“Alex Murphy is made for her pleasure!” - Steve on the new suit design

On this week’s show, we bring Remake-ril to a close with a chat about one of the worst Hollywood remakes of all time, RoboCop (2014)!

Why did we need the “slick” new suit design? Why didn’t they bother with any of the TV stuff like in the ’87? Why did we need to have the wife and son be such larger characters? Was Joel Kinnaman right for Murphy? And speaking of Murphy, why are so many people calling him by his first name in this movie? Did any other film waste Michael Kenneth Williams’ talent as much as this one did? And what in WORLD were they thinking going for the PG-13 rating? PLUS: “Dr. Norton? Commissioner Gordon. Commissioner Gordon? Dr. Norton…”

RoboCop (2014) stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Samuel L. Jackson as Pat Novak; directed by José Padilha.

It's funny, this was my second time watching this after first seeing it in theaters and I realized about 90 minutes in this time....propulsive score with strings going faster and faster, slick urban surroundings handsomely shot, overqualified supporting cast members given nothing to do but look concerned, on-the-nose dialogue, lots of cross-cutting, and Gary Oldman playing VERY earnest while barking orders and warnings at everyone else.....this was them trying to do Christopher NOLAN'S Robocop! 😆 Once you notice it in thd third act, you can't unnotice it....not a bad movie overall, just kind of unnecessary. And it doesn't hold a candle to the original of course.

God I hope they rip on Jay Baruchel more than the movie... I hate how much I love this movie, it has so many flaws and missing all the cool, badass vibes from the original, but it's a take on one of the best fictional characters ever created, RoboCop rules! 🍻 Cheers y'all

Donovan Stole

Wooooooodoggy! I love everything about it.

David

When Padhila was announced as director of this movie I had... some hope it would turn out ok? . . . Anyway I was wrong. Aronofsky was attached to this one for a while too. I still don't think his version would be touching Verhoeven's, but at least there would have been some interesting body horror going on in there.

Eren Keskin

I wouldn't buy that for a dollar

MarkNM

I get the "world building" (lol) in this one mixed with that of GAMER, to the point that I expect Michael C Hall to show up. Thankfully he and his damn bare feeeeeet aren't here. Terrible movie with the one good scene of the body reveal but, hey, always nice to see Jackie Earle getting face time and a check.

Jason

The film could've done with a few interludes about a weird gooner pervert that was just obsessively tugging it to Robocop.

MarkNM

Hey hey I grew out of that.

Jared Linder

Robocop (in the origianl movie) was developed to replace cops who were striking due to under funding and too much on the job danger. He was very much "robots will take our jobs" and not just an anti facist symbol. And it can be seen all the way down to the fact that he only requires electricity and a small amount of nutrient paste to function and no pay. OCP made him as a way of showing the cops they needed to get in line or not only be replaced, but be used as parts for their own replacement.

Kuato (and the freedom brigade)

Lol I didn't look close enough at the description in the show drops and watched the original. No complaints 😂

Billie Jackson

Pat Novak, the Jack Webb old time radio character that also had at least one movie back in the day? That's such an odd character name choice, especially for Samuel L Jackson. Is Kinnamon better in his overseas film and TV series work? He was miscast but okay in season one of Altered Carbon.

Rod

Last time I heard the boys talk about Robocop they were also skewering TX porn lawns in the first 5 minutes

Tim O'

I saw this in the theater and I have no memory of it whatsoever. Samuel L. Jackson's in this?! Dire stuff.

MarkNM

Dude, seriously. I saw this trailer countless times. I watched it during lockdown. I even read the WHM synopsis RIGHT UP THERE. And 30 minutes into the episode they mention Michael Keaton and I was like ohhhhhhh right he was in this.

Billie Jackson

Meet Dave was originally written by Bill Corbett from MST3K and Rifftrax iirc.

Matthew Lloyd

Initially I thought the film was trying to say something about police militarisation and how crime is actually dropping so there's no need for all this crazy stuff, but no it didn't.

Rose Esposito

Cabin coming in hot with the celeb goss about Abbie Cornish and Ryan Phillippe! 🔥 I did love her in Bright Star, but we will never forget the messiness. EDIT: "It appears in your latest set of photos you have dumped Greg." 😂 'Married Creep/Incel Instagram-Stalking Hot Younger Woman' is my absolute fave niche WHM character. Fire emoji.

Busiris

Big time agree when they mention that the Samuel L. Jackson stuff looks like a Capital One commercial. There's one part where he says (paraphrasing) "I have just one question for you..." and I whispered under my breath: "What's in your wallet?"

Ben Sharpe

You need to have the saved Clarance Bodickers body from the orignal Robocop movie and they turned him into a Cyborg like Cain. Now you got a movie

I.C. Weiner

Takes them about ten more minutes to get there this time

Ronnie Gardocki

I'm really enjoying him in the (yes) Detective Hole show on Netflix. He doesn't have to pretend to be American so that's a plus.

Hot take: Gamer is a better movie than RoboCop 2014

I worked for Netflix at the time when their call center was based in Hillsboro, OR just outside of Portland. I can't remember if I had a disc or it was on streaming which they used to call "Watch Instantly." I got maybe 20 mins into it and then said "wait, I should just watch the 1987 cinematic masterpiece instead." So I did that and have no regrets. Much like the Total Recall remake, you got talented people together who made a very good looking movie but it feels flat and dishonest.

I mean, everybody looked like shit in the 70s because half the country gunned 3 packs of smokes a day, and the other half were constantly in rooms where a bunch of people were gunning 3 packs of smokes a day.
