So, technically I have a schedule of movies planned for the next few months, but I've gotten a flood of recommendations of what I should watch after BoB/ThePacific/MotA, so I'd love to add some of them to the docket. I've included a list of the big ones that I've already seen, but what else would you guys recommend? (And it doesn't have to be WWII--could just be in the genre, or something you think I'd enjoy!) Or, would you like me to go back and do re-watch commentaries to some of these movies? (ie "Why Saving Private Ryan is the greatest WWII movie ever, etc). That's something I've been starting to experiment with, so I would certainly consider it.

I've already seen...

1. Saving Private Ryan

2. Schindler's List

3. Inglourious Basterds (one of my ALL TIME favorite movies)

4. Dunkirk (was lucky enough to see it in 70mm IMAX, but only saw that one time, so I actually don't remember much)

5. Empire of the Sun

6. 1917

7. Pearl Harbor

I'm sure there are more, but I'm struggling to think of them off the top of my head...

Second Blackhawk Down. Hacksaw Ridge is also worth a watch. If you want to delve into the American Civil War, try Glory.

Trey Porter

For now I'll say Malcolm X for black history month. Even though I have a whole list of black movies I think you'd really like and enjoy, I'll just recommend malcolm x for now. Top 2 Denzel Washington performance for me.

Dexter

Hacksaw Ridge starring Andrew Garfield would be an incredible addition to your "already seen" list if you haven't seen it already. Set in ww2 in the pacific theatre, it would go great in conjunction with the Pacific.

celilmandir

If you want to do more tv shows, I highly recommend watching The Wire. It's an older show but it aged very, very well, it's one of the top rated ones on IMDB.

Ian Forbes

Lots of good recommendations already. I’ll throw in a war-adjacent film in Atonement starring James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, and introducing a young Saoirse Ronan to the mainstream with her supporting actress Oscar nomination. It also has one of the phenomenal long shots in terms of scope and scale, especially for its time.

Beard2134

Black hawk down, hacksaw ridge, the dirty dozen, forest gump. As for others not in the "war" relem, Brigsby Bear is one of my favorite feel good movies and has a great cast. For a movie into a TV series the Fargo movie followed by the show would be awesome

GavinGuile

"Jojo Rabbit" directed by Taika Waititi is amazing. You'll love it.

PluePlue

Gonna take the easy way out. Everything everyone above me has already said lol

Bubba Fett

As long as you have apple for MotA, the complete works of hanks is there with greyhound.

Xeph

Not a movie, but just gunna throw Black Sails in here too.

Nick

Have you seen Tick Tick Boom? That’s a really good movie.

Vastate

Das Boot comes to mind, if you're comfortable with subtitles and foreign films.

Andrew Nguyen

Casablanca (1942) is a classic for so many reasons. It's a beautiful romance story that has the distinction of being set in World War II, while WWII was going on!

Eli

13 Hours and Black Hawk Down are both good movies

Driver BP

Starship Troopers.

Travis Otten

Just going to throw some stuff out there... Cyberpunk: Edge Runners (Netflix), For All Mankind (appletv), Last Samurai, and Legend of Vox Machina (amazon). I would also suggest Thin red line and Memphis Belle because of MotA and The Pacific but I can also see not wanting to do just ww2 stuff.

Laurent Tirta

Death of Stalin is an excellent comedy to examine

Lee Aguera

Absolutely Hacksaw Ridge

Inhonor Oftrip

A couple of movies set around the time period: 1941 (1979 Spielberg movie), and A League of Their Own (1992)

Russell Roberts

If you are looking for more movies in the 'war' vein, two really good ones are Black Hawk Down (which is more modern), and Hacksaw Ridge, a WW2 movie about the only conscientious objector who earned a Medal of Honor.

BuckeyeNE

All quiet on the western front! Very gritty movie meant to show the horrors of just how meaningless the losses of WW1 felt. Watch in the original German!

TB

vito virgilio

We were soldiers, lone survivor, midway, black hawk down, 13 hours

Alex Amerling

If you want a good one from the German perspective of WWII, I recommend Das Boot. Long movie but really intense and well done. Always found it interesting to see it from the enemy side.

Josie Lawson

Behind enemy lines, heartbreak ridge, the thin red line, enemy at the gate… so many great movies

Laurent Tirta

Just thought about the duology of Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Also an *excellent* one about the Iraq War is the miniseries Generation Kill

Dave Williams

3 Suggestions: 1. The Imitation Game. 2. JoJo Rabbit. 3. It's a bit of a departure from your other ideas, but it IS a WWII movie: Grave of the Fireflies.

