***NOTE - I did watch the post credits footage, it was just really difficult to include in the full length. I'll try uploading it separately, but it will be included in the YouTube cut.

**I've also been told there is a lot of background noise with the new mic, so I'm working on that right now to see what I can do, otherwise I'll go back to the old one for the moment.

We'll be back to our regular scheduled content next week. I've just had to rush some things because of Arcane, so I moved filming up a bit. Getting it all worked out, though!

K-Pop Demon Hunters Full Length Reaction

Ah yay, I know what I'm doing after work today! I've been excited to see this!

FYI the tigers name is Derpy and the magpie is Sussie. They are traditional motifs in Korean culture. The demons have traditional Korean demon faces and the patterns are similar to the ones tattooed on demons.

This will go down as Sony Pictures biggest mistake. The corporate heads didn’t think this movie was going to make money so they sold the rights to Netflix for $20 million. Sony Music sold the music rights to Republic Records who is now raking in all the money from the soundtrack. K-Pop Demon Hunters has 7 of the top 10 spots on Spotify’s top 10 playlist and Golden reached #1 on Billboard’s list.

Hindsight is 20/20. But I’m not sure this was a mistake. If it had gone to theaters it may have flopped and been pulled like a month in. I’m not saying it would have but I think without going to Netflix first it would not have blown up like it did.

Movie Night

Sam and I were talking about this the other day. When I told him I watched it and loved it, he literally said "heads must be rolling at Sony" 😅 In all seriousness though, I haven't been able to get "Golden" out of my head since I watched this 😂 I wake up with that song playing on a loop in my brain!

Movie Night

I'm glad you're excited! This was exactly the sort of light, fun, and CATCHY thing that I needed right now lol

Derpy (the tiger) wasn't going to betray by stealing the lyrics, it saw the wastebasket fallen over and wanted to fix it (like the flower pot in its first introduction) I love how the messaging has so many layers. Obviously it's Rumi accepting her whole self, but then Zoe and Mira also doing so. In addition at the end the whole group no longer avoiding interactions with fans on the street, instead choosing to intentionally engage with them.

I can almost understand the decision by Sony Pictures to not release the movie themselves and sell it to Netflix for a safe profit(also remember that some of these deals were made during and just after the pandemic). But the decision by Sony Music(a different division of Sony) to sell the soundtrack to Republic for peanuts is indefensible. It shows how hidebound the execs are over there, and heads do need to roll if they want to stay as one of the big three. What else has slipped/is slipping through their fingers?

Michael Kemmet

I don't know if it's fixable, but I'm hearing a lot of background static/noise in this video. It's been there in other videos, but it seems to be louder than usual in this one. Unless it's just me. Still love the content of the reaction, of course. ;)

I used to glance at the TV when my Mom would watch Korean tv shows through satellite. I would hear a song that I know was a U.S. hit or favorite and cringe at them covering it. I've gone through a number of anime shows with other reactors and thought, I'd give this a shot. I WAS HOOKED!! Re-watched this with another reactor and watched every YT edit out there and still couldn't get enough! You made a usual Friday so much better with this watching. If I had more heads up I would have grabbed my friends and their kids to go watch/sing along in the theaters! For the next movie we're going to need a month long release in the theaters for sing alongs alone. Finally.... After the second or third time watching I decided that Derpy the tiger will be my next tattoo!! It's pretty much written in stone.

That's Fan/AC noise. can be fixed with a 100-250hz filter

I use Final Cut Pro for my video editing, and it’s noise removal tool is a simple single click, works great.

