“Bruce Greenwood, who’s surprisingly not crooked in this movie? That blew my hair back!” - Steve

On this week’s episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza rolls into Will Smith City with a conversation all about the absolutely dreadful I, Robot! And to help dive into this dull-ass flick, the gang welcomes back to the show, friend and film critic, Angelica Jade Bastién! Why did they want to make this movie so damn serious and not let any comedy on the screen? Is Will Smith’s character listening to “Superstition” on loop every morning? Why couldn’t they pump a few more bucks into these digital effects? Was Bridget Moynihan’s direction just to play the character as if she was a secret robot? And why in the world weren’t Shia LaBeouf’s scenes cut for time? PLUS: Was the most expensive visual effect in this movie really digitally removing Will’s johnson from the shower scene?

I, Robot stars Will Smith, Bridget Moynihan, Bruce Greenwood, James Cromwell, Chi McBride, Adrian Ricard, Fiona Hogan, and Alan Tudyk as Sonny; directed by Alex Proyas.Be sure to pick up your tickets for our summer time WORLD WIDE DIGITAL EVENT where we’ll be talking all about the action classic SPEED! Captain Pike and Zephram Cochrane in one movie, wowee! Weirdly shitty film

Evan

For the record cheetah piss is a solid strain

Alex Murica

A truly baffling film. Why would you center your entire movie around CGI and then cheap out on it?

Andrew Dean

Demi Adejuyigbe does amazing Will Smith end credit raps for inappropriate films on Youtube. The “Get Out” one is a fave

Ray Kruger

Just watched the movie and am so excited to hear you guys rag on shia leboufs dialogue

Jeremy Garcia

White rhino is a legit strain and it is an indicia. Strong as fuck and awesome. I believe nowadays getting just straight up white rhino is probably difficult as it's most likely been crossed with other strains.

Paul

“Bland Runner” 😂

Nathan Lemire

There are so many new strain names because once u start hybridizing 6-12 different strains u need a new name because it would be a paragraph long. Cheers boys!

Nathan Lemire

Isn't Will Smiths character racist in Bright also? Any others?

Cobra_ss

Omg i thought i was going crazy with the ott converse in this that noone else somehow noticed. Nice to be validated so many years later

MikeyMiniMoto

Will Smith’s character should have been played by a 55+ year old actor to hammer home the Technophobia. Peter Boyle as Del Spooner? Better movie.

MarkNM

If this wasn't specifically on the I, Robot board, I'd have to ask you to narrow it down.

MarkNM

About to listen, and I'm oddly excited to see how y'all spiced up a discussion about the powdered milk of Hollywood blockbusters. WHM has covered worse, but rarely as bland.

MarkNM

My (redacted) accidentally made a hybrid and came up with a 4-word name and I was like, uhhhh, clever but cumbersome.

Chris

Asking “Why in the world weren’t Shia LaBeouf’s scenes cut for time?” and then cutting him from the cast list is a great bit

We Hate Movies

lol whoops! Total freudian slip there, Chris! - Andrew

Clever Girl

"Titty Grazer" is definitely a Bond Girl or a new detective series on Acorn.

Clever Girl

Wasn't Will Smith also a racist cop in Bright or whatever that netflix thing was?

Amanda P

Love that we have Angelica back. For her next episode - Fear with Marky Mark?

Will H.

re: "allergic to BS" line I was 13 when this came out and my school was FULL of people repeating that line.

Frank Grimes

Love whenever Angelica is on. Great episode!

Lar

If I had a nickel for every time a will smith movie featured a woman being forced to take a cat against her will, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice.

Milan Davidek

🎵”I robot, doing the thing. I robot, getting the thing…”

Odie Coyote

Asimov's first robot book Caves of Steel is all about whether or not a woman can marry a robot, or are they just sex toys, as most people in the book see it. They're pretty explicit, going down to describing android ass hair, so it's ironic this movie is so chaste

Tala Hobballah

Lighting up a joint of That Badu for Angelica! Top 3 guests of all time. <3

there's still time to delete this comment

MarkNM

"Joe" with robots? One ticket please.

Adam Lewis

Release date scheduling, I speculate.

Andrew Dean

“The reason people use a crucifix against vampires is because vampires are allergic to bullshit.” - Richard Pryor

Busiris

Learned through watching the movie that WETA did the digital effects and I was baffled. If I had to guess, they were neck deep in LotR post-production so this movie was, I dunno, their B or C team working against the clock.

jribs

Yes! Bright was the inaugural Patreon WHM episode!

Patrick Hayden

Will Smith end credits rap for Get Out

Ryan Keyport

Was andrew really defending will smiths rap career? He sold a ton of records because he's will fucking smith not cuz hes a good rapper 😂😂. However...I agree with steve...I definitely want a will smith song for every will smith movie. The "pursuit of happiness" rap would've been really something

Shanda P.

My absolute favorite guest!! You guys go together like peanut butter and jelly 🥰

Smaug

For insight into these stupid-ass weed names, consult the documentary Pineapple Express and Gary Cole. I think LaBeef is pretty good in Fury, he plays a compelling version of many 19 year olds I saw dealing with being in the military and combat.

HockeenightsCT

The movie not addressing that Lake Michigan just dried up is fucking mind blowing to me. It’s the source of Chicago and most of the suburban area’s drinking water!

Deano Rezzz

“I did not murder him!” - Said no robot ever.

Todd B

Update on the 'What the Hell happened?' that is Alex Proyas's career - seems that string of thuds caught up with him. He's still making movies. Except now he's getting them crowdfunded through IndieGoGo

Daryl Williams

Best Shia Labouf movie IMO is "Lawless" with Tom Hardy playing his older bootlegging brother.

Paul Heidtman

I realize you guys can't have a guest every single time one of you can't do the show, but I'd be totally fine with Anjelica being a permanent stand-in or if she was just the fifth member of the gang. She's gotta be my favorite WHM guest. She's just fucking hilarious. Another great show, guys. I ALWAYS hated this movie.

Kelly Burns

I was just about to bring this up! I typically don’t like to bring up Son of a Director ™️ but if I had a nickel for every time Will Smith played a cop that was racist against an “other” / “creature” that was an obvious stand in for black people I’d have two nickels… which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

Emily B

Love every episode Angelica is on! She's hilarious and has a lot of interesting commentary from a different perspective than the guys. Never saw this movie myself, but I was always under the impression it was a ~prestige film (as someone who was 12 when it came out) ... guess they had good marketing lol

Vicky I

I've unintentionally seen this movie a dozen times and every time I forget that I have the same name as the big evil robot AI

Tim O'

Always love to hear from Angelica and she's in top form here. Great episode.

Craig

Shame. I loved Dark City. Went in cold to the theatre and all I knew was Rufus Sewell woke up with no memory next to a dead girl. So I was quite surprised where it went!

Craig

Chiming to say there is a legit great (non rap) I, Robot song called One Robot by Australian band Rocket Science. Proyas used to direct music videos in Australia so I’m surprised he didn’t use it.

Jacob Curry

Happy to report that Tom Brady was indeed at the premiere of I, Robot
