“You don’t know why anyone is on this boat!” - Steve, on the bad script

On this week’s show, the guys welcome back their good bud, and official WHM Disaster Movie Expert™️, Justin J. Case to chat about the grimmer-than-average disaster flick, Poseidon! How brutal are all these kills? Is there any other movie that’s this aggressively 2006? Couldn’t they have tried to make any of these characters three-dimensional? And credit where credit’s due, the sequence of the boat tipping over is exquisite! PLUS: Turns out installing elevators in Mortal Kombat’s Outworld is pretty involved!

Poseidon stars Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Jacinda Barrett, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum, Mía Maestro, Mike Vogel, Kevin Dillon, Freddy Rodríguez, Jimmy Bennett, Andre Brauer, and Fergie as Gloria; directed by Wolfgang Peterson. We hope you are enjoying Ad-Free WHM! Who saw this in theaters like I did?

Ray

Watching it right now and I think it's giving me claustrophobia. I had to go outside during the vent scenes. Also why are their so many bombs on this cruise ship?

Robert Flaxman

Josh Lucas is actually the lead character in Stealth which, not for nothing, is definitely a large part of why that movie does not work AT ALL

Smaug

Oh I quite enjoy this movie, it's feels like a nice throwback to mid-tier 90s action movies, unconvincing dialogue and dumb characters and all. With a convincing drowning of Kurt Russell to boot

MarkNM

Great ep. I think I'm going to show this to my kid who loved Titanic, just to nail down what he actually loved about that movie. I suspect it may be art-related. Great job by Justin, WHM's fifth Beatle.

Busiris

I'm glad that it's brought up that this wave comes without any explanation. Coincidentally, I watched the absolutely awful Asylum movie Titanic II last week (seriously, do not bother watching) and they have a tsunami and they actually do explain why it formed. Inexplicably Titanic II was more concerned with exposition and this big budget disaster movie was not, lmao.

Frank Grimes

I cannot wait for nightmare 4...it might be my personal fave. Has a killer intro song and some nice nightmares and action scenes.

Deano Rezzz

Ahh the dark year of 2006. When Hollywood still tried to shove Josh Lucas as a leading man down our necks.

Eren Keskin

I remember my dad letting out a huge belly laugh when the elevator shaft scene scared me

Jamie

That Celine Dion biopic Aline kinda does that Philip Baker Hall thing, putting a middle aged actress' head on a teenager.

Mark D Myers

And seven years later the animated mad show on cartoon network would parody it well past the point when anyone whould remember it.

Jonathan

Troy is a great movie if your a bi teen in the early 2000. This is deff Wolf's worst movie.

Z

It's fitting that Richard Dreyfuss is in this because he is the undisputed king of movies that were at least somewhat on the cultural radar upon their initial release, but no longer exist today. Poseidon, Mr. Holland's Opus, Whose Life Is It Anyway?, the Stakeout franchise, Silent Fall, Nuts, Moon Over Parador...if it weren't for Letterboxd and the like, we'd be at a loss.

Craig

Hollywood must surely be desperate enough to adapt that by now?

Craig

I never understood how he could see so well underwater without goggles during that sequence.

MikeyMiniMoto

“Every single episode we do will be the 4th entry in some sort of horror franchise” Nothing guarantees a roster of bad movies quite like that.

Infinite Terror

Are you degens besmirching the good name of my beloved Schumacher Phantom????

Rose Esposito

16-year-old 2004 me is outraged by their disrespect for this unironically incredible motion picture; 36yo me can't wait for the hilarity 🥳

Tim O'

The day may come when I stop laughing at the "stuck in the dryer" jokes, but today is not that day.

MarkNM

Richard Dreyfus was a VHS God.

Arthur martinez

I love this movie. But I also love the original

Shylina

Jacinda Barrett was also a cast member of the Real World London season (I believe it was 4). It was the most BORING season of the 12 I watched (I finally stopped at 11).

We Hate Movies

Oh wow, that's super-weird. London was way early on! - Andrew

Smaug

My god, I never even thought about goggles. That never makes sense in movies, everyone can see like fish

Emily Thompson

Phantom of the Opera movie stans aren't gonna like you not putting respect on Emmy Rossum's name 😬

Aaron Dowler

Listening to this the night Eric Adams got indicted, wooo!

profondo robbo

As long as we're talking about Josh Lucas movies, I'm going to throw out a nod to Session 9. That's a good one.

Matthew Kennedy

Spooktacular?!? 4, four, four, 4, four, 4!

Emil Svensson

I guess if we had Spooktwocular, this would be Spookfourcular?

Dan sulin

Excited about the Spooktacular Four announcement! Does that mean we are getting an episode of our favorite little green fictional monster in SPAAAACE?!

Tristan

I wanted a Kevin Dillon redemption death. I would be in tears for Drama. This movie is a spiritual successor to entourage.

Wil Brown

Why do I pay money for you to advertise your fucking shows? An advertisment is an advertisment. It doesn't matter if its Coke or your shows. What am I paying for?

Rose Esposito

I took a classics course in fall 2006 in college, and the professor could NOT stop complaining about how that movie got the Iliad so totally wrong. I found it v amusing.

We Hate Movies

We used to cut them out and people complained that they never heard we were going to be in their town and missed us. There are no paid advertisements on the Patreon feed. We have to tell people what we are doing. That is not us promoting an advertiser.

Infinite Terror

You need to fuck all the way off, jabroni.

Matt

Hang up on him!

zancakes

I can't believe no one is commenting on how Justin sounds, speaks, and jokes exactly like Eric. I'm convinced this is a long con.

John Beckmann

I watched this movie with my dad as a kid when I was about 10, and when he explained that it was a remake, it was the first time I understood what that actually meant, and I got so irrationally angry at the concept.

Matzar

This is one of my favorite episodes.
