“Just tell me there’s an alien ship that’s putting time juice in them…” - Eric

On this week’s episode, the 2026 Listener Request Month comes to a close with a chat about the Andrew Niccol sci-fi head-scratcher, In Time!

Would this make more sense if they were robots? How about vampires? Should this just have been a vampire movie? Why is everyone in this movie driving a classic car? Should this film have just followed Cillian Murphy’s character around? Is Timberlake an action lead? And what in the world is going on with all the Time Arm Wrestling? PLUS: The time detectives raid the house of the old lady from The Fugitive!

In Time stars Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Shiloh Oostwald, Johnny Galecki, Ray Santiago, Matt Bomer, Zuleyka Silver, Laura Ashley Samuels, Alex Pettyfer, and Cillian Murphy as Raymond Leon; directed by Andrew Niccol.

Ooof. That was a tough watch.

This film reeks of writers that took that same massive bong rip before they wrote the butterfly effect. “What if time actually equalled money bro you ever think about that?”

Darcy MacDonald

I will never watch this. Never heard of it, even. But...Johnny Galecki in a WHM pick!? I dedicate my next two hours to the whiff of potential.

Robert

I love Steve and Chris’ beef over the Industry

RJ Cunningham

So I can pay off these debts AND shorten my mortal coil? They really missed the utopian aspect of it all

Kevin Lynch

Logan’s Run cut off is 30 years and I don’t think it’s explained in the movie but it’s a play on the Hippie mantra of “Don’t Trust Anyone Over 30”

Jason

This movie reminds me most of that vampire film Daybreakers in some odd way. Although not great, at least the blood as oil metaphor made a bit more sense.

RJ Cunningham

Why did the "ghetto girl" need the 5 mins from Timberlake if the countdown doesn't begin until age 25? Adults can use children's time for currency? or else what purpose would her having 5 extra minutes do if she can't give it away. But if she can.....stories of parents sucking the souls out of their newborn babies please. Seems some visual symbolism toward vampirism could have worked. Also I stopped paying attention after the 50th run away with Timberlake shooting airsoft guns scene so maybe they explained it after. Timberlake had to start trying to act more action-hero'ish as it went on and it was laughably bad at times.

A profoundly stupid movie... But I did like the uncommented detail that the cars seem to be all electric? In a world where rich people live forever, of course they solved that shit immediately.

Calvin Lindfors

This is a movie I wanted to like a lot more than I actually like it. I once had an argument with an idiot dorm mate in college who thought this movie was apolitical. Not that it was badly executed(it is), but that it didn't have anything to say politically(it does, it's super obviously about wealth inequality). What a frustrating and mindboggling argument where I had to defend a movie I barely even made it tjrough awake.

Frank Grimes

I’m glad you guys mentioned that this would work better as a series. That was the thought I had about it. The world this movie takes place in needs more time to be explained.

DMAC

Better movie idea: go with the poker playing aspect and have the "time keeping" arm damaged and glitch out so randomly Justin Timberlake goes from having all the time to a little and randomly just "dies" make it a search for a tech support guy and a Maverick (Mel Gibson movie) like journey.

WarOfTheBees

I'll fix this movie in one step: it's animated. They're all living clocks. Bada bing Bada boom, you got a mid-range Dreamworks or Pixar CGI thing to take the kids to for an hour and a half movie. Shit, you could even keep the cast.

Jason

Are we sure this wasn’t an elaborate scheme for Steve to steal time from his cohosts?

Tony King

This movie is dumb, but like Andrew, it's my kinda dumb. I agree that JT doesn't really work as a lead, but I really like Amanda Seyfried, and although it's stupid, I actually quite like the concept. I do think this would work better as a TV series, to help flesh out the world. I would absolueltely watch that, and probably get really into it.

Josh Brooks

Catch ‘em in BED with a timekeeper

profondo robbo

I figure this story done from the Timekeepers' perspective would probably turn out like Equilibrium, which is technically better than this? At least it makes a better case for why its dystopia is so sterile. I also want to shout out Daybreakers, which seems like the "everyone's a vampire" dystopia movie you suggested. Could be a Stay Tuned?

John Edwards

I have a strange relationship with In Time because it's one of the only films that I know with certainty I've seen in its entirety, but I could not tell you for the life of me how I watched it. I think it might've been in the twilight period between Blockbuster closing down and me getting Netflix, so I probably ended up doing something ungodly like renting it on Youtube, but I seriously couldn't say.

Robin Saraksen LB2UI

Saw this several times as a teenager + clockstoppers and it made me hate movies with a time gimmick. DOESNT MAKE SENSE!!!!

Dan Holbrook

The Tommy Boy "This will only take a second!" scene but in this universe

Brandon Taper

How does this very real movie look just like the same director's very fake movies in S1M0NE?

Brandon Taper

And the director of Clockstoppers? None other than Number One himself, Big Bad Frakes!

Amberwing Tundrawing

Could've called the slums "The Lost Time Zone", and have the rich people make some jokes about it being named after all the robberies going down
