Nobody puts Baby/River in the corner! Especially not when she's wearing a pretty pink dress! (Also, I forgot to make a Monty Python duck/witch joke, and I'm ashamed of myself).

Firefly 1x05 Full Length Reaction

Summer Glau was home schooled from grade 3 to 12 so she could train with a ballet company. She also trained in some ballroom styles like the Tango and Flamenco

It is almost criminal that this series only lasted 1 season!!!

Great reaction! I felt this was the mildest episode overall, enjoyable outside of the unkindness to Kaylee 😡 The remaining episodes are more fun and/or interesting, and I'm sure you'll be entertained!

I always find it funny that reactors of a certain age immediately recognize Zac Effron. As an older fan, I never knew. LOL I don't know if you saw it the same way, but I always viewed this episode as reinforcing the idea of family and home. If you imagine Mal as the father figure on the crew, then River's line "Daddy will come and take us home" hits differently when compared to how their actual father behaved.

I’m so excited for you. You’re heading into a stretch of absolutely brilliant episodes.

I think out of all of the episodes of Firefly, this is the episode that I’ve most come to appreciate more as I’ve gotten older. At first, I was most interested in and invested in Book’s story and background. But the more I’ve rewatched, I’ve come to understand just how much this showed of Simon’s life, why he was so pompous and snarky, and where he began to change. The final sequence is filled with so much quiet (maybe silent) symbology of him having come from money and education and wealth, but never really from a place of home (or at least, a good home). Even the nice things his father did came couched with conditions (“You must become a brilliant doctor”)…and even then, he clearly favored his son over his daughter…and perhaps the seeds for some jealousy plots in an unrealized future between brother and sister. But in Serenity, he has people he fights with, doesn’t like, but who are open and honest in their disdain. And yet, he already belongs in a way that is above reproach or question. Love is not always like, but loyalty comes from honesty. I have come to adore the final shot of the dinner. Everyone having a wonderful meal, even Jayne laughing with the crew. Simon trying to make an amend with Kaylee, starting with holding the chair out. It may have no dialogue, but it’s a scene filled with chatter and laughter. God damn, I love it. Also, now that you have a hint a bit more about River, Jacqui, go back to this line and ponder what she has come from: “Don’t shove needles in my eyes and ask me what I see!!!” 😬 I’ll save my thoughts about Book for another comment…there’s more to come on that topic… #MovieNight - The more I see you geek out about the technical side of this, PLEASE watch Severance!!! I think you will be so geeked about how well Ben Stiller made it. #MovieNight - Also, please watch The Sandman. I just think you’ll love it, and not enough people have reacted to it yet! Yours would be great!

That dinner scene at the end reminds me why I sometimes just re-watch the show not for the stories, but to just spend time with my crew.

I have this hare-brained theory that the Tams were already afraid of River to some extent, seeing her so uncannily intuitive (maybe even realizing she is a reader for real). Call back to ep1 when Simon says, "When I tell you that my sister makes me look like an idiot child. I want you to understand my full meaning." and, "River was more than gifted, she was a gift. Everything she did; music, math, theoretical physics, even-- even dance-- *There was nothing that didn't come as naturally to her as breathing does to us.*" The Tams saw that (maybe not as quickly or as clearly as Simon did). Then the parents' evasive attitudes when Simon is trying to point out what he noticed in River's letters (especially the code -- "It's one of her silly games!" says mom) makes me think they 'sold their daughter down the river' so to speak. Get her "off to school" and let the government deal with her. I say either the Tams contacted the government who knew of the Academy -or- the government put out 'feelers; for gifted individuals and the Tams jumped on this chance to 'help' River learn (getting her out of their hair at the same time). The hard parts were keeping their true intention from their daughter, and then keeping Simon out of the loop, because they knew he was pretty damn smart too.

What's that make us? Big dman heroes. Aint we just.

Barry

Simon has a habit of sticking his foot in his mouth around Kaylee. Also, Babylon 5 (93-98) was a good sci-fi series with a long form story.

Dennis Marshall

Just to echo off of Barry on 8/7 Babylon 5 was such a cohesive long-form story. Strazinski (hope I spelled that right) wrote something like 90% of the episodes & they will constantly refer back to earlier episodes in earlier seasons (there was a critical reference to a 1st season episode in season 4) and it was absolutely seamlessly executed. He even wrote in outs for characters if the actors didn’t stay with the show- which happened twice. It’s well worth a watch.
