“This is gooning for people who like nice stuff.” - Chris

On this week’s holiday episode, we’re chatting about the Christmas snooze, The Holiday! Is this considered a Christmas classic? Why couldn’t we just have one of these storylines instead of both of them vying for movie supremacy? How little romantic chemistry do Kate Winslet and Jack Black have with one another? Besides The Talented Mr. Ripley, has Jude Law been any more handsome than this movie? Why did Nancy Meyers put so little detail and conflict in this screenplay? How humiliating is it when they make Kate Winslet do all that Jack Black-style scatting? PLUS: The guys wish to party with the great Hans Zimmer after one of his big-ass rock concerts!

The Holiday stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Edward Burns, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Bill Macy, Shelley Berman, Kathryn Hahn, John Krasinski, and Eli Wallach as Arthur; directed by Nancy Meyers. We hope you are enjoying Ad-Free WHM! Christmas gooning? I'm up for anything once.

Jan

The holiday is the Die Hard of xmas and i will never see it

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Having Fargo Sex

This is perfect movie to goon to if you love the baller houses and apartments your average Nancy Myers character lives in, shot to perfection by *checks notes* Dean Cundey!

David

Saw this movie with my wife on our very first date. And even with that personal connection - this movie sucks sweaty balls

JK

I just had the classic WHM "the movie's gotta be almost over...oh wait there's still 50 minutes to go???"

Geoff Gershon

I have been to Hans Zimmer Live, it's awesome! Back in 2017, he did a medley of the Man of Steel theme which lead into the Wonder Woman theme.....and this was the Summer of Wonder Woman, the crowd went nuts no joke. :)

Busiris

Definitely one of the worst rom-coms (if you could even call it that) done for the show. It might've looked good but I wouldn't know it, thanks to Amazon. Not sure if anyone else had this issue but their copy is the lowest resolution I've ever seen from their service. I loved hearing the tidbit on the episode about Eric Roberts in the Mr. Brightside video. He also appears in the music video for Mariah Carey's song, We Belong Together. Someone tweeted the video a year or so ago and I saw it. She leaves Eric Roberts at the alter to be with... Wentworth Miller. Fascinating stuff.

Deano Rezzz

WHM foreign correspondent- UK edition over here - “Knackered” means tired, “buggered” means fucked but more specifically involving the butt.

Odin Blaine

While this movie was way too long and sappy (it is Nancy Meyers after all) I still found it charming. Jude Law with glasses omg😍 could you BE more handsome?!

Z

This was such a slog to get through...you cannot have a movie like this be such low stakes at 135 minutes long, you just can't.

Tony King

Was just coming to comment this 😂

Gino Volpe

My company is responsible for Miller's by Marriage and soon to be released, Finnegan's Foursome. Poor man's Woody Allen is putting it lightly. Finnegan's is a golf "dramedy" in Ireland. Stay tuned folks.

FIRST EDITION OF THE ILIAD!!!!!!!!! i thought i was alone, i think about that SO OFTEN.

MarkNM

Is there a "RomComs for Hacks" writing course that specifically instructs aspiring scribes to make their characters ambiguously rich, to eliminate the need to realistically portray day to day life, and enabling characters to make insanely expensive last minute decisions?

Clever Girl

Everything about this commentary is reminding me how hot Jude Law is, and now I gotta watch The Holiday. Wait. Did those of us who actually enjoy this movie just wanna watch Jude Law be handsome and charming? Did we EVER care about the story or the other charicatures? 😦

Clever Girl

I think Nancy Meyers posted a video this week of herself with Jude Law doing Mr. Napkin Head, hinting at a possible the Holiday 2. Stay Tuned.

Matt

My favorite scene is when Eli Wallach makes a bad joke at his awards ceremony and Jack Black disowns him instantly. Really awkward third act twist.

Joey T

Is that the only thing that sucked sweaty balls that night?

Daryl Williams

I wish Eddy Burns character hooked up with Jack Black's girlfriend and later showed up in the video store and sack tapped Dustin Hoffman while Jack Black just took it all in.

