“I’ll say it: Chris Kattan? Best part of this movie!” - Steve

On this week’s episode, we’re finally chatting about the “bad-ass” horror remake, House on Haunted Hill! Did any of those numerous deleted scenes maybe have more character details by any chance? Why couldn’t Jeffrey Combs have played a larger role in this movie? How does Geoffrey Rush look so much like Vincent Price in this and they refused to come out and say it— the guy’s named Price to boot, so c’mon! And did anybody else have the Mandela Effect bad memory that Kattan’s character got it in the first fifteen minutes? PLUS: Haunted houses need companionship too!

House on Haunted Hill stars Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher, Chris Kattan, Ali Larter, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Max Perlich, Lisa Loeb, James Marsters, Peter Graves, and Jeffrey Combs as Dr. Vannacutt; directed by William Malone.

My letterbox review was almost exactly Steve's intro lol. Except I said ghost houses. I like Steve's better 😂

Lar

Eee I’m so pumped for this. I actually unironically love this movie, it’s such a snapshot in horror eras.

Austin Nealon

Been looking forward to this one! This film was my choice for this year's Listener Request Month, so it's cool to see it tackled within the same year. One of my favorites to rewatch, watched it last night with the director's commentary in preparation for today's episode.

Nathan Lemire

"I feel like 13 Ghosts is the superior picture." -Steve Lol

profondo robbo

Great episode. Definitely appreciated the shout-out to Steve Albini. R.I.P.

Leesha Olivier

This and The Haunting were huge mistakes as remakes. Add Thirt3en Ghosts, too. I prefer the classics.

Les Whinen

"It would have to be" Eric

Kennieth Miles

I showed the Tingler Trailer to my oldest son. Every now and then he'll just blurt out look out ladies and gentlemen it's the Tingler!

MarkNM

I ran across a Tingler DEE VEE DEE and picked it up. Maybe I'll watch it and have my family tase me at appropriate moments.

MarkNM

Cabin with the VHSTG hat trick...I believe Champ Kind would call that a "WHAMMY!"

DMAC

How can any movie with Lisa Loeb be considered bad? I mean that's gotta be worth like a quarter star, right? Oh wait, it's Chris Kattan

Smaug

We can't get away from that Marilyn Manson cover the last 30 days here...sweet dreams are made of VHS tapes, viva la Jame Master. Also the Hulk coaster at Universal they use in the beginning of this movie rules, it's so fun

Matt

We need to know the status of these tapes?! Was the Sadjak family recovery mission successful?

Jason

Coming this Fall to Cenobite Hospital, The Good Doctor arrives to the dark halls of Chief of Staff Butterball’s facility to care for those with such pleasures to show.

Matt

I'm only hearing negative no, no, no

Dennis C

I saw this movie in theaters. A girl I really liked wanted to see it, so I suddenly wanted to see it too. I have zero memory of this film.

MarkNM

Steve wasn't openly weeping, so I assumed they were rescued.

Matt Reid

I wonder if the crew was getting the early Chris Kattan kill confused with the wrestling star Bill Goldberg movie; Santa's Slay. Opening scene; him and so other familiar faces, maybe James Caan too, get murdered by Santa. Best part of the movie.

G Goldhar

Jeffrey Coombs is WAY more in that sequel

Milan Davidek

Agreed. The plot is flawed of course but there were some scenes that were so well done, maybe ahead of their time even IMO.

Kevin Matthews

I have a soft spot for almost all of the original selection of titles delivered by Dark Castle, although they all tended to have problems when it came to endings (especially endings making too much use of CGI). Also, in case it hasn't been mentioned anywhere yet, factoid fans may enjoy knowing that "twisted nurse" is played by the same woman who was the magnificent Gozer in Ghostbusters.

Lar

As they said in the episode there were a few scenes that were good. But like all the weird remakes they did in this era it was trying too hard. But I saw it as a kid and I have nostalgia for it.

Deano Rezzz

Wait what? A spooktacular in May? It must be my birthday!

Todd B

I will admit up front - I have an odd soft spot for this garbage fire. Having said that - YES. The roller coaster fakeout always struck me as such a weird design choice. Like, somewhere there's an abandoned field riddled with smashed empty cars and the whole thing would turn out to be a giant money laundering scheme by Geoffrey Rush.

Darryl Bowen

I was working in a theater at the ticket counter when this came out. A guy with two toddlers came up wanting to watch it and I warned him that it might be to intense for the younguns. He yelled at me, how dare I tell him how to handle his kids and demanded tickets. 20 or so minutes later I hear screaming and crying and the guy and the kids are at the door demanding a refund yelling at my manager that anyone would sell him tickets to that when he had kids. She was there for the original encounter just gave him a refund and he tried to yell at my manager more but she just shut the door in his face and he dragged his kids off.

Mark D Myers

I didn't finish the episode yet so I don't know if was bought up but the 13th ghost remake, stay tuned?

The Great Wheel

I'm gonna be honest I would be willing to stay married to and continue to fuck Jeffrey Rush if he was like.. rich rich. As older husbands go he's not that bad.

John Hoopengarner

Yes this movie has problems but,it has always been a guilty pleasure type movie for me.Rush and Jansen just kill it in this movie!!!

Lindsey Slanker

Long overdue, loved it! I'd be stoked if y'all did 13 Ghosts!!

Autopsy of a Horror Movie

Hilarious that they didn’t do the spooktacular intro for this one lol they were really disgusted by this one

Craig

I love it when I hear a running gag being born and “big pile of shit!” is one (I hope).

Alex Klopfenstein

Did anyone else's version of this movie have the terribly tracked in post production product placement of the blockbuster video tapes on the control room guy's desk?

d'kota delGato

I saw this in the theater in Tupelo, MS in a double feature with The Insider. Drove up to Tupelo from MS State with my college girlfriend, we each chose one.

We Hate Movies

Yes! We forgot to bring that up. Just two shitty, CGI tapes sitting on that guy's desk. Like, did he bring his own VCR? Or was he saving them for after he got done working the party? It's all so stupid. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Dude, we encountered that so much at the multiplex back in the day. Total idiots, every single time! - Andrew

Ryan Blackburn

Surprised that no one has mentioned the Survivor type horror movie you were talking about - (my best Jupin intro voice) "Today on the program, 5 million dollars, 9 strangers in a house, an indeterminate number of days, 1 Survivor! It's House of 9 (2005) starring Dennis Hopper, Kelly Brook and Peter Capaldi." can be seen for free on Tubi or Amazon, fyi runtime 88 mins.

Robert Christian McKinney

Oh , we're talking about first album purchases? I remember walking to Pier Records to buy World Destruction -Afrika Bambaataa and Johnny Rotten. We weren't talking about that? Oh well, I did anyways.

Tim O'

Watched this at a Halloween party last night. This movie is dogshit. Will be re-listening with great interest.
