"Between the hair and the sleeveless [shirts]... is he living on the beach?" - Andrew on Magneto

On the first official episode of this inaugural season of Too Old for This Shit, we're kicking things off talking about the first two episodes of the all-new Marvel cartoon, X-Men '97! The two episodes discussed here are episode one, "To Me, My X-Men," and episode two, "Mutant Liberation Begins."

How fantastic does all the animation look? Why do they still have Jean Grey fainting every chance she gets? How great is it that Cyclops is cool now? Why can't Wolverine drive to the hospital normally? Is this Magneto's sexiest haircut? Should the show drop in some period-appropriate pop music? And how many C.H.U.D.s are gonna get pissed off at this cartoon because they've been watching and reading X-Men wrong this whole time? PLUS: Who wouldn't want Sexy Breakfast with Gambit?

This first series of Too Old for This Shit is going to cover the first season of the all-new Disney+ show, X-Men ’97. The full release schedule is available on our website.

Storm's lightning turning the sand into glass was a nice touch

X said the head got fired over being a huge nightmare to work with and slinging peen on Onlyfans. Considering his socials are nuked that fits. After seeing those eps... get the man some therapy and delete the OF he is clearly the guy .

Capping off one of the best pound-for-pound WHM weeks that my unreliable short-term memory can recall. Some good cooking, gentlemen.

Matt

Love the show, and love the show about the show!

Chris Tobias

Never been a big X animated series fan, but have been a huge Cyclops supporter for years. Glad to see how much play Clops is getting and how this is actually a pretty great show.

I.C. Weiner

Isn't that all speculation?

Great episode and it is great to hear you guys get to cover something new that rocks *vigorously knocks on wood*. I love the different history and perspective you each have for the show. I can't remember which one of you said it, but this show is perfect for kids too, my son has never cared about X-Men, including the original series, but he loved these episodes. Also, thanks Eric for letting me know where I can buy some sweet adult merch. Can't wait for April 5th.

The M. Emmett Walsh impressions hit different today, with him passing this week. He spent summers here in Vermont, just down the road from me. Such a lovely man. He will be greatly missed all around. Your impressions are my favorite. ❤️

Capping off the best 2-week stretch of WHM content I can remember no less - you guys rock & can't wait to explore Magneto's budding sex life together in the coming months

Alex Murica

I saw that one clip of Cyclops using his beams to wavedash and was immediately sold on the show lol

the continuity on the old show never made much sense, they would leave little easter eggs for future storylines that weren't always followed through on and a lot of characters would show up in the background that when introduced didn't really fit with their previous background appearances. the origin of the original team was never really made clear, since Beast was always furry and blue in the show and they never fully referenced him being any different. But in the later season episodes there was a bit of animation of the original 5 X-Men in the Danger Room, but was never fully explained beyond "the original team", but that few seconds of animation was reused a number of times, I think even in the 5th season that was done in a completely different animation style and had completely different character designs. Interesting they decided to pick up from that ending rather than the ending of the 4th season that was written and intended to be the end of the show.

Jason

Do miss that Steve After Dark won’t be a running gimmick.

Frank Grimes

Loved this. Gotta catch the actual episodes this weekend though

Reed Elam

I don't get the love for the animation. It just looked like cheap flash animation to me.

Deitrich Tennin

Seeing Cyclops using his beams to increase his agility was dope af

Eric Posin

I will assume that Wolverine didn’t go to the UN because he was really into let’s say… Baywatch Nights and just wanted to watch it in peace.

Rob Brown

Based on how each of these first two episodes went, I can totally understand why Cyclops wants to get the hell out of that place. Each week should end with someone ELSE showing up at the door and Scott just being like “NOPE. Fuck that.”

Geoffrey T. Blackwell

Something that would really piss off the MAGA types when they bring the X-Men into the MCU: make Magneto a survivor of the Rwandan genocide.

Matthew Lloyd

Couldn't Rogue and Gambit borrow the power dampening choker for an afternoon?

Ajax

Magneto, Xavier and Trask all have weird lips and that's the only thing I didn't like about this perfect premier!

Adam

Loved it but they probably should have recast everyone in my opinion. Rogue sounded more roadside diner waitress than southern belle and I was never a fan of the wolverine voice. I got to X-men nerd out so that was cool. Storm’s hair was direct foreshadowing to her losing her powers. Back to Mom’s basement till next week.

In the comics the way they swung Magneto's age leaned upon an earlier storyline where Magneto creates another villain called Alpha, who then de-ages Magneto until he's a baby (I think he also does this to Mastermind and some of the other Brotherhood of Evil Mutants). When Magneto is re-aged, the way Chris Claremont presented it was that he was re-aged younger and more vital. He kept his white hair as both a baby and a middle-aged guy later on. Incidentally, in the "trial of Magneto" comic storyline, this is how they mount a defense of Magneto which gets by the fact that he was a terrorist and held everyone hostage with nukes, arguing that the Magneto who did all of those crimes was no more, and that the re-aged Magneto was in effect a different person. And because it's comics, Magneto was defended by Gabrielle Haller, the concentration camp survivor Magneto and Charles Xavier rescued from Baron Strucker, who Professor X had an affair with while she was his patient recovering from trauma (yikes!). She earlier gave birth to Xavier's son, Legion. I never watched the original series of cartoons, so as someone who knew the X-men from the comics, there was a lot of cognitive dissonance. That began when they announced Henry Gyrich had killed Professor X. I kind of couldn't believe it? That's not quite the way the Gyrich of the comics would play it. He wasn't an out-and-out bigot, more of an officious, reactionary Defense Dept. guy. Also, I kept wondering if Morph turning into the other X-men meant we weren't going to see those X-men in future episodes. Thank you for a cool set of episodes! These are really fun to listen to, and they deepen my appreciation for the show.

Dude I always assumed they would have to go the full latex gimp suite route. Your way is much better