Alfy

I would suggest...Jessica Jones....Theories in Chemistry.....or any Ryan Reynolds movie :)

Emily Day

I second other people suggesting JoJo Rabbit, Theories in Chemistry and Hacksaw Ridge and then for something completely different and fun, and animated, I recommend Vox Machina.

Daniel Böhrk

I would recommend: Das Boot Full Metall Jacket Enemy at the Gates

Einherj

In no particular order. WW2: Jojo Rabbit (2019) The Unknown Soldier (2017) Downfall (2004) Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) The Pianist (2002) The Imitation Game (2014) Other War: Platoon (1986) Glory (1989) Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) Troy (2004) Generation Kill (2008, miniseries) Other: The Fifth Element (1997) Labyrinth (1986) Robocop (1987) City of God (2002) The Road Warrior (1981) Deadwood (2004-2006, series) Superbad (2007) Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) Everything Is Illuminated (2005) Total Recall (1990) Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Aliens (1986) Office Space (1999) Starship Troopers (1997) The Death of Stalin (2017) Sin City (2005) The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) Goodfellas (1990)

Thierry Fournier

Here are the ones that comes to mind: Passchendaele Hacksaw Ridge The Patriot Fury The Monuments Men La Vita E’ Bella (Life is Beautiful) The Great Escape

Johannes Kverno

Generation War (Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter). A German miniseries about WWII, but from the perspective of five young friends with different backgrounds and experiences. I would also recommend Generation Kill, depicting a journalists own experiences as he was following a unit of marines during the invasion of Iraq.

W Gandy

May I suggest you watch "Mr. Roberts" (1955). It has an all star cast (Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell, and Jack Lemmon to name a few). It is not the heavy drama like many of the other movies suggested to you but is more of the tale of those who served their country during WWII but not on the front lines. Fonda plays a cargo ships executive officer in the Pacific who feels the war is passing him by. It was nominated for 3 academy awards (Best Picture, Best Sound and Best Supporting Actor). Jack Lemmon won the latter.

Jeroen

Would love to see a re-watch/commentary on 1917. And than follow it up with the movie "War Horse" it's a movie about a beautiful horse during WW1 (it's another project by Steven Spielberg. And the music is by John Williams. Cast includes: Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson, Peter Mullan) also, I don't see FURY on the list! FURY is a tank movie that takes place during WW2 (by David Ayer. Cast includes: Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeaouf, Jon Bernthal, Michael Pena, Logan Lerman, Jason Isaacs) Kelly's Heroes, is also a WW2 tank movie. But it's known as a "WW2 Comedy Drama Heist" movie. Which is basically about a race between German and American troops trying to get to a big stockpile of gold bars. by Brian Hutton. When it comes to the cast, the name Clint Eastwood may ring a bell. MIDWAY is also a great WW2 movie. It starts with Pearl Harbor, and it basically shows America's response to what happened. Also it's one of the few movies that shows both sides. The cast includes: Woody Harrelson, Ed Skrein, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Dennis Quaid, Mandy Moore, Patrick Wilson, Jake Manley and Nick Jonas.

Travis Otten

Oh would also suggest the original Dune extended cut and Dune Part 1 since Part 2 releases march 1st.

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

As long as you are doing World War II movies, consider me another voice for JoJo Rabbit! Great movie! But outside of that, I’d still recommend “The Sandman”. I think it is a series you would be absolutely gobsmacked by.

Bill B.

Hacksaw Ridge. WWII based on a true story. I never thought anything would be better than saving Private Ryan but this one is

Jeremy

I saw one other person mention Generation War and I'd second that. It's another miniseries about WWII, but from the perspectives of 5 young German friends, 3 men and 2 women. At the start of the war they are all together, but life takes them all in very different directions. It doesn't have the production quality of BoB, but the acting and writing are excellent. Also, it shows a perspective of the war that most of us probably haven't ever seen or considered. Past Lives was my favorite movie from last year, so I'd recommend that as well. It's the story of a woman who has been separated from her childhood sweetheart after emigrating from Korea, but meets him again 20 years later. It was written and directed by first-timer, Celine Song, and is a beautiful film.

Kikush Tothova

If you haven’t watched it yet, I would recommend All the light we can not see.