One of my favorite things about this movie is behind the scenes. The voice actor for Rumi who did the singing is Kim Eun-jae, who goes by EJAE. I’m no expert in the system, but for KPop Idols, they have a “Trainee” system that labels put potential young singers through before putting the best into groups. EJAE stayed in the trainee system for 10 years, never getting approval to debut either on her own or as a solo act. She left the system, and went to college for the arts, and pivoted into doing songwriting and later producing music, really breaking out during the COVID period, and has written for a few big bands (including TWICE, featured in the credits of this movie). EJAE was asked to help write songs and do vocal productionfor this movie back in 2020, and is credited as a writer on “How It’s Done”, “Golden”, and “Your Idol”. She wrote the songs partially inspired by her own experience as a trainee, having to change and hide so much trying to be an Idol. She also ended up recording demos for many of the songs as the movie was being shopped around for approval. Apparently, her work in the demos didn’t just help sell the film to Sony, but her voice work was so strong that when the directors came to the casting stage, they came back to her and asked her to star as Rumi’s singing voice. She has absolutely blown up now, with so many vocal coaches and reactors lauding her performance of these songs…but also as you’ve caught onto, the sharp wit in the writing that made these not just pop songs but also story-telling songs for a musical. I don’t like to get into celebrities’ lives…but I am so, so, so interested to see what she chooses to do now (beyond sequels, naturally). I’m sure so many roads have opened to her now, and after her journey, I’m really rooting for her!

Animation wise, the members of HuntreX are animated on twos and the Saja Boys/demons are animated on ones. Meaning that they have a pose every 2 frames instead on every frames, giving the stop motion look of animation. Like in “Into the Spiderverse”, has Miles is animated on twos until he owns his powers and start being animated on ones. You can see the switch on Rumi during the duet and then on the other members on the final song.

First time viewing...Loved it! It's interesting to see a film with Tarantino level of awareness yet focusing on our lightness....

You know what I've found particularly impressive? It is that K-pop is not just a gimmick in this movie. I think this is why the movie is so popular. K-pop fans would have been far from enough.

James Smith

This movie just has so many psychologically relevant themes, and it's so well-written and voiced... I've seen this movie probably a dozen times since August, and every time I see it, I find something new to point out.

Yay! Like many others, I have been obsessed with this movie since seeing it, been hopping around YouTube reactions, and thinking "Surely Jacqui will do this one." So I've been watching and waiting. . . waiting. . . finally, came here to see what was up (so sorry to hear about your illness, sincerely hope you feel better soon!) And see there's a full-length ready to go! So excited to watch this! I was sold on this movie almost right away, with the flashback to the original hunters. I grew up watching reruns of MASH, and the show holds a special place in my heart. A season 5 episode, "Exorcism," has a spate of bad luck befall the 4077, culminating in a elderly Korean man running in front of a truck because he thought he was possessed by demons, and was trying to scare them into leaving him alone. He refuses to be operated on unless the evil spirits are cleansed, so his granddaughter brings in a traditional Korean shamaness, a mudang, who dances and chants through the camp, and suddenly everything starts working again. And that mudang was dressed very much like those original hunters, with colorful robes and beads and distinctive hat. So the metaphysical logic of the film made immediate sense to me; of course you can drive of evil with song and dance, and down through the generations, that could certainly evolve into KPop Demon Hunters. 1:06:54: I love the visual storytelling leading up to this. We see Bobby being hauled away, presumably by demons in disguise. Mira and Zoey chase after them, then Bobby and his abductors turn into demons, then teleport away. Immediately cut to the real Bobby, telling us that, no, Bobby hasn't been secretly a demon this whole time, and also telling us that demons can shapeshift/glamour themselves to look like specific people. So that when Zoey and Mira show up on stage next to Rumi, despite us last seeing them nowhere near her, we can pretty quickly figure out that these are demons masquerading as Mira and Zoey. I just love how rapidly and smartly the movie hands out these critical details to inform the audience what's going on. 1:24:52: "Aw, they went from black to white." Not just that. It's hard to see, but Mira and Zoey's white outfits have iridescent patterns on them, like the ones on Rumi's skin. Symbolic both of accepting Rumi as she is, but also accepting their own "faults and fears," just like Rumi has. They're not perfect, but they don't need to be. They're together, and that's what's important. EDIT: And you saw it! Awesome!
