Grab a mop and some air freshener because on this month's Halloween-adjacent Animation Damnation, we're talking about the disgusting cartoon adaptation, Toxic Crusaders!

We're starting at the start, episode one: "The Making of Toxie." Originally airing March 1, 1991, this is the episode that kicks things off like the first film, with hopeless Melvin being humiliated at the gym and thrown in toxic waste, only to become Toxie (we're not saying Toxic Avenger here). This episode also has a horrendous recurring joke they beat you to death with, an alien bug creature as the main bad guy, and a slew of additional characters that are all betting on your love of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will help you give this show a chance and... nope! PLUS: Lots of lightbulb talk!

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting Animation Damnation on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going! We know you have a number of choices for pods and we appreciate you spending some time with us!Original cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

The phrase "get a bucket and a mop... " Came to mind when I read that intro And that's because the song WAP by Cardi B. & Megan thee stallion Has forever changed the way I look at mops

Wet Ol' Pussy?

This was my introduction to the toxic avenger...I unironically loved this show as a kid. I liked the big nosed crusader with the sneezer power

Has Andrew played the beat 'em up Bud Spencer & Terence Hill: Slaps & Beans from 2017 and its sequel from 2023? Critics are lukewarm to mildly positive, while user reviews are almost unanimously positive. That could be down to nostalgia, though, seeing as how huge the duo is for certain generations in some parts of the world. If nothing else, the pixel graphics look pretty dang good and they don't seem aggravatingly hard.

Listening to Andrew gradually commit to buying the Troma Beat-em-Up, in real time, made my morning

Credit where it's due for killemoff, he's thinking about the big picture with his pollution based Villainy.

I kinda relate to this show, because I know what it's like to have your life dramatically improve after a major transformation. Only in my case, instead of becoming a radioactive mutant, I just came out as trans.

Kassandra Hope

I don't know if I'm 100% ready to call this a trans allegory...but I did watch it a lot as a kid and I am also trans...so.....

NFlux Forever

I'll admit the metaphor isn't perfect but there are parallels and overlap.

This one was a little surreal for me because as a child I thought the toxic “crusaders” (why the fuck not Avengers) were actually part of the TMNT line. I was too young for this show, but old enough to catch the last 3 years of turtlemania. I got these at a garage sale and just assumed that they were turtles characters. In the last few years I found out it was actually a show because Lloyd Kaufman started ranting about it on Twitter. He claimed that he got screwed and that the Toxic Crusaders could have been huge. Thanks for this trip down memory lane, banter was entertaining as always.

I meant WAP. I was tired when I wrote that, so, sorry to anyone I offended

My local video store let me rent The Toxic Avenger when I was maybe 12? I was deeply disturbed but watched the whole thing. I later owned the Toxie action figure

Mark D Myers

I'm also getting that game day one.

Yeah man, Troma really should've died right alongside the videotape. Whatever you might think of them (and I'm not much of a fan either), that's the era they belong in.

MANTE IV

I’m an easy mark for Troma’s punk rock ethos, but they really do use it as an excuse to peddle trash. Never had any use for this cartoon, and as a kid I’d watch practically anything.
