Finally watching Raiders! Don't ask me why, but I genuinely only remember watching "The Last Crusade" growing up, and this felt like a tragic gap in my film knowledge! Thoroughly enjoyed getting to see where the franchise started, and the music will be stuck in my head for weeks! (Not that I'm complaining 😄).

Finally watching Raiders!

little not fun fact, Marion entered into a relationship with Indiana Jones during this time (when she was 15, according to the novelization of Raiders of the Lost Ark). Jones abruptly left the Ravenwoods in 1926; Marion was about 16 or 17 years old when the relationship ended, and Jones was 27, ten years her senior. CRINGE!!!

They we’re digging in the wrong place because all they had was the one side that burned on his hand.

Since you're about to do "Temple of Doom" it might help to adjust expectations. You may know that many people dislike Doom for its cultural insensitivities, its histrionic female lead, and for its violence. (Though I would make the argument it's not that much more graphic than Raiders was.) However, I think if you go into it knowing about those issues, there's a better chance you can appreciate the great things it does: For better or worse, Spielberg goes all out in the outlandish set pieces and cartoonish tone. (In a weird way, it's among the most daring movies he's made.) Everything is turned up to an 11, and if you're into that, then that's actually a plus. Similarly, Harrison Ford goes "all in" with his performance, selling the humor and goofiness. His relationship with Ke Huy Quan is also outstanding, and the very fact that this new element was included shows that they didn't just want to repeat the same formula as Raiders. Finally, some of the most iconic set pieces and moments from the Indy franchise is here as well. And about the dark story: Try to look at it like a genre mashup. It's like Indy the adventurer has been plucked out of his typical setting and put into a horror movie. It's almost like a fan fiction in that regard, which is kind of cool.

Sorry for another long comment... I know it's become a popular theory that Indiana was pointless in "Raiders," but to give a serious answer to a jokey meme: Obviously, movies aren't just about getting from point A, to point B. They're about characters. And Indiana's experiences results in a character arc, both in his relationship with Marian and his view of the supernatural. The fact that he experienced these things justified him being in the story (and allowed the audience to vicariously share his adventure). On a more pragmatic level, in the very least, without Indy, Marian would've been tortured/killed by Nazis. He also ensured that the ark was in possession of the U.S. government at the end (for better or worse). (Assuming the Nazis were in contact with the homeland - after they destroyed themselves - the ark likely would've been retrieved by a follow-up crew from Germany.) An alternative theory is that the Nazis only showed up at Marian's bar to get the amulet because they were following him. In that case, he would be especially instrumental to the plot, as no one would've found the ark without him.

I gotta say as a kid I saw Raiders of the List Ark 5 times in the movie theater. And it will always be in my top favorites of all time. P S. There was a Wilhelm Scream when he was on the truck with the Ark hit the breaks and the car slammed into the back through which the Guy flew out onto the hood.
