Thanks for this video, Jacqui! Was waiting anxiously! So, first things off: If you got killed, or were more than a couple hours overdue, they wasted no time; your locker and personal belongings were moved out immediately. As for Munster, historically, there was a lot of grumbling over this mission. The official designation of the target is "worker housing" so they were making no bones about hitting civilians, and a lot of the crews were not happy about it. The men of the USAAF at that time prided thenselves on not deliberately hitting civilians, so this was a real "this is not what I signed up for" vibe. Except for men like Bucky, who'd lost friends and especially those who'd visited London and seen what the Germans had done to the people there. A lot of them were pretty enthusiastic about getting revenge. I LOVED the take-off scene, because for the most part, I was really feeling it. The sound of the engines and all (been up in propeller-driven aircraft a lot in my life) and I too love those "Go-Pro" shots. Really puts you there.

Incidentally, there were actually a few hundred bombers; it wasn't a hundred fighters against only 11 bombers. But because they got too far away from the groups ahead and the groups behind is why the 100th got nailed.

So awful seeing 'She's Gonna' collide with the other plane, and knowing Bubbles is in there. I mean, it's always awful, but when you know who it is in that plane...

Technically we had one ship that did the whole mission that came back. But there were 3 Forts that turned back before entering the combat zone. Now its possible those ships went down through mechanical failure, but its also possible that those ships did return to England. So yes massive casualty by percentage, but far less than the full number of those that went down in episode 3. They go for a more intimate look of the ships and the crew interacting with the ship. But all designed to give impact. Works thematically, but also to the actual reality of the situation because with just 11 forts in combat it's technically the smallest air group in combat that we have ever been shown to date. Thus vastly more intimate than the larger scale air group missions. While the larger air groups have the pack, where you technically have more security you would naturally showcase that with more wide shots to sell that aspect to the audience. Now after the loss of the rest of the forts, we also see for the first time a fort actually maneuver in combat. Showing that the planes did have the ability to do so especially after losing their payload, and the weight associated with it. It also highlights the pilot skills of Rosenthal, who was a trained combat pilot.

Rosenthal was an absolute LEGEND, by the way.

The takeoff scene with the music, in particular where the did the panoramic shift showing all the planes climbing is probably my favorite of the show so far. It rivals the takeoff scene from Memphis Belle which I might still give an edge too since they had a half dozen fortresses to actually film but it's a close call. In another documentary I've seen, they describe it as being on death row, and every day you wake up, and wonder of its today or if you get one more. That mental toll is starting to show. Linking to BoB every mission is bastone, then having to climb back in and do it again tomorrow with that glimmer of hope of 25 but thats a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow they know they will never reach.

I am pretty sure that there are 2 shots of Buck from the intro we haven´t seen in the show yet. My hope is we get to see him at the end of the next episode. Also, "Blue eyes" is Rosie Rosenthal, one of the leads of the second half of the season and a legend in the 100th.

Really looking forward to the next episode and see if the downed pilot (sorry sitll not memorizing the names like I did with BOB) escapes the Germans.

15:00 Point of note here. They aren't talking about the 100th but the other bomber squadrons that are supposed to be flying instead of them. The 100th is not the only squadron that took heavy losses. Also, the reason they have so few bombers is not because they got shot down, but because of the bombers that survived episode 3 and 4 were too damaged to be repaired. They still had plenty of guys left, just not enough planes to put them in the air.

No Jacqui, no, never shut up, keep talking, we love every second!!! Haha thank you for this reaction, it really is an incredible episode and the best so far. I agree with the other guy in the comments, the sequence with the glorious soundtrack when they burst through the clouds is one of my favorite aviation scenes ever now. The music has a "glorious death" feel to it, especially when you realize 95% of them wont make it back. It really is powerful stuff and I'll carry and pass on the memory of these men until the day I die. The soldiers in Europe, the pilots, the sailors, the Marines in the Pacific, ground crews, factory workers, all of them.

How come there’s no audio from the series?

Being a WWII history nerd, the second they said Munster, I knew this was going to be a rough episode. It keeps impressing me how close they got to the memoirs written by the survivors from the 100th.
