Hi Jacqui, so, this episode is in March 1944. D-Day is June 6, 1944. Monte Cassino goes on for months. It’s horrific. The Great Escape, when the Brits broke out of Stalag-Luft III, is an amazing story in its own right (even without Steve McQueen leaping fences on a motorcycle). The X Organization(which was the group of POWs working to escape) numbered in the hundreds. There were the tunnelers, the scroungers, the forgers, the stooges(the lookouts), the penguins (the guys who distributed the dirt) tailors, cooks, and intelligence guys, who vetted people and helped with gathering rail schedules, maps, etc. It was incredible. Other slang: Goons - Germans Ferrets - Specially trained guards whose job it was to find contraband or tunnels. Oh, and what did I tell ya about the Little Friends? 😀 The Mustangs made all the difference.

I really agree on your appreciation of the music. It really takes it to the next level emotionally. Watch the scene in Ep 3, when the 100th gets slaughtered, but with the volume turned off. It’s nowhere near so impactful or devastating.

To give a further idea of the scope of aerial warfare in WW2, the US produced on the order of 300,000 aircraft by the end of the war. General estimates of total losses (including training accidents, transit losses, and combat) are around 65,000. Also, bear in mind that the RAF suffered staggering losses as well. According to the UK National Archives: of around 125,000 aircrew lost by RAF Bomber Command, 57,205 were killed, 8,403 were wounded in action, and 9,838 became prisoners of war. source: https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/remembering-the-men-of-bomber-command/

I am finally wrapping my head around the fact that there was so much fighting BEFORE D-Day. But it is weird to me that there are only a couple episodes left when there was so much war to come. I wonder where on the timeline of the war that they will end it.

I will say the American POWS were lucky to have not been Russian. Their treatment at the hands of the Germans was genocidal.

I'm not recommending this for a reaction, but if you want to go down a documentary rabbit hole, check out Ken Burns' documentaries on the Civil War, WW2, and Vietnam.

Agreed! As a veteran, a student of history for fifty years, and a retired psychotherapist, I can only say all three mini-series are brilliant.

Here's a thought: the penultimate episode of MoTA, just judging by the trailers, deals with D-Day. That is where BoB begins...