We Hate Movies

Hell yeah. We’re gonna need a glossary soon! - Andrew

Chris Dobson

Saw this for the first time this holiday, my GF finds Jack Black "charming" in this: you short, annoying podcasters stay away from her!

Dennis Stack

Steve going all British with the accent and specific verbiage is probably one of my favorite things about this show. Him saying, "we're being cheeky on telly!" from the Love Actually episode lives rent free in my head and I think "circumcised tallywacker" is its new roommate

DMAC

This movie is no Love Actually, I'll give it that.

David

Well played 👏

Tim O'

Even in the movie Contagion, when Kate Winslet dies of Mega-Covid and gets thrown in a mass grave, they canNOT make her look frumpy or unattractive.

Mark D Myers

Just got to say what bad Alfredo are you eating to fart so much? That never happens to me.

James

Since Hans Zimmer did the music for this movie, I wonder if he ever performs the score for this movie during his live concerts.

Paul

Saw Hans Zimmer in concert in the Bay Area. You need to see his concert. It’s all over YouTube.

Emil Svensson

I appreciated your erectory joke, Eric!

Emil Svensson

I feel like this is a common thing among American people, where they describe getting explosive diarrhea after going to chain restaurant X, Y, or Z. What's up with these places, or maybe with these people? Now granted, I've never experienced gastrointestinal mishaps even when long-term traveling on the cheap in quote unquote "developing countries", so it could be that it's more common to get the shits after going to Chili's or Taco Bell in the population at large than my iron gut lets me realise.

Rose Esposito

As soon as Steve said "my favorite one of those is..." I knew what he was gonna say. I love that detail so much. This is also the movie that brought us a bad guy saying "I will never...ever...gonna let you go." Stay tuned, maybe????

Jason

Mario Batali was the master of Fartfredo. You could tell just by looking at him.

Charlie

As a London resident, Steve is dead on. Ain’t no way that commute is under 80mins.

Matthew Lloyd

I like to think at that Hanukkah party the old guys all sit around bragging about who they got blacklisted.

Hard To Gwil

I proudly watched this at 2x speed

Ethan Sturgill

Maybe it’s just because I recently went through a breakup eerily similar to Jack Black’s, but despite the interminable length I found myself charmed by the Winslet stuff at least. And I went in fully expecting to hate it

AlsoNamedB0rt

Mr. Napkin Head is a clutch last minute Halloween costume. True Jude Dudes know.

AlsoNamedB0rt

It’s a way for New Yorkers to show they are cooler than everyone else. I mean, they pay $4K a month to live in a walk in closet above a bowling alley and below another bowling alley. They need these little badges.

AlsoNamedB0rt

Yes. It’s part wish fulfillment, part architecture porn, and part nobody wants to watch a movie where the characters worry about money. I get it. People enjoy things for different reasons. Not everyone should end up a ranting lunatic like Chris Cabin.

AlsoNamedB0rt

Boy Next Door is a definite stay tuned.

Smaug

Steve relating the 1st ed of The Iliad is one of the funniest things I've ever heard on WHM. I was making a salad and was guffawing in the kitchen

April

I know it’s terrible but I love this stupid movie. I do indeed watch it almost every Christmas. I love Cameron Diaz’s sweaters, and I cry when she cries.

Smaug

The Jack and Kate stuff in this movie is cute, it's just unfortunately not the focus of the movie

Matt

This and Love Actually are both awful awful movies that I watch at least once every single December.

Drew Stewart

My wife watches this movie once a year. It’s one of her very few comfort films!

Amanda P

We saw Hans Zimmer in Oakland, CA this year. ROCKED the roof off the stadium. We didn’t get to do coke with him, though.

Dawn Elicia

I’m going to disagree I like the chemistry between Jack Black and Kate Winslet. I would rather watch their movie. The Cameron Diaz and Jude Law part bores me so I tune out.

MavenCree

Literally the only movie ive found Jack Black hot in. I wouldve chosen his character over Jude Law's any day. Its all in how he presents himself. Hes not running around unkempt like an overgrown child.
