Percy Jackson 1x08 Full Length Reaction

A little Book Knowledge if you're interested! In the book, Gabe was a real piece of work. He stole Percy's pocket money to fund his constant gambling, and used Sally (who was much more meek in the book) basically as his housekeeper, and also took most of her money too. Sally stayed with Gabe because his incredibly strong smell masked Percy from the monsters for years, literally saving his life by staying with his stepdad. At the end of the book, Gabe tries to kick Percy out of the house for ruining his car (and a sort of prank Percy played on him), and when Sally tries to intervene but is stopped by a gesture from Gabe, Percy realizes that Gabe has been hitting her. Percy asks her in private about it and the Medusa head shows up. Sally decides to take matters into her own hands and later she sells a very accurate stone statue to an art museum. So, basically, Gabe was a domestic abuser in the book, and Sally Jackson killed him. 😂 I guess they got around the moral implications a bit in the show by having Gabe be less scummy but then find the package on his own and open it out of spite. Hoisted by his own petard I suppose, but I still think they should have made him deserve it a little more.

Bonus Book Fact (if you want) because they didnt ever address it in the show: During the adventure, Gabe accused Percy of doing something to Sally and running away after wrecking the car, and them being wanted by the police is resolved when the cops show up to the Ares fight at the beach. The Mist pretty much made them see a shootout between the two, and afterwords the public assumes Percy, Annabeth, and Grover were actually kidnapped and hauled across the country by the Creepy Guy from the Diner (Ares) until they escaped. The public pools money to get the kids home to NYC in time. Oh, and they didn't miss the deadline in the book. I think the idea in the show of Poseidon 'surrendering' is basically to illustrate that warfare between the gods is largely a matter of pride (for them anyway) rather than power, since the status quo usually stays the same. By swallowing his pride and submiting to Zeus to save his son, Poseidon basically fought, lost, and ended the war without any casualties.

Definitely share it if you end up watching the documentary! It’s a really interesting insight both the production side of the show, but also what this adaptation means to the fans, and the author himself!

Just a little info about the necklaces that Annabeth and Luke had. They're camp half blood necklaces that all campers receive. Each bead on them signifies each year a camper has spent at camp. So Annabeth and Luke both have a lot because they've been at camp for a long time. You can see Percy has one as well with one bead on it towards the end of the episode. At the end of the summer the camp chooses the most significant/important event of that year and the bead that each camper gets represents that. The new bead at the end of this season is a trident on a black background to represent the son of Poseidon's quest to the underworld. Keep an eye out for what they are in future seasons;)

Adding my support for a Black Sails reaction. Bit of a content warning for it though, very mature show in a similar vein to GoT. It has amazing writing and it just gets better and better as it goes along.

You should definitely watch the documentary. I loved it and would happily see your reaction to it. I got so emotional seeing how they brought my childhood to life. The only thing I felt robbed on was Poseidon says to Percy in the book "Your mother is a queen among women". Sally deserves everything. The do you dream of mom line though did destroy me haha.

Great reaction. Seeing you go on this quest was truly a joy. Here is my obligatory Greek myth trivia for this episode (and also for last week, because I didn't get around to do it then) 1) the golden blood is from the myths. It's called ichor 2) If a mortal sees a god in their true form, they turn to dust. once upon a time Zeus had one of his frequent affairs with a mortal princess. His wife, Hera, goddess of matrimony found out. She visited her husbands mistress in a dream and said: "The man you are sleeping with is no other than Zeus and you are carrying his child. You deserve to see what the father of your child really looks like and this is how you can make him show his true self..." followed by a set of instructions that would require a tangent to explain. The princess followed the instructions and Zeus was forced to show himself to her in all his godly glory. For a split second the princess was happier than any human had ever been, for she had seen true divinity. Then she burned to a pile of ash. Her unborn child however survived and would grow up to call Percy "Peter". 3) In Greek mythology the underworld operates on a good place, bad place, medium place model. 90% of people come to the medium place when they die. That's where they lost Anabeth last week. Asphodel is just a big desert plane of nothingness where souls have to spend eternity with nothing but the existential dread that comes with the realisation that you have archived nothing with your life worthy of praise or punishment. Not quite sure where the vines binding you are coming from. If someone could point me to the source for that element I'd be very happy. Tataros is hell. It's where those who deserve special punishment go. Sisiphos rolling that rock, Tantalus being always hungry but never getting to eat and Chronos being sliced into a million little pieces. Elysium is the good place where only the most heroic, those with the most glory go. If you go there you might even get a chance to reincarnate as a new being on earth. Finally a show recommendation: Continuing the theme of "TV adaptation of a beloved YA book with an less than stellar prior movie adaptation" my i request "His Dark Materials"? The BBC/HBO show based on The Golden Compass/Northern Lights and its sequels is severely underrated and I think you would vibe with it really well. Plus there is some small but fun overlap in terms of cast.

