My brother thanks you all profusely for voting for this. He's been trying to get me to watch it for years, and I'm enjoying it already! 😄

The Expanse 1x01 Full Length Reaction

Comments

Emily Day

Ahh, I'm so excited you are reacting to this show. It's my favourite Sci-fi show ever made. I won't overload you with lots of information, as most of it is covered beautifully in the show's excellent exposition. But here are three quick notes: Yes, it was originally aired with SYFY, but with a production company called Alcon Entertainment, which still owns the rights under Amazon and continues to do so even now. The original story was told through a series of novels and novellas. The original writers, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham (under the pen name of James S. A. Corey) were involved in the production and the writing of some episode scripts, so it is also an excellent example of an adaption done right. Lastly, it's a little thing, but the boots are mag-boots. They use magnetism to stick to the ship's hull. One of the unique things about the world-building in The Expanse is the lack of the use of artificial gravity which can't be explained with today's science. So, all gravity is produced naturally through thrust, magnetism or spin gravity. Trust me, I am not great on the science myself, but the show does an excellent job of teaching you the information you need if you pay enough attention as it goes on. I really hope you continue to watch and enjoy it. This is a particularly great show for people who are good at paying attention and catching nuance, and it really rewards that, I think. When I heard you were reacting to this, I got particularly excited because I have loved your insightful commentary many times before (I got hooked on you way back when you first started Sense8). One of my favourite reactors and one of my favourite shows? I'm very excited!

I'm so glad you're excited! (As am I; this has been on my list for ages 😅) Thank you for the info! I literally knew nothing about this, so a bit of context definitely helps lol. I love that they make sure everything can be explained, and as a fellow non-sciency person, I REALLY appreciate it being done in a way I can understand 😂 I can't wait to keep going!

Thexx

Awesome! This and Firefly are why I joined. Looking forward to these two journeys.

Movie Night

Yay! Trust me, I'm just as excited. I've heard nothing but great things about both of them for years, and been dying to watch them. I hope you enjoy the journey 😄

Eli

Haven't seen this series before so I'm glad to start this with another first time watch buddy.

Mauler

The best hard sci-fi series ever TBH and the books are great! Very happy to be watching you watching this 😁

Thexx

That reminds me! I really need to continue the first book. The fact that it is hard sci-fi is such a bonus.

Mauler

They're very good! Babylon 5 is my other highly-rated TV sci-fi; it's the opposite of The Expanse in many ways but they share high quality cohesive writing which just makes them so special.

Fans have been speculating on what Ade Nygaard wanted to say to Holden before the explosion for years. Some say it was just has mundane has that she loved him or, the worse possibility, that she was pregnant.

Eric

By the time I got to the end of season 3, this replaced Battlestar Galactica as my favorite show of all time. Here comes the juice, let's go!

Eric

The Expanse, Battlestar Galactica, and Babylon 5 are my top three sci-fi shows.

Shep

Subbed for Expanse ;)

Movie Night

Woohoooo!!! Welcome 😄 I'm loving the series so far!

Even tho you said you kept the i9ntro in we couldn't hear the dialogue or music for over 90% of the intro. You seem to have issues with the mutes on the various feeds. Makes me question my investment in the Patreon!

Warren T. Griffin

Over 8:30 minutes in and still can't hear any of the movie. Probably going to cancel my Patreon.

The full length versions are sync-your-own-copy. Due to copyright restrictions, I can't post the entire episode, even as a private or unlisted video. I include little snippets and the timer to help you sync along. That's the only way I can do it, and I understand if that format isn't for everyone. Thank you for your support.

The official answer from Ty Franck (one half of James S. A. Corey) is that nobody knows, including the authors. It was just a hanging thread. This was on his and Wes Chatham's podcast (BTW don't search for, or watch it until after you've finished the series, there will be spoilers).

Got into watching you on YouTube with your Band of Brothers watch and mentioned in a comment that you might enjoy this show. Little did I know that your patrons had already steered you towards what, in my opinion, is the best scifi show of the past decade, perhaps even *the* best to date. I'm still a bit salty that there weren't any major nominations for the production, writing or performances. I came here for The Pacific watch and I'll definitely be staying for The Expanse. Might I also suggest a watch of some of Mike Flannigan's shows; specifically Haunting of Hill House once spooky season rolls around. I think you'll be floored by the incredible writing and camera work on that show. There's one particular episode I think will leave you speechless with it's long shots (18+ minutes!)

Your Brother is right, Youtube brought me here, I adore watching Expanse Reactions. You have a keen eye for detail and it will be a delight to watch you react to it. I was going to re-watch anyway, you just gave me a reason to do it this weekend.

I was just watching one of your Firefly reactions on YouTube. When you mentioned you were also watching The Expanse I was like WHAT WHAT??? and I had to come over here and subscribe. I _love_ this show. I've been through the whole series more times than I care to admit. So happy to be starting over again vicariously through your reactions. BTW, Alcon spent some $ on this show. IIRC, it was Ty Franck (one of the book authors who was also a writer/producer on the show) who said that internally, they often jokingly referred to it as "The Expense." :)

Stephen Caveney

Loved this first episode. Been meaning to watch this for ages. Loved your reaction. I agree with the Alien as regards to answering Scopulis sos (if only Ripley did ignored thier particular distress call). Going to watch pt2 right now.

it makes sense that in space there would be an obligation to assist another ship in need out there in the dark...but it also makes sense people with bad intentions would use that. the "we are obligated to check it out" is the price we pay for being responsible and civilized and humane...tha fact that it could bite us in the ass is the price for people being criminal and greedy. in the famous sci fi story "the star our destination" it is a story of revenge when a crew member is found on a disabled ship and the ship that finds him doesnt stop to save him...he then hunts them down to address the why you didnt save me. more to it then that but the revenge for not saving me is the driving force in the story :)
