“Bury me at Flynn’s Arcade” - Steve

On this week’s show, we’re finally talking about the landmark special effects movie/ride, Tron! This is the film where a computer programmer, played by the handsome as all get-out Jeff Bridges, gets pulled into his own computer system and has to battle for the freedom of… accounting software? How incredible are the cinematic vibes here? Is it any surprise Bridges needed the codpiece adjusted? How many Star Wars references can you find here? And thank The User we didn’t have to deal with an over-explanatory opening scroll or narration, get that outta here and let us use our brains! PLUS: Never ride in a helicopter with a cast member from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze!

Tron stars Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan, Barnard Hughes, Dan Shor, and the late, great David Warner as Dillinger/Sark/Master Control Program; directed by Steven Lisberger.

Never saw this before tonight. Such a good idea to watch it on mushrooms.

John Halski

I love to death how this movie treats the creation of a game that’s barely a glorified Pac-Man as many multiples more groundbreaking than either an actual transporter or basically Skynet. Such a perfectly 80s timepiece.

Kureigu

Loved tron growing up, actually enjoyed the sequel. The animated series was getting good too but unfortunately it was cancelled. Obviously no one else was enjoying it as much as me and my kids lol

Busiris

I'm with Steve on this, I really kind of wanted us to go back to the real world from time to time. The Tron world is visually striking but I did wish to spend some time in a place that isn't shades of black, red, and blue. I haven't looked at any analysis to affirm this feeling, but the thing this reminded me of the most was The Wizard of Oz.

Kureigu

I always thought the symbolism with the power water was that it was a current.

Cody Downs

Especially the Solar Sailing ship sequence with the Wendy Carlos score at full pitch!

Unicorn Trista

Thank you Eric for coining the term "cyber yuppie"

Scmods

King of Kong is one of those movies where if you try to tell someone about it, they think you’re insane. But it’s an incredible watch. Well worth your time if you’ve not seen it before.

Jason

I always get a kick out the Cabin in Queens tidbits. I always chuckle at the stories that are like “We sat down to watch John Carpenter’s Vampires, the next thing I knew it was February of the next year.”

James C Harris

"Bury Me At Flynn's Arcade!" needs to be a shirt

HockeenightsCT

When Steve was drawing the parallels with Star Wars and mentioned putting the thing in the slightly bigger thing I immediately thought “Does Steve think basketball is Star Wars?”

Robert Walton

Coin Slot is a shirt. It's easy to score at COIN SLOT *shoes required*

Matt

If, on the 20 year anniversary, it was revealed to be a secret Christopher Guest movie I wouldn't bat an eye. It is *insane*. It is, legitimately, my favourite documentary of all time.

John Locke

Been a favorite film of mine for over 40 years. A true masterpiece of film making.

Adam

There is indeed a tron ride at magic kingdom that's fairly new and is a big attraction. It's a little uncomfortable to "sit" in (cuz you gotta bend all weird to get in the light cycle), but the boys may be interested to know that they just updated the ride to include the new Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.

James

Great episode as usual. In response to Stephen: “If it weren't for someone plagiarizing the Honeymooners, we wouldn't have the Flintstones. If someone hadn't ripped off Sergeant Bilko, there'd be no Top Cat. Huckleberry Hound, Chief Wiggum, Yogi Bear? Hah! Andy Griffith, Edward G. Robinson, Art Carney. Your honor, you take away our right to steal ideas, where are they gonna come from?“

Rose Esposito

I too have spent more time than I care to admit highly watching Teen Mom 2 on my couch. 😬 Jenelle is just the fucking worst! And I'm so glad Ashley finally divorced Bar.

MarkNM

For over a decade at Disneyland CA, the Tomorrowland Transit PeopleMover, an extremely slow shuttle that ran on a track around Tomorrowland, had a tunnel where riders would "ENTER THE WORLD OF TRON." The tunnel walls would be projected with Tron clips, most notably the light cycle sequence, which was almost immersive enough to make you forget you were going about 4 mph.

MarkNM

P.S.: For years, the extremely slow and tedious PeopleMover was the Disney park ride that had killed and maimed the most guests.

I.C. Weiner

Farrah did a porn then lied and said she got pregnant during the shoot, causing her scene partner to go scorched Earth on her

Rose Esposito

Oh, Farrah's beyond insufferable, though she was TM OG, not TM 2. I'm glad her daughter Sophia has found the goths, they're a far more stable community for her.

MarkNM

Kids today have seen Doc Hollywood but they call it Cars.

MarkNM

Health tips: Eric is 1000% correct. Cubicle critters do not wash their hands. Keyboards are perhaps the dirtiest thing that people use regularly outside of money. Filthy! No communal food!

Sehnsucht666

To think I could have been in the same venue as Trent Reznor AND Eric Szyszka if I had only gotten those tickets, but Boston sufficed. Excellent episode 🔥

Adam

I remember reading about that as an adult... and it baffled me because it was such a fun/easy ride as a child (no line). But I guess a lot of people would try to get up and move from car to car... and that would spell trouble.

Todd B

David Warner in the helicopter is your indicator of where you go when you die. If he offers to talk The Undiscovered Country, you're golden. If he wants to talk about The Final Frontier, buckle up. It's gonna be a long, rough ride.

Matthew Lloyd

Doc Hollywood was on all the time on British tv in the late 90s and 00's. Also isnt the secret of my success where Fox bangs his own aunt?

