“He looks like he’s about to go on tour with Waylon Jennings” - Chris on Kurt’s mustache

On this week’s episode, We ❤️ Movies Month comes to an end as we welcome back our bud, Jamelle Bouie, to chat about the stacked-cast Western, Tombstone! How incredible is the casting job here? Would this thing work without the majesty of Kurt Russell? Was Sam Elliot the only one who already had a mustache going into this production? And, hot damn, do we miss Bill Paxton. PLUS: Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp play Guess Who together!

Tombstone stars Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Charlton Heston, Jason Priestley, Jon Tenney, Stephen Lang, Thomas Haden Church, Dana Delany, Paula Malcolmson, Lisa Collins, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Joanna Pacula, Michael Rooker, Harry Carey Jr., Billy Bob Thornton, Paul Ben-Victor, John Philbin, Robert John Burke, Billy Zane, Wyatt Earp, John Corbett, Peter Sherayko, Buck Taylor, Terry O’Quinn, Frank Stallone, and Robert Mitchum as The Narrator; directed by George P. Cosmatos.

Matthew Taylor

Always a treat when you guys have Jamelle on the show.

Zac's Panhandling

Watched this for the first time a few years ago and was doing the “Leo point” at every cast member. INSANELY stacked. My favorite is Harry Carey Jr though, love this movie having that connection to the past

Tony King

Watched this for the first time last night, and really enjoyed it! I'm gutted it took me so long to see it. Also, that cast is crazy!

Craig

Hell yeah, my Listener Request Month WLM pick! Saw this as part of a movie marathon with friends when it was out in theatres. None of us had heard of it (it was the 2nd or 3rd film) and we were blown away.

Jan

I wrote an essay about the wild west & paraphrased the intro from Tombstone but i had a vhs copy and Robert Mitchum was pretty unclear so i had to replay it over n over to get it in english even though the essay was in swedish, so don’t ask it was 30 years ago…. And somehow i was 18…. Wtf??

WarOfTheBees

This movie is Sesame Street for dads. This Thanksgiving, if any older male relatives start getting fussy about politics, throw on Tombstone and you've bought yourself two hours of peace.

Adam Ray

Literally the only western I can watch start to finish.

James C Harris

I love this movie. Mind you, I also like Wyatt Earp so my judgement shouldn't be trusted

MarkNM

In Vino Veritas! Happy Thanksgiving, WLM (and Jamelle,) and thanks for teeing one up that we've all been waiting for.

MarkNM

Wyatt Earp isn't necessarily a bad movie, it's just a little too long. Most unfortunately, it was Antz and Tombstone was A Bug's Life.

Jaime Lee Ezell

Love this episode!! And so glad Jamelle is on it!!

James C Harris

Exactly! The length does that movie in. Tombstone is more an action flick versus the biopic Wyatt Earp is

Matt

God-Tier Dadfernoon here

Francesca Gravatt

Saw this for the first time shortly after Kilmer passed, and I was surprised to finally have answers for Brandon Walsh’s FUCKING HAIR in the first few eps of S4. Thirty years that bothered me.

Billie Jackson

There's a tiny Bruce Willis Tom Mix crying in the background of the tattoo for the bonus Sunset reference.

MarkNM

Wow, Sunset was a bad movie. Late era Blake Edwards gets pretty turrible.

Regarding the inflation of $500, the inflation calculator goes back to 1913, and $500 then is over $16,000 now

Gone

It’s funny, I think anyone would agree that Bill Paxton is a bigger name than Michael Biehn, but they acted in at least three movies together and every time Biehn was the bigger role. Also, I don’t think I’d want a Ringo/Bill character amalgamation, but not for a very good reason. I think there’s a really interesting story to tell there where Bill and Ringo’s dynamic mirrors Wyatt and Doc’s. It already does, Wyatt and Bill are very normal and classical versions of their respective sides of the good/evil coin, while Ringo and Doc are their chaos-personified best friends. The movie just doesn’t really do anything with it aside from Wyatt kills Bill and Doc kills Ringo.