In case no one told you the significance of blue food. Gabe once argued with Percy that food couldn't be blue. Sally would go on to look for blue food or use food coloring to make Percy blue food like the blue candy in ep 1 and the blue pancakes. Most of the food they ate going fowards would be blue. Another little tid bit of showing how much she loves Percy.

Natalie Rios

yes!!!!! please react to the documentary!! i’d love to see your reaction to the amount of love that went into this series!!

The betrayal hits so much harder in the show so much more emotional ( Probably the BEST change from book to show). In the book Luke actually released a scorpion onto Percy and actually tried to full on kill him, no recruiting or anything. he proceeds to say he has 60 seconds until he dies from the venom and leaves through the portal. Annabeth doesn't catch him either, Percy has to drag himself all the way to camp until they find him and he tells them what happens. This hits so much more differently considering you can tell in Luke's eyes it pains him to do this. You can tell he doesn't want to kill/hurt Percy. ESPECIALLY after seeing Annabeth. I mean that is his family that is her family and he would rather run than have to fight her and possibly hurt her. Annabeth's reaction too, broke my heart. They didn't even have to say much their eyes said everything. Leah (Annabeth) and Charlie (Luke) did such a good job ALL The KIDS DID they are amazing. LIKE WALKER HELLO Someone here already said it and you probably will but It would really be great for you to check out the documentary. Don't worry there are no spoilers for future books just the show in itself. I'm so sorry about the long comment but I also have to say this. The kids especially the trio really proved everyone wrong with the series. When the casting came out so much backlash happened especially with Leah because they didn't look like their characters. Leah got it the absolute worst because she plays Annabeth who is a "blonde white girl with grey eyes" there were so many racist comments thrown at her and her accounts even got banned because 30-year-old grown men couldn't stop bullying a 12 year old girl because keep in mind she is 14 now but she was 12 when cast. Even though Rick (the author himself) cast her saying she is the perfect Annabeth and that they were going more for characterization than looks and that she was perfect. Same with Walker (Percy) people were coming at him for not having green eyes and dark hair like in the books. Aryan (Grover) too since he was depicted as a "white" character also. But wow they proved everyone wrong and they killed it I really couldn't have imagined a better fit than them and I'm so glad we were gifted with such amazing actors.

Aryel

yes to the documentary!!

Okay so many things, first of all, YES to reacting to Black Sails omg, I'm so glad it's having a mini resurgence thanks to Toby's role as Poseidon, we are winning him the Emmy he deserved for Black Sails. Second of all, it's been a joy watching your reactions, as a book fan, who LOVED the series, seeing someone who has no previous knowledge was very fascinating. Honestly this finale was amazing, and just to entice you even more to watch Black Sails, the entire like crew, is from Black Sails, from the writers, to 3 of the actors (Medusa and the voice of Kronos are also from BS), and the flashbacks to luke leading up to the final confrontation are very much inspired on an episode of Black Sails. I found that this was a great first season where they've already layed foundations for themes that will be very important throughout the 5 season run (which we WILL GET), and the changes implemented are also to the benefit of the story, Rick is helping write the show, and it's been 20+ years since the first book was released, he has said that he's just making the changes that he would if he were to write it today, and also with the hindsight of future books. Anyways, thank you so much for uploading these and sharing your thoughts<3

We’d LOVE to see you watching the documentary.
