I'm so impressed! Loving this already! Also, apparently Austin Butler started filming this just a week after wrapping Elvis...and I can hear it just a tiny bit in this episode 😂

Masters of the Air Episode 1 Full Length Reaction

The environment they were in varied drastically and they captured it well, the viewership i think will be sort of split among two classes, enthusiasts in the aviation world and general viewers, satisfying both would be a hug challenge and I think they are doing a good job. Getting all the details to fully explain the uniqueness and foreign aspects but not get buried in them. The CGI I expect will underwelm enthusiasts slightly but given there are only a few air worthy b17s even in existence anymore, it's a necessary evil, can't do another Memphis Belle or 12 o'clock high but still satisfying.

Love that you are reacting to this and Band of Brothers. I'm a huge WWII Nerd especially the European war so I always am fascinated to see people react to this stuff.

I already posted the picture of my great great uncle who flew with the 390th on the discord but a lot of my family had ties to the European Theater, be it the 390th Bomb Group with my great great uncle or with the US 28th Division (the same Division you see retreating at the end of Episode 5 of Band of Brothers) where my great grandpa served. On a brighter note after he was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge he actually married his French nurse so that's why all the girls in my family have French names and the boys have Irish names. A bit of happy trivia there.

Oh also, I've seen the interiors of B-17s since I was a kid. There's an air museum near where I live and they have it very accurate in this show. The B-17 was TOUGH and they made THOUSANDS of them. They were the main bomber of the US Army Air Force (USAAF, the precursor the the Air Force which was made as its own branch in 1947) alongside the shorter twin tailed B-24 Liberator and the B-29 Super Fortress that only got to see action in the Pacific. There were medium bombers too, the light and medium bombers were made for front line support while the heavy bombers like the B-17 and B-24 would bomb things like factories, railway yards, dock facilities, oil fields and stuff like that. Basically if it produced supplies or was a way or hub to transport it they got bombed by the heavy bombers.

What? Why?WTF? I thought you were going to do BoB first? Still waiting for episodes 8-10. Or am I just too blind to see the posts?🤷🏼‍♂️

I read some articles here in the German press. They weren't too pleased with it,because it was too glamorous and even in the prisoner camp Butler's hair would be perfect. They were the opinion that Band Of Brothers was way better. I haven't seen any of it yet. Wanna wait til' I can binge all 10 episodes. 😉

You asked why they dumped the bombs in the sea instead of bringing them back? It would be incredibly dangerous to land with bombs onboard, because if something goes wrong, there's the possibility of them accidentally detonating. It's actually a practise that still gets used today, mostly for emergency landings. Better to waste the bombs than lose the men and plane.

Thank you for doing this show! Sorry I’m so late to watch it! You mentioned the music, and the slow building of the music adding instruments with each part of the plane coming to life on the checklist was BEAUTIFUL. Give an Emmy for just that scene! That also reminded me of the music used for the title of Andor. If you haven’t watched it, I recommend it (maybe even for reactions, but off in the future). And pay attention to the title music in each episode. The only hint I’ll give you is that is changes each time…

Oh, and I’m going to leave a conspiracy theory here, just as evidence that I guessed this. This show has been a long time coming. It was one of the earlier shows signed to Apple TV, and certainly with the names attached, it was a flagship show. But…why did it take so long? Shooting went on before and just after the pandemic, years ago. I’d heard Hollywood rumors that it was in the can long ago, and some thought it would see a Spring/Summer 2023 release. But they really waited…why? Well, one key I’ve thought…this show is special. It was actually the first show *filmed* by Apple Studios. Everything else was filmed by another company and distributed by Apple TV+ (such as Ted Lasso). And this debuted a literal week before the release of a certain brand new Apple Product, which will (among other things) offer brand new entertainment experiences. In fact, Episode 3 comes out on the product’s launch day. I have a wild theory that possibly as soon as episode 3, there’s going to be a sequence in Masters of the Air that will feature an Immersive Action sequence that can be enjoyed on the Apple Vision Pro! Can you imagine the next squadron fight…seeing it in 180° video from a gunner’s well as fighters fly by, and planes explode all around you? It’s just a theory. I have zero inside info. But if you’re going to pilot something like that…having Spielberg, Hanks, and Fukunaga producing it would be the way to debut that sort of experience. (And make Christopher Nolan want to shoot a whole movie in it, no doubt!)
