“It’s kind of a ghost-Jurassic Park opening!” - Steve

On this week’s episode, our 2025 Halloween Spooktacular continues as we dive into some early-aughts horror while chatting about the 2001 remake, Thir13en Ghosts! First off, how incredibly stupid is this official title? Why did they need to give those ghosts dumb ghost names? What kind of sick person would actually be excited to live in a house like this? And why did the producers think EXTREEEEEME William Castle remakes were a good idea? PLUS: If you used ghost magic to psychically absorb the entirety of IMDb, would the website’s shoddy functionality make you implode?

Thir13en Ghosts stars Tony Shalhoub, Embeth Davidtz, Matthew Lillard, Shannon Elizabeth, Alec Roberts, JR Bourne, F. Murray Abraham, and Rah Digga as Maggie; directed by Steve Beck.

Alright! Monk's episode of Scooby Doo! I love Monk.

Sara Syd

DID I JUST SAY THERE WAS A PETTING ZOO DOWNSTAIRS!? Noooooooo! There are GHOSTS downstairs, Arthur.

Voror

This is a weird guilty pleasure for me even if there's really more negative than positive to go around. I like that absurd house. It's nice that it actually seemed to be a real set.

johnny stocker

Had never seen this one and just gave it a watch. Capital 'D' dumb and I rolled my eyes a lot, but I kinda did end up having fun with it.

jribs

Love the one with the lotto balls

Jonathan Lyons

I have a pointless headcanon that this movie exists in the same world as only murders in the building. I don't know why, but I think it a lot. It's just like how it makes sense that push and jumper and chronicle all take place in the same world even though there is literally no evidence for it. Kinda like how bullet train, snowpiercer, and Thomas the tank engine also share a universe. You know im right. Great episode, guys. As always

Busiris

Strongly agree with Andrew that the old William Castle movies are totally charming. That's the exact word I used when watching the original 13 Ghosts the other day. They do a fake fly on a string gag, for goodness sake! Also, I can't believe it but I have to co-sign a recommendation about Ghost Ship. Not a good movie but weirdly entertaining and memorable. It would absolutely make a great episode.

Tim O'

When I was a kid and my brother was high-school age, he was obsessed with this movie. He got it from Blockbuster a bunch of times. I can't wait to hear how dogshit it is.

WarOfTheBees

This was definitely a movie where I looked up what was up with the titular 13 ghosts's backstories and then felt satisfied that I knew everything I cared about with it.

Frank Grimes

Monk, rah digga, and Shannon Elizabeth made for a fun movie. I loved this film growing up...but i was also a teen...

Tim O'

Since Chris mentioned it - it is absolutely worth your time to go on YouTube and watch the first scene of Ghost Ship. It's a GREAT cold open.

Jason

Steve just pitched the next Jurassic World movie. They have to go back to the island, but this time all the dinosaurs are ghosts! Ghostasurus Rex!

MarkNM

Peak Big Box Horror along with Ghost Ship and House on Haunted Hill. I can watch the Trilogy of Trash any old day of the week with a big fat smile on my face. But only on DVD.

MarkNM

It's Shinetanic.

Gavin Copley

This was the first movie I remember being scared of. I wandered into the room as a wee lad as the glass dropped and was scared of automatic sliding doors doing the same to me for years😂

Albert C

“Titty ghost rising” 😂

Adam Ray

I've only seen this and Ghost Ship once each. That opening of Ghost Ship wasn't enough to excuse the rest of that movie. But Cabin is right, just because of that opening it is easily better than 13 ghosts. This one went in one eye and out the other..... Isn't that how that saying goes?

Kevin Lynch

The original 13 Ghost isn’t necessarily a comedy but it was a gimmick movie

Rose Esposito

I'm dead @ Steve complaining that the 3 can be an E, but the 1 has to be an I, not a T, as that is exactly what I said in my LB review three years ago. 🫶🏼 we're s0ulm8s

Tala Hobballah

The production design really is what brings me back. And Matthew Lillard is legitimately good with the little he gets.

Tala Hobballah

Me randomly watching it one day "hmm 3 out of 4 of these family members have Middle Eastern backgrounds, I wonder if they are Arab American in the film". Film says they are Greek. Even pre 9/11 we couldn't get 13 Ghosts? Lmao

G Goldhar

You should watch Monk! John Turturro is in it! And hes not directing so its good!!!

