On this special patron-curated episode of Animation Damnation, we're talking about the first episode of the new-ish anime, Delicious in Dungeon!

The show kicks off with this episode, "Hot Pot/Tart," which dropped on January 4, 2024, which features our party, made up of Laios the brave warrior, Marcille the elven spell caster, and Chilchuck, a hobbit-esque locksmith, meet up with the Senshi, a dwarf who really, really knows how to get down with some monster cooking! They set out on their adventure down into the dungeon to save Laios's sister from the red dragon and along the way string up a dead man's corpse for some reason!

Delicious in Dungeon features the voice talents of Kentarô Kumagai, Sayaka Senbongi, Asuna Tomari, Saori Hayami, and Hiroshi Nana as Senshi.

I totally love this show, I've watched the first season twice now. This is one that it's hard to do a single episode for, even the first one, because going into it, yeah, it's an anime, which means it's almost always gonna be about long, serialized storytelling. But MAN does the food look GOOD. I think only Studio Ghibli does better cartoon food.

Just watched the first episode and quite enjoyed it. I'm not much of an anime fan, but this was fun. And of course the food looked great.

Started watching this on a whim a couple months ago and got hooked. The world building is really deep and just kind of makes me what to know more and more

Thanks to Andrew, now I’m sittin here thinking about what protein pairs well with Jason-Kimchi 🍲

I would thought Steve’s new “Roku” knuckle tattoos would’ve given away his tv preferences.

what does this even mean

I did not expect you guys to cover this one of all things! I do think your interpretations were a bit different from what I expected, but I also am aware it's all first impressions and, like you guys say, it's okay to like (or dislike) a movie. Like when you talked about Marceille's attitude towards the whole act of eating monsters, it's because she's also acting as the grounding device towards what normal people would think-- It's not uncommon, I mean Berserk began with Puck basically to tell everyone "no, I don't condone the main character ultra murdering everything." I guess it also emphasizes character development that none of you had anything to say about the other two/three characters, one of whom is also the impetus for them even doing all of this and the other is indifferent. The Guy Fieri comparison of Senshi felt funny to me because a lot of the series made me feel the same way I was watching Anthony Bourdain's show. There was one episode that stuck with me where he was offered iguana and that one guy who seemed willing to try anything absolutely HATED it; every time I think of the attitude towards dungeon cuisine it makes me think of that episode. Just one random additional: I appreciate how much of the food tries hard to resemble real-life contemporary recipes. The fruit tart for example is very similar to a historical pumpkin pie recipe I once saw on Tasting History where they used the pumpkin as the crust.

Shoutout from here in the slums of Roku City! Literally scrolling across my tv screen right now 😅

James C Harris

Roku City sounds like a failed noir TV pilot

I think Food Ward - Shogeki no Soma might be more your speed... or not

Sealbro

lol the boys only got 30 minutes out of this one huh

Brandon Gorin

This is a very charming episode.

“What even is this series?” -The Action Boyz fan

Brandon Taper

I haven't yet listened to the episode, but I can totally see why the anime was suggested by a listener. This show's ENTIRE conceit is like a more heartfelt exploration of the gang's long-running bit whenever they cover a creature feature or space gremlin movie: "How do you think it tastes?"

Sealbro

I enjoyed this! the manga is one of my favorites of all time-- hard to get a "taste" for the quality of the world building and storytelling Kui pulls off later on with just one episode. I appreciate the guys taking a bite tho! wow, food puns are easy

Busiris

This whole episode is worth it based solely on the extended conversation about Freddy vs. Jason, which one is preferred as a meal and the styles of preparation that could be used. C'est magnifique! 👌

oldmetalpossum

Just wanted to point out that in addition to her own picky eating habits the author was also inspired by the RPG series Wizardry, hence the game-ish elements in the series, albeit not explicitly DnD inspired

Zach Hughes

I don’t recall you gents covering any anime. This is an odd one to tackle for the fist, but it feels like great material for y’all

John Edwards

Andrew's spot on about them trying to give the series a very video game feeling, to the point that they got Yasunori Mitsuda, a highly regarded Japanese composer who's worked on a host of big RPGs, to do the OST. It creates a specific sort of background ambience that's instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up with the SNES or PS1.

Mark D Myers

Proud resident of roku city.

Daniel Hood

They've done Dragonball Z and Pokemon before multiple times

John King

Resident Evil: Roku City

I’ll never be able to see Freddy again without thinking about the taste of his crispy flesh
