“The answer to almost all questions we’re gonna ask here is: it’s Florida” - Chris, on the Ernest-related insanity in this movie

On this special Christmas Eve episode, we’re chatting about the silly Christmas cult fave, Ernest Saves Christmas! Why did this old Santa wait so long to give up his Santa power? What’s with Ernest hiding that “Keep the CHRIST in Christmas” bumper sticker in his glove box? Should Ernest even have a driver’s license? Is Santa sad over the fact his home country of Prussia dissolved in the late 1940s? And should this teen girl really be sleeping over at Ernest’s bungalow? PLUS: Ernest criticizes the Jedi’s bad human trafficking habits!

Ernest Saves Christmas stars Jim Varney, Oliver Clark, Noelle Parker, Gailard Sartain, Billie Bird, Bill Byrge, Robert Lesser, and Douglas Seale as Santa; directed by John Cherry.

I watched this and Prison a lot as a kid. A few years ago I watched all the Ernest movies including the Dr Otto movie. Slam dunk might be the worst one of all of them. If they took out Ernest it might be a way better movie, but at least it has the magic shoes that make noises like the possessed hand in Evil Dead 2.

Tony King

I was amazed at how much of this movie I remembered, considering the last time I watched it was around 30 years ago. It is terrible but I do have a certain soft spot for it, having watched it so much as a kid.

Odin Blaine

Just watched this to better enhance this episode so I could follow along. Probably won’t watch another Ernest…although I’m morbidly curious about Ernest Goes to Africa🫥

Busiris

Kind of great to see you guys return to Ernest after Scared Stupid in 2016 (episode 270! Literally over 500 episodes between them). Listened to most of the episode so far and it's a hoot. I'll hope that you guys someday touch upon Ernest Goes to Jail. I'm not proud to admit I've seen every Ernest thing. Every episode of his show, every special, every movie. I had a manic, insane period early in lockdown when I absorbed a TON of that stuff. I know more trivia about these movies and all the regular actors that show up in them than I care to admit publicly.

Chris Tobias

It's okay to like a christmas! Also you should check out Jim's biography; The Importance of Being Ernest. It's a good read.

Dan Craftwerk

Dude he looks incredible on that cover. *stuff Verne doesn't even know!

Frank Grimes

loved this flick growing up. I think i only saw Goes to Jail, Scared Stupid, Saves Christmas...had no idea he made more of them in the late 90's, like going to africa

J.J.

@AndrewJupin, the gang glossed over it but your “Gary Bird” joke got an honest-to-goodness laugh out of me, so fucking funny!!! Thanks for all the funny. Happy Holidays. :)

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's appearance in Slam Dunk Ernest as the Archangel of Basketball may be the most phoned-in performance I've seen from a professional athlete in a movie. It's almost impressive how much he doesn't give a shit there

Dennis Stack

Can't believe that the guys clocked Marty the scumbag agent as the mayor from The Relic and not Mr. "Make Fists with Your Toes" from Die Hard

Ernest was 100% always "just asking questions" - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Thank you, J.J.! At least you've got some taste in good humor! Happy Holidays! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Busiris, it kinda sounds like you're gearing up for an Ernest tattoo! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I just watched Slam Dunk Ernest for the first time the other night and dear god... - Andrew

Tony King

That's where I recognised him from! Thank you!

Busiris

As if I don't already have enough regrets in my life, lmao.

Scott Plackemeier

Ernest in drag did "wrong kid died" 20 years before Dewey Cox!

Jonnie Sea

Damnit…now I have to be “that guy” First Date… She had red hair… Restaurant… Sigh… Foot Job under the table… In fairness we had to wait for the table and enjoyed the bar for some time… Flipside, we had never met each other previously

Dawn Elicia

My favorite Ernest is Ernst Goes to Camp

I.C. Weiner

Steve's story about his dad driving recklessly after seeing this reads as heart warming to me. Whenever I go see a movie with my 5 year old, I always track what he thinks was the funniest and 9/10 times try to emulate it in order to bond with him/get him to love me.

I.C. Weiner

Why is that a sigh? If that happened to me that's how I would introduce myself

I.C. Weiner

Can you confirm the soda ring thing (haven't seen the movie itself, so, sorry for being vague) was a reference to the show?

Tristan

New WHM episode he, he, he. I would love an episode where you guys do the Ernest laugh 10 times. I love that laugh, any small victory, he, he he.

Busiris

I'm ashamed to admit I may need to re-listen because I don't remember the soda ring thing, haha. Nothing about that I can recall being relevant to any past Ernest property though.

Craig

The name’s Sea, Jonnie Footjob-under-the-table Sea.

Craig

In Australia in the 80s and 90s we had the strange phenomenon of US and UK TV shows getting movie spin offs and the movies being released in Australia despite the TV shows never airing here. I remember seeing an ad for this on TV and being completely baffled by who Ernest was.

Jonnie Sea

Just weary of sounding like “that guy” but I suppose if the SHOE fits… You see what I did there…

Gerald

I watched this with my kids and they were NOT having it. They kept asking why the camera was always so close to his face AND why he always looked so sweaty 🤣🤣

JK

"So Ernest is asshole-ing around" Steve made me spit out coffee in my car

Zora McBride

Only one of these I ever saw was the movie with the basketball shoes on the way home from boarding school some random Friday. So i'll be happy to check out one of, the good ones!

Ed Harris

Only saw the summer camp one but the local commercial fan in me enjoys the hell out of the ads.

RJ Cunningham

Cabin the fucking King of The Relic references

Ray

There actually is a movie called Christmas Slay from 2015 and it seems like it's terrible.
