“It is an obnoxious way to tell a story…” - Andrew on the film's structure

On this week’s show, Listener Request Month 2026 makes the chicken come home to roost as we are finally forced to chat about Troy Duffy’s 1999 dorm-room-poster-movie, The Boondock Saints!

Why in the world did they think this ‘re-cap the crime’ format needed to happen? Why is Rocco’s character name just the real actor’s actual name? Where do they get this super-human strength to rip toilets out of floors and jump off five-story buildings with ease? And what’s with Troy Duffy’s hatred of the Mafia? PLUS: If you get bit by a Muppet, will you turn into one by the next full moon?

The Boondock Saints stars Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, David Della Rocco, Billy Connolly, Gerard Parkes, Carlo Rota, Ron Jeremy, and Willem Dafoe as Paul Smecker; directed by Troy Duffy.

A lot of the people that were into this movie back in the day...not the greatest dudes. The Godawful shitheads that turned Woodstock '99 into a tothl fucking disaster were definitely all the type of guys that looooooved this movie. I fucking promise you Pete Hegseth has seen it 50 times.

jribs

Men of a certain age can’t deny not taking to this movie during adolescence.

Robert

The one and only pro-mafia podcast!

Busiris

Only just this week watched this movie and boooy I wasn't a fan. But hey, here are some fun WHM details re: their storied history of the early days. The episode on The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is episode 109, which appears from my podcast app to be the last episode in the archive but also the first episode on the free feed - available in both places. Just like this movie, that movie was a listener request pick! And also the episode for the 2nd movie was the first episode to use the "Hurrah! A Bolt Of Light!" produced WHM theme song. Just some cool things about two very not cool movies.

Tony King

I had somehow never seen this movie before, so watched it for the first time this week, and boy did I hate it. I am positive though that I would've been into it if I saw it in 1999 as an idiot 16 year old, so I'm glad that didn't happen! I didn't think I'd like Supernova more than anything, but here we are!

Calvin Lindfors

To go in on the incident further, basically the whole Kitty Genovese thing is a lie. Her neighbors reacted incredibly quickly, it was *the cops* who waited to do anything because she was in a "low priority area". The so-called bystander effect was straight up just copaganda to push the blame off the inaction of the NYPD onto civilians.

James C Harris

Now that you're WGN famous, I hope you don't forget us little people

Simon McCormack

This is why we need to have a reverse Saint Patrick’s Day. Just one day each year in which all of us who claim Irish descent try to avoid saying or doing anything that will embarrass the motherland.

Tim O'

Dafoe surrounded by Muppets? I'm there on opening night.

WarOfTheBees

I had a friend who was from South Boston, dude used to play this movie on repeat like 24/7. This and Dropkick Murphys blaring out of his room.

Les Whinen

I too was once a stupid kid and thought Norman Reedus lighting a cigarette off the gas stove was the coolest thing id ever seen.

TJ Gaines

I need to go into that worm hole after work.

adam mason

Not sure if I ever sat and watched this fully but like Chris I've only seen bits and parts of this at house parties. Mainly folks rewinding the cat scene over and over again.

James C Harris

Is the girl in the nudie booth Jeanna Fine or is that only in the deleted scene?

RJ Cunningham

Can vouch for the “where you going?! Nowhereaa” somehow having quoted like 20 years ago but was SHOCKED when I heard it, never woulda guessed/remembered it was from this.

Jason

The documentary Overnight is kinda lowkey a fascinating portrayal of a gaggle of douchebags. All the stuff with the band is a hilarious time capsule of a certain brand of early aughts dude rock.

Matt

I did not have a Boondock Saints poster in college I had a Reservoir Dogs and Scarface poster LIKE A REAL COOL GUY

stephen sammartino

Best st. Pattys day ever. I’m slightly ashamed to say my brother and I got the matching tattoos. It was our first tattoo and we loved this movie back in the day. Can’t really go back to anymore without cringing but it was great memories at the time lol

RJ Cunningham

Watching that Troy Duffy documentary, I just could not wrap my head around "why the fuck is he getting so much money/backing from Miramax?!?!?!?" Like based on the script?? I do not fucking get it, and then Troy Duffy being such a stupid fuck as to not take complete and utter advantage of the opportunity, vs being a fucking entitled (based on nothing!!!) idiot and pushing back so hard against Miramax as to end his career before it started. Also, he is so Trump-like in it, it's crazy. Also he's an adult overalls guy. Then I heard the Brood play and it all made sense.....just kidding it's perplexing. Also yes by Miramax I mean mainly Weinstein but one scum bag at time. In fairness to Duffy, the degrees of scumbaggery are galaxies apart

Dan Hillen

eating that shitty cracker always made me feel invincible haha

RJ Cunningham

Reservoir Dogs and one of those early 1900s French art nouveau Absinthe posters to appear ultra legit

Matt

Oh my god I know exactly what poster that was. That was stored in a deep locker somewhere in my brain. Did you also purchase it from that weird travelling poster vendor that would just set up on campus for a week every semester?

