“Everyone’s sweating like pigs and you can feel it” - Steve

On this month’s terrifying We ❤️ Movies episode, we’re goofing on, and gushing over one of the all-time greats, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)! How incredible is the John Larroquette scroll narration? How much of this film’s soundtrack is taken up by people screaming? How horrific is that first hammer hit and the follow-up leg twitch? And that van had to smell atrocious, right? PLUS: Rolling out from Marvel Comics next year: LeatherForce, featuring Wolverine!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre stars Marilyn Burns, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Partain, William Vail, Teri McMinnville, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow, John Dugan, and Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface; directed by the late, great Tobe Hooper.

Interested to listen to this episode. This is a movie I saw for the first time earlier this year in the cinema and I had *major* issues with its treatment of women, but reading afterward it appears to not have been noted by anyone else I could find. So potentially just a misreading or something on my part. So keen to hear a discussion of the movie at length to see what I may have missed or misinterpreted.

Bible Black

Super excited for this episode because it has my small Indiana town's celebrity in it. John Dugan who plays Grandpa Sawyer went to school with my mom. It freaked us out as kids because you could just look him up in the phonebook. Really really nice guy with lots of fun stories.

Eren Keskin

A very visceral experience. Makes you believe Texas is real.

David

Seriously, the greatest horror film ever made.

Zora McBride

One of my favorite movies of all time covered by my favorite podcast of all time! ... (Well, BIOOS and TJ Hooker, too, but it's a subset of this podcast, right?) Y'all are the fucking best. I was feeling pretty depressed yesterday because we're going over the cliff of fascism and everybody's reaction seems to be, ... "What cliff?" Thank goodness for WHM and all your subsidiaries! We need you now more than ever. Get set to wear the blue!

Emil Svensson

I remember watching it with my sister for the first time when I was 18 and she 20. I can recall saying to her afterwards that it felt like having been mentally bludgeoned for an hour and a half. Exhausting. I stand by that, even though the effect of course diminishes with subsequent viewings.

Tanner

I shudder to imagine it.

Jaime Lee Ezell

Loving Steve doing Hunnam’s almost barely American but not quite accent!

Tanner

If you're looking for other resources, "Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film" by Carol Glover is a great read that talks a lot about the TCSM movies.

John Locke

I watched this for the first time when I was 15. And then a couple of days later I was home alone for a weekend during the summer. The power went out at night for a few hours and out in the woods I could a hear a chainsaw. I immediately shut the windows and locked the doors, blew out all the candles and hid under a blanket for bit.

John Locke

Completely agree. Halloween comes close but this is definitely the best.

Matt

TCM 3D (2013) is honestly not TERRIBLE, but they try to pass a 27 year old Alexandria Daddario as being in her 40s and I'm sorry movie but WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

TJ Gaines

Long live “Zoo” being Cabin’s favorite film and being dragged for it.

Ed Harris

For me that sorta adds to the charm of it.

Ed Harris

This one is an absolute classic and so is the second one. I think I saw it for the first time in KCAL in 1997 with Elvira hosting at around ten at night which is almost as good as seeing it on the big screen with a bunch of people. Got that experience a few years later in a horror film class I took at Chapman University.

Matt

AMEN to the "he's just going to spend it on booze" argument. Madam, what do you think I'M going to spend it on?

Matt

WAIT - you guys did something on CBC? My Canadian heart just grew two sizes!

Viscera-Bandito

((SPOILERS)) I think it's good to notice those things, but not necessarily pin it on the filmmakers. It's also a matter of perspective...I always felt like Franklin gets it the worst in this movie. Like sure, Pam has the prolonged death in the chest freezer, but she can fight the whole time. That helpless wheelchair slicing always gets to me. And not to sound like a total creep, but women are just better screamers. You don't get that with a short death.

Watch_N_Rewatch

Lmao 🤣 Eric calling Cabin & Jupin out for the eating of testicles is so on brand for this film, hilarious and pairs perfectly with Eric's rant on people bringing tainted foods to the work potlucks in TCM2 Ep! 😂 Huge recommend listening to the boys love TCM2, excellent EP

Chris

I live here and can barely comprehend it

Dan sulin

It’s not until I hear that theme song that spooky season truly begins!

Melissa Benjamin

I saw this when I was 7 years old, from the back seat of my parents car at the drive in. They thought I was asleep. I thought the joke was on them until I had to sleep with the light on for years. As an adult I certainly appreciate it much more. Great episode!

Christopher Oxentine

I saw this when I was 12 (1984) when my older cousin somehow got a VHS of this. My only problem with the movie is Franklin, if he had been the first one offed I would love this movie, but him being alive for as long as he was makes me just like it.

Lar

The absolute DELIGHT I felt as soon as the Spooktacular theme started up. Let’s goooooo

Alex Murica

hell yeah, a WLM on my favourite film

Chris

If Andrew truly wants pangolins to go extinct I’ve got some good news for him

I.C. Weiner

Not to dox myself too much but I went to Chapman for law school

Busiris

This is one of two movies featured on the podcast this month featuring a character in a wheelchair that gets horrendously killed. However, the death of the wheelchair guy in the other movie this month makes me howl with laughter every time, I have to admit.