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

Oh! Again, not war related, but I highly, HIGHLY recommend Severance. It is so very very good, and I believe you will find delight in all technical aspects you love: The lighting and cinematography are precise and haunting, and reminds me of another visually unconventional and beautiful show, Mr. Robot. The acting is top notch. And the story is one of the most unique sci-fi concepts you'll see. Oh, and also the most unexpected gentle romance you never knew you wanted to see! So yeah, please consider Severance!

Richard Higgs

For movies, Fury, Fight Club and Forest Gump. For tv, please add 12 Monkeys tv series to your list, probably won’t win any polls, because not enough people know about it or realize how good it is, but it is absolutely one of the best shows ever. It is 4 seasons long, which they planned, so they could story board the whole thing and weave time travel plots throughout the whole show. So, just in case you ever do a poll for sci-if or apocalypse or time travel shows, hopefully you can throw it in there.

Squeaky

Hmm... if you'd like to stay in the war film genre for awhile, here would be my personal options: Civil War - Ken Burns' Civil War documentary series, Glory and possibly Gettysburg depending on how ambitious you are. WW1 - Either version of All Quiet on the Western Front WW2 - Midway Vietnam - Platoon War Comedy - Tropic Thunder There are plenty of other good entries into this particular genre, but those are the ones that immediately spring to mind :-)

WastedPo

Born on the Fourth of July (1990): No one ever reacts to it, so you could break new ground. Directed by Oliver Stone, starring Tom Cruise, based on a true story. (It also has one of John Williams's best music scores.) It was nominated for multiple awards but seems to have fallen off the radar. (I suspect it's because it's not a "rah-rah" movie.) To be clear, it's more of a character drama about the after-effects of war, rather than wall-to-wall battle scenes.

Harm

so this is kinda out of left field, but you said it could be anything we think you might enjoy. So if you are open to do animated series, I think you might enjoy The Legend of Vox Machina. It also has an interesting backstory.

kachow6969

if you're open to anything, i try to get everyone to watch the haunting of hill house. so hard to describe, but so so good

GeneralMartok11

Since your list seems to be revolving around WWII/Holocaust, I would highly recommend the film "Fury" with Brad Pitt and Shia LeBeouf. A very gritty portrayal of an American tank crew in the last months of the war. I would also recommend "Hacksaw Ridge" with Andrew Garfield, and directed by Mel Gibson. It is the true story of a combat medic who served in the Pacific at Okinawa.

Rick

The new Midway is good. Patton. Dirty Dozen. Kelly's Heroes.

Chris LaLonde

Not sure if you have already reacted to Greyhound yet, but if not, and you want another Tom Hanks WWII production, I highly recommend it. Tom Hanks plays the lead role in this one and you can watch it on Apple TV. His character commands a convoy of ships that protect supply ships against German subs. I think you and the community would love it. Other notable war movies (Vietnam War) I recommend are : 1. We Were Soldiers 2. Full Metal Jacket (Directed by Stanley Kubrick) 3. Platoon (Written and directed by Oliver Stone) 4. Hamburger Hill

Jim Finley

Here are some great ones, from the perspective of a retired Marine and 50+ year student of history: 1. Tora Tora Tora (far more accurate than Pearl Harbor, filmed by a Japanese crew from the Japanese POV and an American film crew from the US POV) 2. Midway (the new one) 3. Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers (Eastwood's matched set on the battle of Iwo Jima, one from the Japanese POV and one from the American POV) 4. Cross of Iron (WW2 Russian front) 5. A Bridge Too Far (Operation Market Garden) 6. Defiance (Jewish partisans in WW2) 7. Twelve O'Clock High (American bomber crews, WW2) 8. Fury 9. The Best Years of Our Lives (vets returning from WW2 & readjusting) 10. Generation Kill (Iraq war miniseries) 11. Black Hawk Down (Somalia) 12. Jarhead (Desert Storm) 13. Restrepo (Afghanistan) 14. Lone Survivor (Afghanistan) 15. The Outpost (Afghanistan) 16. Zero Dark Thirty (the Bin Laden raid) 17. The Siege of Jadotville (Irish UN peacekeepers in Africa - a neglected masterpiece) 18. Ken Burns documentary miniseries: The Civil War 19. Ken Burns documentary miniseries: The War (WW2) 20. Ken Burns documentary miniseries: The Vietnam War

Alex Amerling

Also recommend Das Boot and Full Metal Jacket

Dan Bisbocci

Late to the party on this but I think a great series recommendation would be Peaky Blinders if you haven’t seen it already!

Forodrim

If you go with WW II highly recommend "das boot" for non war themed i would recommend "Moon" or maybe "wolfwalkers"
