Ok. Yup. I see why this saved the box office last summer. Wow, what a sequel!

Great reaction Jacqui. Definitely a great sequel. One nitpick. Mach and g forces are not the same thing. Mach refers to the speed of the aircraft. G forces the pressure on the body.

For some prime young-Val Kilmer, and a wonderful 80s movie that I was surprised to find was NOT directed by John Hughes, I highly suggest Real Genius.

Loved your reaction to this!

Charley was perfect for young Maverick but honestly they were always heading in different directions career wise and Charley was as focussed on her career as Maverick was. Their relationship was fireworks and passion. On the other hand Penny suits Mature Maverick, she has know him much longer she was first and was a girlfriend/friend back and forth over the years she has always been navy adjacent and they suit each other better in the present. Their relationship is understanding and compassion. Totally aside from this Kelly McGillis was essentially retired and was never going to be a part of this, there is a nice interview with etonline that let her talk about this and recasting her would have been disrespectful to her. More importantly, the relationship with Charley was a major (if not THE major) plot line in Top Gun and would have been much harder to balance in Maverick. This was all about Rooster and the Mission, Iceman's arc was easily handled and Penny could be a comfortable support arc.

Great reaction. As a long-time professional pilot (not military) in some pretty crazy flying for many years (Papua New Guinea, Alaska, and air ambulance), one of the things I most appreciated about the sequel is Maverick’s maturation as an airman. And by that I mean his attitude. He is still top level, but his attitude is mature and non-reckless. He still does insane stuff, but his attitude feels entirely different. I’ve been around all kinds of pilot personalities, and that character arc was perfectly done. Any professional pilot who has lost friends does change—becomes more introspective, more conscious of their limits, more aware of the people around them. And they built that in masterfully. Penny’s character really is the PERFECT realization of this profound character development, and so to me it fit absolutely flawlessly. Perfect sequel, perfect reaction!

Little late to the party, but it's not clear to me whether or not you knew that Val Kilmer had actually had throat cancer, thus the scenes with Ice.
