It's a very special edition of our SoCal-set TV recap show, MELR0210! Donna Martin graduates!

On this special Beverly Hills, 90210-only episode of MELR0210, we're talking all about the big season three two-parter, "Commencement"! Originally airing May 19, 1993, this is the episode where the whole gang, Donna Martin included, graduates high school! And what better way to celebrate that huge milestone on the show than with.... a clip show?

That's right! A two-part clip show! Re-live all the amazing moments like: Brenda and Dylan fighting in a parking lot, Jim Walsh getting big-dicked by a high school-age rich boy, that time some babes stole Steve's car, and yes, that time Scott shot himself! It's all here, plus the lead-up and actual graduation ceremony that serves as the framing device for the episode which features some choice Andrea annoyances, Steve Sanders ridiculousness, and more. Boy, what a BAD idea a clip show was, but it made for some excellent episode fodder!

MELR0210 is a WHM podcast where the guys blissfully stroll through the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place timelines. The episodes covered will run in broadcast order unless otherwise specified.

Kuato (and the freedom brigade)

I think we are only 15 or 16 episodes from the first "addicted to drugs" storyline for one of the main cast members 😎

I only remember the valedictorian speech because it literally was the valedictorian who was accused of plagiarism but the act didn’t affect his GPA enough for him to be disqualified reading “Oh The Places You Will Go” by Dr. Seuss. I remember my classmates thinking it was wild that he would do something like that after being accused of plagiarism. 😂🤣😂🤣

This one was an interesting watch for me being that I graduated from High School in the Year of our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-Three AND I attended the University of Minnesota. I wonder if I had a class with Brenda Walsh...

If you pause it you can see the amount on check Dillon gets and I believe it is $3.5 mil. Yes, I am aware how sad it is that I did this.

Regarding the scantron mistake: in high school there was some class I took where the teacher gave weekly tests, and there were always 3 versions of the test to prevent cheating. The problem for the teacher was that someone cracked the code and there was some marker on the test itself and the answer order was always the same. So, I stopped even looking at the questions and one time fucked up the scantron so bad. I didn't care about failing that one test but was so worried I accidentally revealed the secret that the entire class knew about the answer key. But, fortunately, I didn't so I got to survive the rest of high school

Re: the scene of James Eckhouse eating the fruit. I would be in total disbelief if I was told he's eating that fruit over and over for the scene. I only believe that this show ever does a single take, maybe a second take if someone really flubs a line. Multiple takes? I'd be positively stunned!!!

one of my best friends was also valedictorian and I don’t remember a damn thing she said lol this ending does feel like they’re going to end the show and then have like 3-4 spinoffs. we could have had UC-Dylan, Brenda Minnesota, Beverly Hills University, and the Voice of West Beverly

I remember our high school graduation being held fairly late in the evening...we went out for dinner at a nice Italian restaurant a few blocks away before hand and the ceremony ran very late. It was awful...the dinner was good though 😄

I got so much side work in the house done watching this The creators only put in 50% of the effort to make these episodes so I only put 50% of the effort in watching them lol

Too bad we never got the BrendaSota spin off, I would've liked to see the ep where she tried out to be a cheerleader and ran afoul of football coach Craig T. Nelson. Crossover town, baby!

A WHM "clip show" would actually be clever and funny, but I imagine the editing nightmare of that one episode would probably be like half a season's work.

Francesca Gravatt

Currently in a Seinfeld rewatch - the ‘breathtaking’ and Boticelli’s refs sent me 🤣

I’m tapping out midway through Part 1. I made it as far as the Wayne’s World sketch

Busiris

Sad to think about all the emotional abuse he put Eckhouse through on that day.

I had subtitles on and no joke the Brandon song lyrics are "Brandon wants a girl who's Dreamy, Brandon wants a a girl who's Creamy" Dude, that's your brother, easy on the creamy talk.

Aaron Spelling's original plan for 90210 was to not have them graduate, they would stay in high school forever. This is the reason they were juniors twice, because it took some time to convince him to let the kids get older

Andrew

At this time in TV, the norm was much more about not having major status changes, so the notion of having the kids change grades, much less graduate, was a tough sell, hence all the hand wringing about having viewers come back

Daug

I certainly remember my valedictorian’s speech because he completely plagiarized several lines from Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen.

Mark D Myers

This is the most inappropriate display at a graduation sense porky's revenge.

Billie Jackson

I was thinking Ecks Wide Shut as a joke, but The Shining does work even better.