RJ Cunningham

HA! Yes first semester freshmen year and never went back but saw him cleaning house on all sorts of "cool" freshmen boys every time he came back

We Hate Movies

It's kind of how I, a guy with a ton of Irish ancestry, celebrate St. Paddy's Day as an adult. Stay home, cook a meal with family, drink a bunch of beer and liquor in my own living room and then fall asleep on the couch. - Andrew

Frank Grimes

Fuck Nefarious. I saw a trailer in front of some random horror movie and was a bit interested, so decided to see it in the theater. One of the "trailers" before the film was some gun rights bullshit...it was then I realized the film is not what the trailer framed it as...and you guys are correct, it's some religious Christian horror film nonsense. God I was mad that day lol.

RJ Cunningham

“Classic Duffy reversal” by Cabin got a nice cackle

Rob Brown

Yeah, in the documentary, he’s like “Fuck THAT guy!” and “I’d never work with THIS guy!” with all these big names, and they probably forgot who he was two days after his party or bar opening or whatever it was.

Rob Brown

Having grown up in the Chicagoland area, it always blew my mind that you could pick that channel up in so many places across the country. Like, I’d go out to Washington state to visit family, and they had it for some reason.

Rob Brown

I was in college when this movie really hit in the early aughts, but I was also a little older because I started after getting out of the military, so I grew up on all the movies that this one seems to want to be. I tell people that it’s a good gateway movie, that if you enjoy this one for some reason, you should probably watch all the stuff from the generation before that Troy Duffy obviously saw. I think this movie is pretty shitty, but I think in terms of the impact it had, it actually helped that it was stuck in development hell for as long as it was, because it avoided getting caught up in the wave of Tarantino clones that plagued the late 90s. I think Overnight showed that Duffy got his deal right after the ‘97 Oscars? This thing could have been “Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead” or any number of movies from around that time that had a clever title that no one gave a shit about.

Catboyslim

I saw this so long ago but remember thinking “ Where are the women?” I guess Dafoe in a tutu? I lived in Ireland, and NOBODY under 40 ever went to church, I mean nobody, so I’m to believe these dudes are into the church?

James C Harris

It was a ",Supperstation" like WOR was. WGN was in Florida as well, this I know from visiting my gandma

Rose Esposito

Hoo boy, really rethinking my college-era taste. 😬 I did NOT have any posters, however. I had Edward Scissorhands and HP posters, like a lady. That was NOT an accurate telling of the Kitty Genovese story, btw!! It was the middle of the night, many people DID call the cops (but many were also scared to do so bc it was an immigrant neighborhood and, well, the cops), and one lady was even with her when she died. Watch the documentary The Witness (2015), it's really good. 🩷

Ed Harris

Never seen this one and I’m glad you guys watched it so I don’t have to. My dorm room poster was Lethal Weapon 3. There would’ve been more, but I think by that point my Terminator 2 poster had torn as had my Jason Goes to Hell the Final Friday one. One friend of mine had a Six String Samurai poster in his dorm though. He was way cooler than me.

Chris

I know not one, but TWO people with the Aquitas/Veritas tattoos from this movie (one of them is a woman if you can even believe it). Haven’t seen either of them in years so not sure if they’ve covered them up or are still proudly repping the Saints

Evan

As someone who's half Irish and half black... there's no internal conflict, this movie just plain blows. And yes, I did like it as a scumbag teenager 😄

Dennis Stack

My cousin tried to get me on board with this idea for so long 😂 so glad I didn't

Dennis Stack

Another hilarious episode! Can't wait to see you guys on Sunday!

David Thompson

"Theyre watching in heaven " FFS 😂😂

Frank Grimes

I’m something of a recovering Boondock Saints fan myself I’ve seen HappyTime Murders. At least it was a Henson making muppets fuck and do drugs. Silly string muppet jizz was a bit much. But is it better than Boondock Saints? Yes. But both, not great.

Gone

I always thought the opening in the church was a flash forward.

Elliott Tipton

The comment of an aware action movie with tropes? I think that's Hot Fuzz

Chris

In the annals of Miramax history, Troy Duffy is like Kevin Smith's Wario

Brandon Taper

This is the most "And then this happens!" movie that's actually a "And then this happened a little bit ago!" movie.

ediblegenius

Then that would make David Della Rocco the Jason Mews which- actually makes perfect sense. I'm on board

Amber Schumacher

I think a lot of us have first tattoos that are pretty cringe. I got a tramp stamp of a Celtic cross in high school. I’m no longer Christian and I’ve never been Irish, so yeah 😅.

Frank Grimes

I hate that I remember this, but El Duche knocks out Willem DaFoe because Duche doesn’t kill women or kids and he sees DaFoe from the back so he thinks she’s a woman.

allegedlycool

There was a tv pilot made for Booksock Saints the show. You guys were so close.

