On our first syncable commentary track of 2025, we’re chatting over David Fincher’s not-talked-about-enough thriller, The Game! How eerie is Michael Douglas’s creepy clown puppet? How amazing was James Rebhorn in everything, including this? Is this birthday present one of the biggest wastes of money in birthday present history? And wow, do you think the creators of Succession saw the opening of this movie?

The Game stars Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger, James Rebhorn, Peter Donat, Carroll Baker, Anna Katarina, Charles Martinet, Elizabeth Dennehy, and Armin Mueller-Stahl as Anson Baer; directed by David Fincher.

If you’re looking to sync the film with us, we’re watching the Criterion Collection blu-ray, and we have the film set to start at time code 00:00:15, so 15 seconds into the disc, which means the Criterion Collection logo has passed and you can just start to see the orange line of light start to appear from the Universal Pictures logo. If you're not watching the Criterion disc, just listen for further instructions at the start of this track.

This audio begins to sync with the film at time code 00:03:33, so three minutes and 33 seconds from the start of this track.

Thanks for being the kick-ass Patreon subscriber that you are! We know you have a lot of options when you're watching stuff, and we're stoked you decided to sync up with us for this movie!

Hmm time to start walking around work like my stomach hurts, once everyone’s convinced I’m fucking outta here to Gamentary it up

Watch_N_Rewatch

Fincher & WHM together ?? What is this my search history?! Lol cannot wait to listen and rewatch Cheers 🍻

RJ Cunningham

I’m down for a Cheers rewatch as well

Watch_N_Rewatch

Good call, I started Cheers during the Pandemic for the first time and it was good. There's something about a bunch of adults drinking that's just more entertaining then watching the Paul brothers Max series ... Kill me dead.

Yes yes and more yes! These -mentaries are one of my absolute favorite things you guys do--it really is like watching a movie together with your (para) compadres. Also great choice--i tried to watch this five or ten years ago because you guys would talk about it a lot and didn't quite get it--but revisited it earlier this week in preparation for the commentary, and of course it's excellent. Time to roll a blunt and have a great morning! Love you guys so much, stay safe out there, good luck in Oxford, and don't forget to wear the blue!

Mike Kling

James Rebhorn was underrated AF.

RJ Cunningham

“It reminds me of my friend Luigi.” Fuck yes

Busiris

I am so looking forward to listening/watching this evening. Easily one of my favorite Fincher movies. First saw it around the mid-aughts and I never heard ANYONE talk about it. Was the most twisty-turny movie I had watched at that time and I had no clue how it would end, which is such a fun experience.

Duelpro

Didn’t know this movie existed until yall announced it as an upcoming commentary. Watched it yesterday and it fucked me up. Loved it. Got the criterion collection for it.

Jason

Which of the WHM guys, if you pulled The Game prank on then, just stay in Mexico and ride it out?

MarkNM

Had i been the fifth wheel on this commentary... ...honestly, yall probably would have kicked me out after my 8th Total Recall joke. They just kept popping in there.

Voror

This is on a list of movies I keep meaning to watch but have never gotten around to

jribs

As an avid not rich racquetball player, pickleball is for babies

Uncertaincurtaincall

Honestly I do pajama pants under suit pants instead of underwear for work or jeans for daily life. But it is amazing and life changing.

Rod

A pegging joke in the first minute? I’m gonna love this.

Tim O'

I was thinking about Fincher and Michael Douglas and now I just keep imagining Douglas's voice saying "xenomorphs"

Ray

Ooo gay man terry? I love that guy. Oh wait.. it's a what now? Oh ...

J HEASLEY

What is the purpose of this movie?

Elliott Tipton

Had trouble with this one. Couldn't decide which part to pay attention too, the movie or the comments.

Kemper

Had a helluva time getting this one synced up because when you start the movie my bluray had the Universal logo, but then they stuck in several 'tips' about using the features, and only then starts the movie with a whole new time code. Incredibly irritating. But the commentary is hilarious!

kl

No, guys. Seriously. They figured it all out during the testing. They knew where he would jump off the building, and that he would shoot Sean Penn. Wouldn't you? It all makes sense.

profondo robbo

The Armin Mueller-Stahl impressions are such a high point that I'm scouring his credits for anything that could be a future episode. Also, my favourite that-guy that I noticed this time around was the first hotel manager being played by Yuji Okumoto aka Chozen from Karate Kid 2.

Felipe Sobreiro

The woman that plays Michael Douglas' secretary is indeed from TNG but she's not Captain Garrett, she plays Shelby in the two episodes when Picard turns into Locutus! She's also Brian Dennehy's daughter (!)

Felipe Sobreiro

SIGH of course I reply mid-listening and Andrew himself found out that same info like two minutes later

Jonathan Kimsey

I'm not one for pajamas either, but if you want that "rich a**hole Michael Douglas in The Game" pajamas, try Lunya. 😂

Frank Grimes

My dad looks like Michael Douglas. In particular Grady in Wonder Boys.

Chris Knutson

Still no breathable pajama links? I need some as well

Cody Downs

Respectfully disagree with you all, gentlemen: I am honored when someone sings, "Happy Birthday!" to me at a restaurant. Shows those who did so care. But, to each their own... 😉