Jonathan Lyons

I know no one cares, but my brother showed me this movie when I was a kid. And he convinced me it was documentary (i was dumb lol). He is the reason I like horror movies so much. The anniversary of his death came and went recently, but I dream of him a couple nights a week. It's like losing him again and again. Dreams are supposed to be random, right? But when he shows up in them. They all end the same way. I ask him for help and he says he would love to. But he can't. Cuz he is dead. Sometimes, dead is better. Point is, when I was a kid, the only way I could sleep after watching this was saying that I would never go to Texas. They can't get me and I'm uncomfortable with the idea of being turned into furniture. Same reason im never going to a wax museum or, really, any place Paris Hilton has gone. Sorry. I joke around when I'm uncomfortable and sad. Thanks for reading. Great episode. You guys are the best. Cheers.

Jonathan Lyons

Armadillos, pangolins, rhinos, Tigers, and bears- OH MY. We need to grind them up . Viagra isn't cheap.

Jonathan Lyons

Did you like the Netflix one? I think it is a bad movie but a fun watch. Like "holy shit, that fucker DIED"

Tom Galvin

Great episode as always! I once found the Long Island Cannibal Massacre on DVD at the Kim's Video collection at Downtown Manhattan Alamo!

Alex Murica

none of the ones after 2 are particularly good movies, but I find they're always good for toking up and having a good time anyway lol

Craig

Can someone explain to me the New York CD scam? I was approached a few years ago when visiting the city but said “no thanks” and kept walking. Do they demand money if you take the CD? (Surely anyone under 35 would just say “I don’t have a CD player … do you have it on vinyl?”)

Tim Batson

What an episode! I was a late comer, and didn't see TCM until I was in my 30's. Watching it that first time was amazing.

Lauren James

"Grandpa was always the best with the emails!" has been in my head on loop for the last 24 hours.

Tim O'

This happens in Chicago, too. Someone asks you if you want to try their music and they hand you a CD if you say yes. When you say thank you, they start acting indignant that you didn't pay for it, despite giving you the impression at first that they're just giving away CDs for free. It's annoying 😑

Tim O'

Growing up near Detroit, it was nice to have an extra hockey game on in prime time during the playoffs 😁

MarkNM

I can confirm this also happened to me in Venice Beach.

William K. Wolfrum

Finally watched it just for this episode and I'm really happy I did. Great movie, fun episode.

stephen sammartino

Ok dumb question. I could have sworn these guys have covered silence of the lambs but I can’t find the episode anywhere. They honestly might have just done a Jodi foster impression and I could be thinking of that lol

Leesha Olivier

Brilliant movie and a great episode!

Nathalie 💘

yes exactly Ed Gein was ugly! Charlie is so miscast Ryan Murphy needs to stop with the serial killer shows! he’s bad at it!

Jamie

Scorching hot take time! This one's always left me a bit cold, and I'm 100% convinced it's because of the hype. I didn't really get into horror until after college, and as I began watching more and more, I kept hearing "greatest of all time" again and again. So when I finally get around to watching it, I'm ready for it to beat out the likes of The Thing, Alien, and 28 Days Later. And its....fine. I wish I could go back in time and watch it blind.

MarkNM

That's how I felt about Halloween 78.

MarkNM

I'm a sucker for Leatherface. Hes got so much more personality than Jason or Michael but not the irritating excess of Freddy. He just wants to cut the meat and maybe look all purty.

MarkNM

I don't remember exactly when they've done a Jodie Foster Clarisse impression, but more than likely it would turn into Holly Hunter and by extension Gary Busey.

stephen sammartino

Oh yeah! That was the Batman Superman episode. Shits hilarious. Now I just need to wait for a silence of the lambs episode

Tim O'

I feel the same way, really. I can appreciate how groundbreaking this is in horror history, and the way the movie comments on Vietnam and the economic horror of living in forgotten parts of America. But [magma hot take] I feel like a LOT of the runtime, especially in the back half, is just a whimpering woman screaming for help that isn't going to come while she's physically and emotionally tortured; I didn't like it for the same reason that I don't like the Saw movies. Yeah, it's shot well, but it's still grotesque and not enjoyable to watch.

Tim O'

Since Eric mentioned the possibility, an American Psycho WLM would be most welcome. Gotta start training for listener request month 🥊🥊

Jamie

@Tim, yeah that's another part of it. It's hard not to watch TCM and think "this is why we have Terrifier. This is why we have Hostel."

Billie Jackson

Eric talking about aliens took me way back to BIOOS. As did the talk in The Warriors about Santacon.

Billie Jackson

The bus scene felt claustrophobic and memorable, but I've forgotten most of the rest of it.

Marshal Case

This was a hell of an episode. All the door jokes just kept getting better and better. Don’t think I’ll be able to watch it the same way again.

Sonya Ballantyne

This was such a formative movie for me as a teen. I saw it on Showcase, a wild Canadian channel that showed insane horror movies while also showing soft core tv porn like Red Shoe Diaries. I remember how Showcase edited a film trailer for the movie to show during commercial breaks of other shows and TCM just looked so cool. I think it's why I don't like gore in a film. TCM manages to be disgusting and horrifying and you don't see any gore.

Mark D Myers

Hey remember that time leather face was in mortal kombat and made a mask out of Cassie cage's face?

Arthur martinez

The porn parody has Franklin played by Ron Jeremy just so everyone knows lol

Heidi

John Larroquette was literally paid in weed to do the narration. Incredible.

Richard Buttry

My wife and I had a debate about repairing a door or replacing it this morning. (It’s a hundred year old house, can’t just replace it). That bit killed me.

RJ Cunningham

Go Greg! Also fantastic Simpsons "when we got feathers" reference

Tala Hobballah

Random but I'd listen to the guys go through a list of the most horrific looking animals in nature.
