LOVE that you kept saying spectacular because ironically it is a Spider-Man reference (Spectacular Spider-Man was a comic run)! hahaha! This movie is completely a 10/10!

So much fun watching your brain dissolve over the last 20 minutes of this movie! And I love that what you'll probably find on rewatches is that the best scenes in the film aren't even the mind-melting twists or explosive action scenes. They're the beautifully written, beautifully acted, and gorgeously rendered quiet moments interspersed between the big setpieces. Miles and Gwen's conversation on the skyscraper. Miles and his mother after the party. Gwen's reconciliation with her father. Every one of these scenes is so sharply written, and carry so much emotional and thematic weight. It's absolutely brilliant storytelling that adds SO much heft to the big crazy action stuff. (Also, special shout out to my personal favorite scene in the movie, which is Miles and Gwen's reunion as they websling through the streets of Brooklyn. That scene gives you a ton of exposition about Miguel, Hobie, and the Spider-Society, but in such breezy, natural fashion that you barely even notice the information you're absorbing. And it does so while simultaneously re-establishing the frankly ludicrous amount of chemistry these two characters have together, showing Gwen how much Miles has grown, planting the seeds for Miles' isolation arc, AND being a visually stunning music video on top of it all. It's a master class in filmmaking in the space of about two minutes.)

Hilarious reaction Jacqui. Loved the full on F bomb at the To Be Continue. That was my reaction at that point as well. Welcome to the boat of having to wait for the third. The mixture of different animation styles was absolutely seamless in this one. An Easter egg you missed was that the live action Asian store clerk was Mrs. Chen from the Venom movies, so you could say she seen weirder.

Yeah, my reaction in the (thankfully mostly empty theater) was basically yours. I can not agree more that this is such an amazing film, visuals and everything. The scenes with Gwen and her father were just so incredibly done in that Watercolor. I’m sure you’ll get more than enough Easter Eggs from people elsewhere, I won’t try. But I want to posit a theory here: Is Hobie (Spider-Punk) possibly behind this a little? It seems weird with all his comments that he’d be join a Spider-Society. He made some pretty specific comments about calling himself a hero, which seems like a shot at the too-serious Miguel. He prompts Miles on breaking out of the laser cage. When he dips after Miles begins his escape, and says he quits, he throws his bracelet away before going into his(?) universe…yet he apparently built one for Gwen and still can travel between universes (he also left Gwen’s universe). I kinda think he wants to take Miguel down for being too organized and too egotistical/maniacal behind this, and he intentionally befriended Gwen knowing it was his way to the anomaly…something a punk like him would like and could throw things off. How did he know that Miles was with Gwen in Mumbattan and chasing Spot? Miguel wouldn’t tell him that… I don’t think he’s evil. But he’s definitely on the chaos end of the scale, and maybe chaotic neutral. Just my random idea. Can’t wait for Masters of the Air with you!

There is a great video by a youtube channel Sideways where he talks about the music of the spiderverse and it really does a great job explaining how the score and soundtrack work together so well. There is a common musical motif where the music takes an octave jump up and then down. It plays through both movies a ton and represents Miles journey into becoming a spider person. When he is talking to his mom on the water tower and almost tells her he is spiderman. This motif plays, but then when he changes his mind and does not tell the truth, you hear the same jumps but each one is increasingly wrong version of the jump. The music itself subtly reinforces that Miles is making a mistake and not being his true self when he lies to his mom. I was so blown away in the theater at how much detail was put into a small musical moment and how powerfully and subtly it reinforces the themes of the movie.

You would enjoy the CinemaWins take on this film, I bet.

I could nerd out and rave about this movie for HOURS. The different styles of animation with full intent and purpose of design they teased in the first movie on full display here, especially the emotion driven watercolour world of Spider Gwen. I love how the background details melt away during the most impactful moments and you're just left with shapes and colours as the most basic tools to sell the moment. Hell, you could pause it at any point (and the rest of the movie, really) and it would be pure art worthy of a wallpaper/poster. That along with the music, both source and score in how they meld together to create what I can only describe as a masterpiece of cinema. Hell, just the opening 20 minutes before the credits is good enough to win oscars. I bet you could remove all the sound effects and voice acting from the audio track and it would still be as clear and impactful. One thing I would also want to praise is the inclusivity of this movie series and this version of Spiderman. A prominent person of colour in the lead role without it being just another version of the same character (barring canon events, cause those are important, ya know), but also there's a scene with handicapped kids playing basketball, Gwen has a "protect trans kids" flag in her room. Kudos to the writers and animators for going above and beyond of what is expected of them. Standing up for the underrepresented and giving them a powerful voice. The voice acting is top notch and the writing not afraid to fully embrace the cultural impact Marvel comics and the character of Spiderman has had on our society. I thought for the most part the story was rather formulaic, but you can't really expect this format of cinema to deliver ground breaking stuff in that area. You still have to cater to your audience. I think in that respect it was perfectly adequate and I can't wait for Beyond to wrap things up neatly (if that's even possible). I think I was one of the few people who actually caught the machine sending Miles to the wrong universe, but it is very easy to miss, however all the telltale signs are there if you keep an eye on them. I also think there's one thing they've telegraphed the entire film that will be the main story thread in Beyond. You can't eat your cake and have it too (yes, that is the correct turn of phrase, not the other way around) & two cakes. We now have two Mileses in Universe 42. eyes emoji If I had to pick a singular favourite moment, it would be the end scene in Peter B. and Mayday's room where the music just oh so perfectly transitions from Miles's theme to Gwen's rock band theme as she's out there starting a new band of her own to go after and help Miles. Anyway, I think I've ruminated on this enough. Can you tell I really like this movie? I'll probably see it a few more times before Beyond comes out and maybe notice and fall in love with another aspect of it that I had totally missed before.