I.C. Weiner

Doubling up on inflation comments. In 1893 life expectancy was 46.4 years. So, a 30 year old was 65% through their life expectancy. In 1993 it was 75.6 years. So, adjusting for inflation a 30 year old in 1879 would be equivalent to about a 49 year old in 1993

Damon LeCornu

Love this movie. Back in '93, me and my friends watched this movie four times in the theater.

Rose Esposito

How much do you have to pay at Michael Biehn's famed Comic-Con table to get him to do the gun twirly thing?

Hard To Gwil

Powers Boothe is seriously one of the greatest names in naming history. Like Dick Warlock levels of awesome. I salute you Boothe parents.

Ed Harris

My favorite western not directed by Sergio Leone.

Steven Avalos

I get why it didn't work for Andrew, but I love the Kurt Russell "NOOOOOO!!!!" its always makes me laugh

Daryl Williams

1897 inflation says that $500 is roughly $19k 2025. That's a spicy wager but ain't unheard of.

Robert

It’s always Cynthia

Paul

I can’t believe the guys talked about “Tombstone” without once mentioning its inferior rival movie: Kevin Costner’s “Wyatt Earp.”

Felipe Sobreiro

Sam Elliott is also mustache-less in Justified (which I just finished) and I got to say: sorely missed

Dennis Stack

All the mustache talk randomly sprung in my head the memory of seeing Tom Selleck on Conan one time. His old mustache was in a coma and Tom Selleck smothers it with a pillow 😂

Jason

Given the talk around 1:08, I would imagine Steve received a lot strange texts from his family & friends asking why he put “a house bucket 4 dunking (not cum)” on his Christmas list.

Eren Keskin

Howdy! Any of you fellers played one of them Red Dead Redemption games? It's a rootin'-tootin' good time, and the main villain looks and sounds exactly like Powers Boothe.

We Hate Movies

Whoa, look at this high roller over here! j/k - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I guess that was my problem was I was kinda chuckling in a moment I knew I shouldn't have been! Still a great movie. - Andrew

Re: Captain Ron as a stay-tuned - I'll probably say this again here if or when that movie ends up as an episode, but I will admit right here that Captain Ron is my wedding night movie. I don't know how many folks pop in a movie on their wedding night, but that's definitely what my partner and I did, lmao.

Jan

Sad that the young guys in the hero ensemble are gone.

Sh'boom Sh'boom

“Like a lamer westworld” you’re describing City Slickers

Kemper

I heard an interview with Kurt Russell in which he said that Cosmatos was hired just as a way for Kurt to secretly direct the movie. Kurt said that Stallone had told him that Sly really directed the movies he'd done with Cosmatos. That the guy was happy to take a check and credit and put up with studio bullshit. Per Kurt, the deal was that he wouldn't ever reveal it while Cosmatos was alive. If I remember right, Kurt also claimed that he had a lot more footage and had toyed with the idea of doing a director's cut but it just seemed like too much hassle. Release the Russell cut!!

Arthur Cunningham

I would now like to see the prequel, Johnny Ringo: Frontier Psychopath.

Matt

wtf I wasn't expecting to feel bad for Clint Howard today

JK

Just did a double rewatch of Executive Decision and Breakdown after this episode and wow, stay the fuck tuned for both hopefully (although Captain Ron does need to come first)

Rose Esposito

I think we might need a t-shirt of Wyatt and a near-death Doc playing Guess Who, captioned "you are Cynthia."

HockeenightsCT

Glad there are other The Quick and The Dead appreciators here. Amazing that Sharon Stone wasn’t just in the movie, she basically willed it into existence-she hand picked Raimi to direct and fought the studio to cast both Leo and Russell Crowe.

Sonya Ballantyne

If I haven't seen the movie talked about, I will most of the time listen just to see if it's something to check out. When I heard in this episode that Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn were in the movie, I decided to stop the episode so I could watch the movie. I got the flu so I rested and watched the movie and really liked it! Excited to listen to the podcast now and really glad I didn't know what was going to happen <3

Adam Lewis

Missed this in sequence but... KURT. RUSSELL. RULES.

RJ Cunningham

Which is the other 90s western Steve mentioned other than Unforgiven and Quick and the Dead, “On a Mountaintop?” I can’t find a 90s western with a title like that

Robert Ippolito

I was so happy they brought up the Chappelle show skit because I always think the same thing
