteroid, moving it requires insane amounts of energy. That's why they needed the Nauvoo to knock it into the sun, it was the set of engines big enough to impart enough kinetic energy (think of it like a gigantic game of pool; Eros is the ball, the sun is the pocket you want it to go into, the Nauvoo is the pool cue; figure out how how hard and at what angle you want to hit Eros with the Nauvoo, and physics will take care of the rest). But the protomolecule decided to just make Eros move, and while whatever engine it constructed that's allowing this movement is putting out waste heat, it's nowhere near enough waste heat for the kind of energy required to move a rock the size of Eros. And this is a REACTIONLESS drive, a thing that isn't even theoretically possible, though very popular in science fiction. All propulsion we know of works on Newtonian physics, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Push your foot down and back on the floor, you move up and forward; walking. The tires on your car spin one way, in contact with the ground, your car moves the other way. Propellers for planes and boats, and jet engines, both basically move air or water through/around them in one direction to move the plane or boat in the other. A rocket sprays hot burning fuel out the back to push it forward. Eros isn't spewing anything out, but it's still moving. All of this is impossible, which makes everyone watching incredibly nervous. And yes, this episode marks the end of Book 1 of The Expanse, "Leviathan Wakes." The title takes on a few different meanings. The leviathan of the protomolecule, unleashed on the Sol system to change everything forever. The leviathan of war, tensions between Earth, Mars, and the Belt hitting a point where something was going to spark an armed conflict, and it just happened to be the mystery around the protomolecule. The leviathan of the OPA, finally hitting the tipping point where they can transform form a protest/revolutionary/terrorist movement into a legitimate player at the table of international politics. As with everything else about this series and the novels it's based on, there's plenty of clever symbolism and deeper meaning to go looking into.
