Vittelius

Princess Andromeda was a Ethiopian princess and the wife of Perseus, the very hero Percy is named after. As explained by Sally Jackson in season 1, child-Perseus and his mother are locked into a crate and thrown into the sea. But eventually they are rescued and the mother remarries. Once Perseus is grown he is sent on a quest by his step-dad to kill Medusa. So Perseus embarks, he meets the grey sisters, who tell him the way and what he needs to fulfil his quest. The next chapter you already know: he goes and chops off Medusas head. On his way home, he encounters Andromeda. she has been chained to the cliffs of Ethiopia by her parents. The country has been plagued by a sea monster for years and the royal couple hopes to solve the problem by sacrificing their own daughter to the creature. Yes modern Ethiopia doesn't have a coast line, but to the Greeks the term described more of a general region in east Africa. Perseus uses the head of Medusa to petrify the monster and frees the young women. He then takes her as his wife and they had a long and by all accounts loving marriage (which is a rarity in Greek mythology). And to this day their love lives on, because the gods granted the couple eternal life among the stars, which is why there’s both an Andromeda and in close proximity a Perseus constellation. Luke, I think, picked the name because she's a figure sacrificed to save her parents, just like he believes the gods are sacrificing their children without a care in the world. That or it's just a fun reference. The Percy Jackson books are at the end of the day also the tiniest bit "Ready Player One" for mythology nerds.

I really really love the extra stuff they've added showing Calrisse's side of the story and getting the interactions with Ares and her ship's crew. They've done a great job translating the descriptions, humor and dialogue to the screen while adding to the original story. As Vittelius else pointed Andromeda was an Ethiopian princess in mythology who was rescued by Greek Hero Perseus. Their story is portrayed in the Clash of the Titans movies.

Definitely glad you have heard the prophecy now. One of the big complaints people had with the movie was making all the characters much older. A major point in the story is the building of tension as Percy gets closer and closer to hitting 16.

OMG! This is going to sound so random, but I remember the story now, because Mary told it in Downton Abbey, when she felt like she was being sacrificed, to be married off to save her family after the line of succession changed. She basically called Matthew a sea monster. I'd forgotten she said Andromeda. That's a good point about why Luke might've named the ship after her!

I like seeing Clarisse's part of the story too. Clarisse is a fun character and I like that you kinda root for her even though she's not the most likable character. The actress does a great job of showing the cracks in her armor, and even though she is a tough girl, she also has a lot of insecurity and vulnerability on the inside.