Emil Svensson

Re: Eric's comparison at the start of the episode of Duffy/Tarantino being worse, Troy Duffy is as far as anyone can tell (we can all be serial killers in private) 100 %, unequivocally a better person than Tarantino. What with the whole Polanski child r*pe defending (on the record and in no uncertain terms).

Gone

True story I was in a gun shop a few years back. It was nearby where I was at, thought they might have some more durable boots than what I had (one of those places that sell army surplus stuff) so I went in. It was one of those outfits that sell “liberal tears” gun oil and shit. Lotta signage about how they didn’t allow people with masks. And in the back, on the wall, I shit you not, was a huge backlit poster of three guys from the shop recreating the shot from Boondock Saints where Rocco is between the brothers and they’re pointing guns at the camera. I’m still cringing.

Hard To Gwil

Wait, so Billy Connolly killed Kurt Cobain?

Casey Holmes

Some of the Dafoe / Smecker voice has real Columbo energy both in the cadence and mannerisms and it made this a VERY different experience for me lol.

Zerox

I work with someone who has these tattoos. I told him I was watching this movie and he was so excited.

RonnieSoak

Anyone else got kind of excited for a police procedural with the trio of moron cops, trying to catch a giant "serial-crusher" who's signature weapon is a toilet? He could be called Lavatory Larry. Or Loo Looney Lou.

Justin Blackwood

I didn't see this until after I joined the army (2000). Walking down the barracks hallway you would hear many things. In at least two rooms were guys yelling on the phone with their significant others back in the states. At least two rooms would be loud fucking of some girl they met out on the town. At least one playing good ol Nu Metal lol and somewhere Boondock Saints would be on... Ok I lied the it would be on in the common room and we would be playing maybe Conflict Desert Storm and drinking our asses off! But this movie was right up our alley, a bunch of 18-22 year old kids in Germany and full of testosterone and stupid, so yeah we watched the shit out of it. So glad we didn't have social media really back then

Justin Blackwood

How much you want to bet he has one of the tats on him?

Justin Blackwood

Sounds like places where Im from (Northwest Florida). Do these people really not see how unbelievably cringe they are??

Justin Blackwood

Fuck adolescence, a lot of young adults took to this movie too, but we were all right out of basic training and still stupid as hell

Rhea

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang mention 🥰 Eric you must watch Chernobyl immediately

Edmund Lewis

You guys doing this movie on this day, of ALL DAYS, is text book Anti-Irish bigotry!!! We won’t be bowin’ down to you Podcasters no more!! 🍀🍀🍀

Edmund Lewis

Yeah, you didn’t know that? Courtney Love & Jeffrey Epstein hired Billy Connelly to off Kurt. SAD!!!

Edmund Lewis

Thank you for writing that. I knew they had the story wrong, but wasn’t sure on the specifics

Edmund Lewis

That’s cuz Duffy is “Irish” in the American Gen X/Millennial guy sense: i.e.- who tells you, especially if you are black, that “ya know the Irish were treated WORSE than slaves, bro!”- in a bar.

Edmund Lewis

Remember the part where he’s screaming on the phone about how much he hates Keanu Reeves, Jon Bon Jovi, and basically EVERY male star of the late 90’s? Unbelievable that that guy didn’t make it in Hollywood. (Also the “the keep JEWING ME on the budget!” scene. Troy Duffy- all class!)

Edmund Lewis

Nah, he probably hates the Irish cuz the Republic of Ireland is “too woke”.

Felipe Sobreiro

I thought Chelsea and James were supposed to be in all of these Leprechaun episodes

jribs

Point Break or Bad Boys 2?

Zack Gillespie

Thank you Eric for letting me off the hook, “it’s ok to like a movie.” 😁

Todd B

On the one hand, this one rolled off me. On the other, I did own a copy of Suicide Kings, so I can't throw stones.

Gone

St. Louis here. They definitely don’t. I think their marquee sign out front said something about how China was coming to get us.

Rose Esposito

I guess Troy Duffy couldn't be bothered to look it up when he was clickety-clacking and waiting for his mom to bring the pizza rolls or whatever we've decided this scenario was!

Christopher Oxentine

I haven't thought about this movie since I saw it in theaters.

David Thompson

First time watch... I kinda liked it 🙈

Justin Blackwood

Of course, that would take some actual self responsibility and reflection. Cue the Are We The Baddies meme

Justin Blackwood

Surprised in that area it wasn't some Red Dawn shit lol

Matt

ELITE ball knowledge

Albert C

Saw this as it was meant to be seen: on DVD playing on a tiny CRT in the dorm room of a girl I had a crush on who insisted I need to see it.

johnny stocker

lol, I swear to God I wrote that post before I listened to the episode and heard the guys make the exact same Hegseth observation. Too funny.

Matt

optimal viewing environment

Zeb Hammond

By the power of Grayskull...

Craig

Hot Fuzz manages to be a parody of an action flick and a fun action flick at the same time. Hard to pull off (See also: Galaxy Quest)
