I'm a day off my posting schedule due to some technical difficulties getting back up to speed. But here we are!

And...

AMAZON GAVE THEM MONEY!!!! My goodness, the budget is glorious, and they even changed the series logo (which doesn't surprise me, since Amazon was essentially rebranding). But damn, it kinda seems like they're rubbing their production value in SyFy's face 😂

The Expanse 4x01 Full Length Reaction

Amazon gave them MONEY!!! (And changed the logo--not surprising, since they're essentially rebranding).

Thanks Jacqui for getting us going again. Please make sure you stay healthy and be your edgy self

Thank you! The fact that I made it through this whole reaction with only one cough was a miracle 😂 But I do feel so much better, and I'm no longer concerned that I'm going to relapse, so that's a huge relief. Back to business, as they say!

Welcome back. It's good to see you well again.

Necrophysilis

Don't mind pausing especially when getting insight from your thoughts. More reaction from the Reaction. Especially when it is well telegraphed.

Welcome back. I've been looking forward to watching "The Expanse" again with you. I'm glad you are impressed with the start of season 4. I cannot wait to see what you think of the final seasons. I tend to think Avasarala is less filtered now that she's the boss. She doesn't have to maneuver or work behind the scenes like before.

Scott Clarke

Just watched the reaction. You are correct in noting how efficiently the writers and director informed the viewers on what has occurred between seasons. We better understand Naomi’s pain and struggle dealing with functioning on a planet with a couple lines of dialogue at the start of episode. This is third time I watched the episode and finally focused on the shot setup and camera angles due to your discussion of them. Much appreciated. The pause mid reaction stream was needed due to the sheer amount of visual and plot information we experienced.

Glad you’re Feeling better, bronchitis can be brutal

In the books, Chrisjen swore quite a bit from the very beginning, but this was toned down when the show was on SciFy (very much so in the first season and relaxed a bit in the second and third). Amazon let them be a lot less censored. My recollection is that Ty Franck has stated that the budget did not go up as much as it appears. Instead he credits continuity of the production team over the seasons that allowed them to use the gained experience to make better use of the budget. Glad you are feeling better.

One thing that I think you in particular will appreciate, that I didn't hear you mention specifically: notice the aspect ratio on Ilus vs. the aspect ratio anywhere else.

Rupert Purcat

Chrisjen is now the President (Secretary) of UN. and is comfortable in the role, so she does things Her way.

Awesome to have you back with The Expanse, Miller asked Holden what rain tasted like before he 'died'. Holden said it tastes like nothing. So, Miller asking the same question again in this episode shows us there are bits of the real Miller in there.

Rings of Power hate is always a valid crash out

«Was it made by Boeing?!?» Loved that one 😄

I noticed it when I was editing the full length version, so I did a little pop up note on screen. Such a great detail! Thank you for making sure I saw it 😄

Movie Night

I completely forgot about that! Thank you for reminding me! Excellent detail in the writing 😱

Movie Night

Thank you! I've had it before, but needing twice as long to get better is definitely a sign I'm getting older 😅

Movie Night

Thank you! I'm glad you guys aren't upset about the pause, because I wasn't exaggerating that I felt like my brain was melting 😅

Movie Night

Thank you! It's good to be back, and this was a hell of a place to jump back in. And I agree--it definitely makes sense that now Avasarala's in a more significant position of power, she has the luxury of being unfiltered. Plus, it's just fun to watch 😄

Movie Night

I'm glad! I probably still won't do it much in the future, but it's nice to know you guys don't mind, if it's necessary 😄

Movie Night

Makes sense for Avasarala. And as far as the budget, it's such a testament to this crew, that even though they didn't have that much of an increase, it sure looks like it. Absolutely incredible!

David Webb

Glad you are back! Looking forward to watching this season with you!

Forodrim

glad to see your back. Season 4 is a different focus due to the protomolecule has been solved, i think most see this as the weakest season.

Mauler

I missed these. Nice work, as always. I'm happy to see you feeling better! 🙂

James Smith

Glad to see you get back to The Expanse! Hope you're taking care of yourself, and I look forward to how you react to the rest of the season! This season's soundtrack is one I like to have on in the background when playing sci-fi RPGs, but it definitely does have a Game of Thrones kind of vibe.

Ivo Costa

No budget increase. They just got better at doing what they do. Plus, Amazon provided Alcon free access to their render farms, which yes, could be considered as a budget increase.

"Peaches" because of the alias "Melba." Peach Melba, a French dessert of poached peaches, vanilla ice cream, and raspberry sauce. In his review of the novel this series is based on, SF Debris talks about two different ways of looking at this situation. One: Beleaguered refugees from the destruction on Ganymede, denied any safe port anywhere in the Sol system, fed up with being treated like human trash, decide to make a desperate mad dash through the Ring, risking their lives first in the transit, then in trying to adapt to living down a gravity well, all in the slim hope they might find some place they can finally call their own. And then, some Earth corporation, exactly like the ones that have been exploiting Belters for generations, controlling them by controlling access to air, water, and food, show up and say "Sorry, this planet belongs to us." And Belter refugees from Ganymede KNOW that, at best, they'll be exploited yet again, at worst, have the home they've worked and suffered and sacrificed for taken away from them, because the Inners EXIST to take shit away from Belters. Two: The RCE Corporation went to all the work of plotting out a slow, stable exploration of the planets beyond the Ring Gates, went through all the interminable UN paperwork to get permission to start a careful study of these new worlds humanity unexpectedly has access to, so they can set about the painstaking work of cataloguing all potential resources and dangers these worlds might present. With the end goal of starting a measured colonization effort, properly planned and supplied so that each colony can become self-sufficient and start a robust intergalactic trade through the Gates. Now, with all the Is carefully dotted and all the Ts meticulously crossed, finally, at long last, this great undertaking is ready to begin. . . and the squatters got there first, mucking around with a planet and ecosystem they can't understand, making who knows what kind of alterations to the planet's biome already, and telling the scientific staff who've been anticipating this greatest exploration in human history to fuck off. We're naturally inclined to side with the Belters in all this, but. . . well, if the Ganymede refugees had meticulously applied for, and after a great deal of effort, secured the rights to settle here, and found a corporation had blitzed through the Gate and beat them there so they could start poking things with scientific sticks, would we side with the company just because they got there first?
