On this month's patron-curated episode of Animation Damnation, we're talking about what many consider to be the worst episode of the show Daria, which means it's still a pretty great episode of animated entertainment!

Originally airing March 10, 1999, "Depth Takes a Holiday" finds Daria having to deal with the human forms of various holidays—what were theeeeeeey smoking?! When Halloween, X-Mas and Guy Fawkes Day leave Holiday Island and wind up in Lawndale, Daria partners with Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day to convince them to go back home. Pretty zany, but still filled with that great writing and voice acting Daria was known for. What is doesn't have, are all the great tunes that were peppered throughout every episode of this show when it originally aired. Damn those Paramount cheapskates!

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting Animation Damnation on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going! We know you have a number of choices for pods and we appreciate you spending some time with us!Original cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

Wow, no 90210 spoiler warning from Steve at ALL about David Silver graduating 😒

Cat Coleman

I have bootleg DVDs of Daria specifically for the music!

This was my request so thanks once again for picking it! I rewatched the episode on its own in preparation for this and I think that makes it play better than if it's watched after other episodes - maybe that's why it has such a pointedly negative reputation in a show that is otherwise considered pretty solid (it even predates the arrival of Tom, the show's most hated character). Side-note: nice work doing accurate Elon impressions instead of just making him sound like Goldmember. Being reminded of just how dopey he sounds really makes the jokes sing.

NFlux Forever

Throughout its original run and while revisiting it in recent years, Daria (the character) never read to me as queer. Jane on the other hand... Also, even though the language around it didn't really exist yet, Quinn reads as asexual to me.

profondo robbo

There was a subplot in one of the TV movies where a woman hits on Jane and Jane explicitly states she's not gay, though this could also be read as a means of rejecting some particularly aggressive advances.

NFlux Forever

I remember and I'm still salty over it. I want to say that it was a standards and practices thing for why they couldn't pull the trigger on having Jane be into girls.

Washington anx Lincoln used to have 2 separate holidays back in the day

Busiris

Genuinely thought about mentioning to you guys and joking about "Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue" being a fake sequel to 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag but never did, so I'm glad Steve could take that shot in this episode.

Yep, I remember that from when I was a kid. I think about the time MLK day became a thing they decided we had two many holidays and combined Washington and Lincoln's B-days. Homer even laments this is an early Season Simpsons ep. 'Pffft, Presidents Day. What a rip off!'

So is Andrew's ejaculation inducing Shepherd's pie gonna become a new reward available at a $15 dollar Patreon tier, or...

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Having Fargo Sex

I am glad I am not alone in my hatred for Tom, the guy was such a drip. I mean Daria was too good for Trent, but she had to settle for Tom, fucking Tom?

RJ Cunningham

The sleazy website I watched this on had the pop-music. And my did it rule Anyone remember the musical/singing episode being a huge deal?

Kureigu

I always found this episode out of place with the tone of daria but as an adult I suddenly see the satire they were trying to achieve on holiday specials.

RJ Cunningham

I’ll finish Eric’s sentence, that I’m in complete agreement with. “…die.”

24:02 about Musk: “He needs to [REDACTED AUDIO]”. Don’t know if that is an intentional editing gag, but that is hysterical

Can I request Beavis and Butthead

Darryl Bowen

I watched Oz for the first time little over a year ago and "enjoyed" it. Funny some time into the series I joking told my gf there needs to be a musical episode ala Buffy and then a few eps later there was a musical ep.

Shariq

I read Quinn as being addicted to attention, but still straight. There was an ep where they went into the future and Quinn is a stay at home mom with a lot of kids. That made me laugh because she would have all the attention she could handle and then some

Brendan 'Timbzy' Timbs

Back in the mid 2000s, I downloaded VHS rips of all 5 seasons of Daria with the original music. I still choose to watch those over the HD quality without the OG tunes. Someone did do a pretty good job around 2010 at inputting the original audio over the top of the DVD video but not for all episodes.

Jason

I think it's not Gordon Ramsay sampling Andrew's Shepard's Pie. It's Guy Fieri rolling up, eating with his hands, shooting immediately in his trousers, and then saying: "That's what I call Donkey Sauce!"

Shawn

lol my neighborhood is full of “c*m trees.” It does not smell good around here for a few days to a week then goes away.

Mark D Myers

I really don't get the big deal about the music being different.

We Hate Movies

Because you're losing great and nostalgic pop music in favor of fake trash studio music, and also, lots of the music cues are linked to jokes in the actual show, so when you're watching these syndicate episodes without the original music, it's a big deal to lose the full intention of the writers. - Andrew

Unicorn Trista

Allegedly some rips of it playing from tv fell off the back of a truck and onto one of my old laptops, hearing the original music really does make a difference!
