When you mentioned what your aunt said about you and Meg Ryan, I covered part of the screen to check, and I have to say I agree with her. I think it’s the eyes.

For the question of whether a (straight) man and woman can have a platonic friendship, I confess to being very conflicted. From my own experience, I actually do have several of those friendships. However, they are without exception ones with decent age gaps. I’ve never had a platonic friendship with a woman close in age where romantic thoughts didn’t at least somewhat occur to me. I’m not at all saying it’s impossible. But I do think they tend to be rare exceptions.

This movie is so iconic and such a time capsule of the thought of the times it was made. It is dated, but that's not bad. I enjoyed it.

Great reaction, thank you! I believe what made this movie stand out at the time was just about all of the other romantic comedies of the era were just different ways of how to end up married. WHMS took Harry's premise about men and women unable to be friends and spending most of the movie disproving it (I for one can confirm I have and have had multiple close platonic friendships with other genders, of various relationship statuses and age gaps). As I understand it Harry and Sally were originally NOT supposed to end up together, but Rob and Michele's developing relationship showed Rob that it would be fine to end up together. Not sure if you knew based on your reaction, but the lady who said "I'll have what she's having" is Rob's mother IRL. And Harry's girlfriend during the Pictionary party is Rob's daughter (Tracy Reiner, actually Penny Marshall's daughter whom Rob adopted when Rob and Penny were married).

I think it may be true that men always want to sleep with women they find attractive, but I disagree that that means they can't be friends. I love Meg Ryan so much! BTW, if you'd like another rom/com with her (with Tom Hanks, no less), I highly recommend Joe Versus the Volcano (assuming you haven't seen it).