Felipe Sobreiro

Guys, idea for a future Animation Damnation: there is a SAVAGE DRAGON cartoon, it lasted 2 seasons!

Lar

Bro I watched this like last week to prepare for this episode, immediately forgot I watched it, and then said “oh I should watch this to prepare” and then had a long pause before I went “oh, right” lololol Goes to show how much I paid attention when anyone but Matthew Lillard was on screen. 😬

Eren Keskin

The twitchy editing gave me the worst headache.

Eren Keskin

Did Stallone design this glass house?

Deano Rezzz

Thir13en Ghosts is one of those movies I watched as a teenager and discovered, to my dismay, that movies could be very bad.

Deano Rezzz

It probably awoke something in him for sure

Matt

if you want a "T" you need to use 7! Didn't anyone making this movie speak "1337" back in the early aughts?

Winson Paine

They were probably fuckin n008z

I.C. Weiner

Now, I may just be a big city trust and estate attorney, but where I'm from (California) video wills are not valid, in Real app or otherwise.

Jaime Lee Ezell

Psych is great, y’all!! Way too many advertisements though, I agree.

Jason

I just want Eric to respond to that one infamous page of the most juvenile depiction of sex.

Christopher Oxentine

I really like the movie. Never mind. I re-watched it. It was not good. Also, in the 70's I was a disgusting shit boy.

Sam

This is the movie that made me realize movies could be *bad* as a kid. I haaaaated it.

Sam

Came here to post exactly that!!

Ray

I was today years old when I realized the glasses thing is what scary movie 2 was making fun of lol.

jribs

Steve mentioned accessing his 401k. I hope he has a beekeeper on his side

RJ Cunningham

“Power up the cube!” - I said it at the same time as the character, except I was already quitting on the movie and was talking about my GameCube

RJ Cunningham

The slut-bitch conversation perfectly encapsulated late 90s early 2000s scumbag culture. 9/11 didn’t help, but this country was going down a cultural drain pipe regardless of losing all of our rights

RJ Cunningham

Also not sure if I missed it mentioned but the attempts to Danny Torrance this Bobby punk, especially with the Razor scooter being an ode to Danny’s big wheels was quite on the nose

Voror

Finished the episode and completely agree that Lillard should have been the lead since he's way more interesting then Shaloub and his family. It was making me think of that recent Jurassic World film and how the family in there felt completely unnecessary. Granted, not sure the film would have been much better without them anyway. In terms of tweaking the whole thing, I feel like you could keep the will reading aspect but move that to being in thr house and instead have a bigger cast without any kids. Have it all be associates of F. Murray Abraham or something.

Catherine McKee

The return of Martin Cinemax is welcomed.

Cat Coleman

I was just thinking about the weird soft spot I have in my heart for 90s teen movie frat boy sidekick Matthew Lillard

Nicholas Knecht

I believe I've seen it. Steel cable right?

Nicholas Knecht

Watched pretty much all of Psych when it was on USA, it was fun most of the time. But my USA fav was Burn Notice, which was basically the Equalizer. But it really built the characters of the show up.

Dennis Stack

It feels like a bunch of music video and commercial directors of this era were all "hey, David Fincher and Michael Bay successfully made the jump to films, so can I!" And for the vast majority of them it's like, "no mf, you can't"

Matthew Taylor

It was kind of a throwaway but “Opus Dei-care” is an *excellent* joke

Jonnie Sea

Hybrid Theory is still…pretty good!

Harry Baals

Worked at a movie theater when this came out. The sound mix was so crazy loud that it blew out one of our speakers behind the screen during the first show. Painful to listen to in a theater unless the volume was cranked ridiculously low.

Tim O'

Yup!

Ed Harris

I have a soft spot for Dark Castle releases (House of Wax is surprisingly solid) but this one is just dumb.

Pete

Yeah, movie’s not great but Lillard rocks here.

Emil Svensson

I have to say, Eric has had some all-time clever puns over the years.

Matt Watterson

I can still feel it when the main character got a finger cut off while it was in that floor grate.

Pete

Wasn't that House of Wax?

Gone

I used to have a terrible job and every October the Spooktacular would make it a little more bearable. Now I’m kinda feeling that old charge from these episodes helping me muscle through work cause it’s my first day back from two glorious weeks of vacation I spent at a film festival and catching up on the WHM Spooktacular that I missed, and it feels like coming home from a hard day and someone made you soup from scratch.

Cyn

So glad they brought up the dvd special features I was obsessed with them when I was 12 haha
