“He dresses like an Old West gigolo…” - Eric on Mick Dundee

On this week’s episode, the Totally Cool Awesome 80s jag of the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza is covering the second highest-grossing film of 1986, the croc-out-of-water comedy, Crocodile Dundee! Why does the movie take so long to get to New York City? What in the hell were they thinking with the multiple crotch grab “gags”? Who packs a sexy bathing suit for a hike through the bush? Does the script confirm that Mick has magic powers? Wouldn't someone try to kill Mick after he wastes all that coke at the party? And what in the WORLD are we doing being barefoot in the subway at the end?! PLUS: Be on the lookout for the American Crocodile Dundee, Alligator Johnson!

Crocodile Dundee stars Paul Hogan, Linda Kozlowski, John Mellon, David Gulpilil, Steve Rackman, Mark Blum, Michael Lombard, and Reginald VelJohnson as Gus; directed by Peter Faiman.

That’s not a podcast. THIS is a podcast!

David

Our little podcast that focuses usually on mostly forgotten Australian films covered “Crocodile” Dundee II on a previous episode – a pretty wild sequel from that golden age where films of all genres HAD to feature sub plots featuring evil drug dealers. Hope I’m not stretching the friendship by linking here (please delete if I am)... https://www.buzzsprout.com/1963556/episodes/11891447

Darryl Bowen

What was the name of the Australian biker documentary that was previously talked about?

Nicholas Knecht

The part at the end where he's walking on peoples heads is burned into my brain.

WarOfTheBees

40 years and I only JUST NOW find out his name isn't actually "Crocodile."

Z

It's so funny (and insane) there was a 13-year gap between II and the third one where he goes to L.A. I think they made the third one to capitalize on the success of Steve Irwin and hoped audiences would see the link between the two.

johnny stocker

Oh yeah, this one was a VHS staple in my house. I knew Reggie Vel J from this long before I knew him from Die Hard or anything else.

Calvin Lindfors

If y'all are looking for a good Australian horror movie, check out Lake Mungo. Be prepared though, it's like 2/3 drama and 1/3 horror and depressing as all fuck.

MarkNM

Dundee 2 was practically a bad Cannon movie reworked to fit in Mick Dundee. I don't remember any jokes from the movie at all, just the drug dealers and a lot of shooting. Like Beverly Hills Cop 2, but bad bad.

Nicholas Knecht

I remember the aboriginal eating the bat and saying it needed garlic, the sincerity in his voice made me laugh. That guy was enjoying his bat otherwise.

Les Whinen

The second one isnt the mafia. Its even better...Mexican drug cartel. The fish out of water is the cartel in the outback

Calvin Lindfors

also correction, the director only produced Fern Gully

James C Harris

Before Crocodile Dundee, Paul Hogan had a Benny Hill-esque show that used to be on WWOR, usually shown after Benny Hill or used as rain delay fir Mets games

Craig

Exposed: The Ghost Train Fire. It’s on Netflix

Craig

Been too long since Andrew brought out the Don Draper pitch impression. It was one of these (Hellraiser puzzle box) that originally sold me on the podcast.

Craig

All I remember is, after narrowly avoiding death at the hands of the cartel, Linda says “I wouldn’t have missed it for the world” … which was a baffling line.

Barista Bran

The only Hogan movie I watched as a kid was Flipper. The only thing I can remember is Elijah Wood, dolphins, hammerhead sharks, and spaghetti-o's.

Scott Plackemeier

NGL Dutch is a recommend for me and a good Thanksgiving movie. How bout Planes Trains and Automobiles for WLM this November and Dutch on the main feed?

We Hate Movies

Ah, yes, credit where credit's due to... Bill Kroyer! - Andrew

Hobbes Roy

I want a “Sheila: The Gloopy Zambie” movie as a double bill with Return of the Living Dead.

MarkNM

Or Long Weekend!

MarkNM

Crocodile Dundee is a little outdated in its approach to race and gender, but pobody's nerfect.

Dan Hillen

"Un Cuttery do" had me in stitches. the ongoing foreskin jokes make Patreon worth every penny! 😂

MarkNM

Some of the movie is coming back to me, so she's saying this like 24 hours after she found out her ex-husband was brutally murdered.

Rose Esposito

New Yorkers get an unfairly bad rap as mean jerks...but if you WALK ON OUR HEADS across a crowded subway platform, you're getting Gaddafi'd, and you deserve it.

Rose Esposito

Second movie in a row where the two sexy leads end up married in real life...and then divorced. 😬 (also Joanne Whalley and Val Kilmer)

Ray

Things I learned watching this movie: Woman Attractive, Black man has to be from a tribe, and this is a knife.

Eren Keskin

This kinda scratched a certain itch in me. Steve Irwin was a hero of mine growing up. Even had toys of the bloke.

Hainsworthy

True story. I worked at the Medieval Times in IL back in the 90s. And they had a system where you could propose marriage in front of the entire arena. And if you ever wanted to experience the relativity of time, the 45 seconds where the woman angrily stared at her boyfriend saying nothing became 45 hours of some of the worst tension I've ever experienced.

Catboyslim

If anybody is taking requests how about 1984’s Night Of The Comet? Or 1986’s Australian movie Backlash? ….I’ll hang up and listen lol

Catboyslim

Did they ever show his Foster’s beer commercials in the states ?

Jules of Denial

I’ll buy any Alligator Johnson merchandise-eridoo that Felipe wants to whip up

Jules of Denial

Wow you just transported me back in time

James Richie

I’m old so I saw this in the theaters and repeatedly on vhs. I may be wrong but I kinda remember one of the genital grabs was in the trailer for it.

