On this month's We Love Movies, the gang is chatting about the most excellent Spike Lee heist picture, Inside Man! How horny is Denzel in this? Why didn't Christopher Plummer move that nazi gold sooner? And let's all agree that under any other director, this movie is nowhere near as great. PLUS: Spike gives the best answer of all time to the dumbest question of all time! WHM is donating 100% of our 2020 merch income to causes fighting for racial justice. For more information on how you can pitch in, head over to our website.

Inside Man stars Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe, and Chiwetel Ejiofor; directed by Spike Lee.

Eric angrily saying "Shut the fuck up" in this episode is a top 5 WHM moment for me.

“Hey, Spike, you’re going to the bathroom? Mind if I join you? By the way, I’m bringing my leeches, I hope you don’t mind.” -Defoe

My dudes. It's OK to like a movie, but Inside Man is not a good film. It's SO wanky, Clive Owen is doing a bad accent and his character is trash Bad Boy Cool, Jodie Foster has a weird rictus grin the whole time, and what was with that awful rolling platform shot of Denzel that they're so proud of they put it behind the end credits? Nah.

First film to shoot in NYC after 9/11 was "Sweet Home Alabama". "25th Hour" was the 3rd. Also, this film's edtor was longtime Spike collaborator Barry Alexander Brown!

The rolling platform shot is a Spike Lee trademark, he puts some version of it in just about every movie he makes to communicate a character being overwhelmed emotionally. Think along the lines of the dolly-zoom when Brody first sees the shark in Jaws.

I've been going through the movies of Andre De Toth this year and Crime Wave is SO GOOD

The Inside Man is one of the better films of that year. It really is a throwback to those 1970s NYC crime dramas theme-wise but with Spike's sprinkle of flavor on it. Clive Owen isn't doing an accent; he is speaking close to his normal pattern. Chiwetel Ejiofor is speaking in a fake accent and is the only part that doesn't fit in this otherwise perfect movie. Omar Epps, Bookeem Woodbine, or Wood Harris would have brought that extra little something to make it fully NYC.

I get the feeling that you and the WHM guys have a bit of rose tinted glasses for this film as a love letter to NYC, or whatever colour they'd be. Blue-tinted? The NYC setting might be on point, it might be nostalgic, it might give the warm fuzzies, but for someone to whom that means nothing, this is film is OK at best.

Native NY'er here, I agree with you despite that fact. I think I found okay-to-decent when it came out. Had problems with Foster, maybe one or two other elements I can't recall. I rewatched it later and deep sighed my way through it.

I get the feeling that you are judging this film by a whole different set of standards that you aren't sharing with everyone else. Objectively you are off on everything you pointed out.