Matt

He's like Del Preston from Wayne's World 2. "So the next thing I know me, Rex Reed, and David Sims were in a small sweet shop trying to find enough green M&Ms to fill a brandy glass or Spike Jonze wouldn't go on stage"

Stewart Moncure

Played the video game as a kid, and also as a kid got stuck in the People Mover in Disneyland right in the Tron tunnel. Left that ride through the emergency exit stairs that day.

Ben Sharpe

My brother and I had the glow in the dark action figures. I think you could get them in Shreddies

Daryl Williams

Doc Hollywood, A Hard Way, Life with Mickey, Secret of My secret of my success are all stay times.

Billie Jackson

The schlubby guy who dies immediately is from Babylon 5 as well. He's one of the main aliens, the guy with the sideways hair thing (not Stephen Furst from Animal House, the other one). B5 has it's moments, but Boxleitner in that show sounds exactly like Joe Flaherty's SCTV character Guy Caballero, so it's difficult to take his dramatic line reads seriously.

Dan sulin

I can’t take this Babylon 5 bashing. The show is great. Except the first season. And the filler episodes. And pretty much all the spin offs. It really is good shit though but they first season is rough

Dan sulin

What’s it mean if he just wants to talk about Titanic

Carlos Ramirez

As a Carlos, I LOVED the Carlos go throw sand on the floor at the Coin Slot arcade!! I like to think the boys like me JUST ENOUGH to make me the manager of the establishment lol 😉 BTW I think the show Steve is referencing talking about 90s ideas about cyberspace MIGHT be VR Troopers. Full on Power Rangers Ripoff but it’s just 3 teens in suits and they fight a la The Lawnmower Man in cyberspace… I saw WAAAY to much of that myself

profondo robbo

I can understand not bringing it up, but one of my big takeaways on this viewing was just how much Free Guy rips it off.

James C Harris

Well to be fair, VR Troopers was from Saban like Piwer Rangers but Sreve was talking about Superhuman Samueai Ctber Squad which used footage from the Tsubayara show Gridman. VR Troopers cannibalizzed 2 Metal Hero entries, that had nothing to do with each other to make VE Troopers. In fact, Saban had originally used VR Troopers as a show for Jason David Frank under the name "Cybertra8n" but got slapped with a C&D from Hasbro for obvious reasons

Craig

“ It really is good shit though but they first season is rough” - another thing they ripped off from TNG!

Craig

They clearly based Peter Dinklage’s character in Pixels on Billy Mitchell. It you haven’t seen that, it’s NOT worth your time.

Phillip

Last time I watch the movie was a few years ago, maybe when the Blu-ray came out? Or maybe it was when the sequel was coming out (which I still haven't gotten around to watching). My wife is only a couple years younger but had never seen it and ended up being absolutely confused the entire time and not able to wrap her head around the idea of the characters in the movie being computer programs. The movie is good and a great technical achievement for the time, but most of my nostalgia comes from the Intellivision games. The Tron Deadly Discs game on Intellivision was really good, using the keypad control to throw the disc in 8 directions. And while not a Tron game, there's another Intellivision game called SNAFU that had some modes kinda like the old Snake cellphone game, but one of the modes your "snake" line would keep extending and it was kinda like the light cycles from the movie so we would always just imagine it being a Tron light cycle game, though you couldn't change speed like you can in the arcade game.

Daryl Williams

There was a Tron section in the old People Mover ride in Tomorrowland at Anaheim, Disneyland. Got to make out with my first girlfriend during it. It was all downhill from there.

Richard Buttry

For whatever reason, “Doc Hollywood” was a VHS staple in my house. I’m 41, watched it easily ten times. I would enjoy it!

Carlos Ramirez

Damn Wow that’s a good call. I had no idea, looks like I picked a whole bouquet of Oopsie Daisies

Jonnie Sea

42 years old Grew up watching both movies… You’re telling me RAM is Billy the Kid…mind blown As soon as they said it, I couldn’t believe I never figured it out

Jonnie Sea

Replace VHS with HBO free trial and same

Adam

Tron: Legacy is what I remember Tron looking like when I was a kid, effects wise. You know Disney thought they were going to sell a bunch of plush “Bit” toys. It has such a lovable sidekick vibe.

Ben Sharpe

When Andrew mentions wheres my wallet. i thought of Morty Seinfled at the back surgeon.. "My wallet's gone"!

Joseph Xavier

"96 minutes god bless America" indeed - watched this film sooooo many times growing up, but you better believe if there was a 3 hr cut I'd watch it. I'm so sad that T3 sounds as if it's disastrous. Jared Leto who'd have thunk it...

Jake

Can we get a melatonin commentary for rebel moon part 2 to see who can make it through the entirety of that slop?

Jake

Rebel Snoozementary part 2

Geoff Gershon

What are these guys on about? 😆 The Hard Way was HYSTERICAL....even though James Woods has become an asshole.

MANTE IV

T. Ron Hubbard

MANTE IV

You guys were close. South Park repurposed the Master Control Program’s appearance for Moses.

Jon Brothers

You're not gonna believe this...

Jan

The first 5 minutes of Tron, the line from Star Wars ”there’s too many of them” Cabin: star wars?!

Frank Grimes

In Portland was the arcade Ground Kontrol or Quarterworld? Both are great but I’m connected to GK since the mid 00’s.