David

The Loved Ones is also a great one.

David

Another great movie starring John Meillion - The Cars That Ate Paris. Peter Weir's debut movie - truly nothing quite like it!

Busiris

First time watch last night, still can't believe how quickly it just cuts to credits. There's something to be said about a movie not overstaying its welcome, but my god it was almost as if the movie was in a rush and had somewhere else it needed to be. Best screenplay nomination really???? @_@

Kate

I had to come comment about Polish posters! I have a Weekend at Bernie’s poster that makes it look like a horror film, I love it.

Cooper87

As an Australian podcast listener, I cringed when I seen croc dundee on movie list knowing that I would get so many attempted accents. Growing up this movie was on constantly and I must have watched it 100s of times as Paul Hogan was on of my dads favorite comedians. I love the episode and was a great listen. Also I think Danny Mcbride already setup the Alligator Johnson movie with the Cobb Milsap (Michael Rooker) in the latest season of the righteous gemstones.

Todd B

I was anticipating some deep cut Simpsons nods and you guys did NOT disappoint! Made a nice respite from the repeated realization this got a Best Original Screenplay nom over Blue Velvet. Just...fucking Hell.

Daryl Williams

I would've loved Dundee Hook up with Gwendolyn instead.

Paul Jenner

As an Australian, have to shout out incredibly rare it is to see a Fosters in the wild… our supposed beer of choice, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone drink one?

Craig

I reckon they were rare even when the movie came out (though they were everywhere in the UK). They’re virtually impossible to find in Australia now.

Craig

That’s how they did it the 80s. I just watch The Lost Boys for the first time. Granpa comes in, kills the head vampire, delivers a quip. Credits.

Craig

It’s funny that Chris mentions Three Men And A Baby as being part of these type of films because Paul Hogan infamously was offered one of the three men roles and turned it down.

Dan sulin

Couldn’t sell it to you all so they had to push it on us Yanks.

Dan sulin

I was surprised Paul Hogan is still alive and even more surprised that he is only 45 in the movie. Then I remembered this was Australia in the 80s so those 45 years were spent in the ozone depleted sun without sun screen. So that’s why his skin looks like a leather purse

Dan sulin

My theory is the more elaborate the proposal is the more likely the relationship is doomed.

Dan sulin

It’s a cultural thing. Like how many Muslim men’s first names is Mohammed. In Australia everyone first name is actually Crocodile

Enrico Palazzo

Great Fosters chat while I’m sitting in a London pub listening to the pod with a pint of Fosters!

Enrico Palazzo

We had all the Paul Hogan Fosters ads in the UK back in the 80s, along with the Castlemaine XXXX ads. “Snowy! You alright?” “Yeah! I can see the pub from here!”. I guess Australia is all VB and Carlton Draft now.

Tim Batson

The Groupon bit hits home. ✊🏻

Melissa Benjamin

Watched this one when my parents rented it, but my husband and I saw the second one on our first date back in high school. Don’t remember anything about it, and never watched it again. 😂😂😂

Busiris

Oh I definitely know and appreciate the quick roll to credits but this movie probably needed a bit more of a third act, otherwise it just feels incomplete, imo. The Lost Boys, for example, earned that ending after a really entertaining third act.

Brandon

We keep calling him Mick, but let us not gloss over the fact that Hogan named his own character "Michael J," while writing this in 84/85. Sheer genius.

Kureigu

Always liked this movie and it's sequel (never seen the 3rd one) was surprised when you said the term Sheila confused you but realised the reason the slang comes easy to me is that my mother watched so much Australian soap opera on tv in the uk when I was a kid (neighbours on BBC, home and away on itv twice daily i may add) that by the time i was a toddler I spoke with an Australian accent lol.

Tim O'

Cabin was RIGHT THERE to shout out the ending of Us ❤️

Leesha Olivier

I watched it again today after decades. My goodness! The man looks like he's made of an old catcher's mitt.

Matthew Lloyd

I cant remember if it was an interview or part of his standup but Jim Jeffries talks about going to meet Paul Hogan to see if he wanted to play his father in Jefferies tv show. He said no (and Jeffries cast Lazenby) but apparently Hogan still makes loads of money off the Dundee films (this was in the before times) because apparently across the world the film is played every 10 seconds on tv networks.

Jamie

Milo & Otis is at the top of my list of movies I wish I could watch again. Our whole family loved it, I thought Moores narration was hilarious, but knowing what I know now, I just cannot bring myself to watch it.

Ed Harris

Saw this at day camp when I was a kid and have yet to go back to it. Saw the sequel a few times and it could stand to be a Stay Tuned.

Odin Blaine

Platoon was actually the third highest grossing movie for ‘86, Top Gun was #1 😎✈️

Chaz Keracher

I’m going to copyright Alligator Johnson, sell it to Asylum and wait for the checks to roll in.

profondo robbo

I saw the Encore Cut and can confirm that Reginald VelJohnson throwing the spoiler like a boomerang is not set up in any way. Also, Village of the Damned should definitely be an episode at some point.

Brandon

Liquid Sky shoutout! Can we get an episode?

Hobbes Roy

Meant to add: there IS a documentary called Hotel Coolgardie from 2016 whose synopsis is “Fresh off the plane and in need of money, two Finnish backpackers find themselves the latest batch of “fresh meat” sent to work as barmaids at the only pub in a remote Australian mining town. “ CHILLING stuff.

Jethro Gulner

I just want to clarify the spoiler thing is actually a TV antenna for only the fanciest of Limos and conversion vans
