On this month's very special We Love Movies episode, the guys are chatting about one of the all-time great film comedies—and yes, it's certainly a comedy—Ghostbusters! How much of a drag is it to learn that Winston's role was originally much larger? Are there ghosts causing mischief outside the five boroughs or is it just NYC's problem? Whose idea was the ghost beej? And how dreadful does this new one look? PLUS: How much of a nuisance is Louis Tully at those tenant board meetings?

Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton, David Margulies, and Jordan Charney as Hey! Dean Yeager!; directed by Ivan Reitman. Thanks so much for supporting We Hate Movies on Patreon! Be sure to spread the word about what we're doing on here! New to this. I like the commentary, but it's hard to get through all the bed wetting about Afterlife.

J HEASLEY

Ray's private sector work was under an assumed name with the Cia in spies like us.

Ray,thisisWalter

I heard a video essay once that theorized that this movie has a pro-Libertarian voice and now I can't unsee it.

Kureigu

There was only two things about the female ghostbusters movie I didn't like and that was Bill Murrays sceptic character not coming back as a ghost (seemed like the best joke for that character) and the musical bit being cut from the movie and moved to the credits ( the scenes around where its meant to be end up a weird jump cut without it) other than that I liked it.

Billie Jackson

I also used to watch The Joe Franklin show, on WOR, iirc. It always did have kind of a weird vibe. I also watched the Tortellis, which was almost painful to sit through. Once something is worse than Joseph Bologna and Matt LeBlanc's Married with Children spinoff Top of the Heap it's truly remarkably terrible.

Billie Jackson

Atherton's character is actually right. They have a completely unregulated, not at all secured nuclear reactor in Manhattan. Doc Brown's Libyan connection should have just stopped by to pick it up.

Dave Waters

"I collect molds, spores and pussy" had my DYING laughing in my car.

Eric Rational

Many years ago, WHM finally convinced me that Ghostbusters 2 is a bad movie (that I still love). Can't wait to start this WLM and maybe get a rewatch in this weekend.

Frank Grimes

Hell yeah. WHMin makes me feel good

Beatrix

My favorite comedy of all time. Thank you.

Jake Welsh

Friday night's looking up now. Thank you all.

Hercules

haven't listened yet, but thanks anyway, gang! this is exactly the pick-me-up i need

WarOfTheBees

That librarian ghost was way more than 5 year old me could handle

Jake Welsh

But can Eric top "pee-pee floppy cock" as a catchphrase?

David Thompson

At least once a year for me, can't imagine not watching for a decade!

chris pike

The Marx Brothers film they referenced was actually, A Night at the Opera.

James Boyd

Eric = Venkman, Chris = Stanz, Andrew = Egon, Steve = Winston

P.S. Munson

Thanks for this episode guys! This movie is one of my favorites. Can't wait to listen to this episode. P.s. I also need to write into the Mailbag and let you know about the time I literally shit my pants while listening to your Ghostbusters 2 episode. Thanks again.

Zach Samborski

I actually purchased the novelization to the movie 'End of Days' around the time that movie came out. I was that much of a die-hard Arnold fan back then, and I can distinctly remember thinking "this movie's gonna be so fucking edgy" while I read. Fun times.

Tony King

Aw yes! Time for another rewatch before listening. One of my absolute favourite movies.

J HEASLEY

Holy shit! Give afterlife a minute. It isn't even out yet. Fuck.

mcb505

You guys jest, but if you started a new tier with a Gleep Glossary-style "Tobin's Spirit Pod" sideshow, I'd be here for that in a big way.

Leesha Olivier

I saw thus movie 13 times in theaters the summer of 1984. I was 12, and there was nothing else to do. Fat kid summer with Spengler, Venkman, Zeddemore, and Stantz as counselors. It was awesome.

Jarrod Hornbeck

You mentioned Moranis’ improvised lines during the party scene, but you didn’t catch one that is now one of my favorite jokes in the movie as an adult with somewhat of an understanding of finances. When he introduces Ted and Annette Fleming he says “Ted has a small carpet cleaning business in receivership and Annette’s drawing a salary from a deferred bonus from two years ago.” So, instead of just introducing the guests, he basically tells a room of strangers that the woman doesn’t work and that the man has a government lien on his business to avoid bankruptcy. I did not understand this joke when I was young, and it finally clicked more recently I freaking howled.

Jack

i dunno man, objecting to a cynical cash grab featuring the CGI likeness of a beloved dead actor seems like a valid opinion to me

Jarrod Hornbeck

I don’t think they’re gatekeeping. They’ve repeated ad nauseam that they like the 2016 movie, which most Ghostbusters fans deemed a national emergency at the time. You ever think that maybe the trailers just make the movie look bad? There’s nothing wrong with forming an opinion based on a trailer, particularly when you internet presence deals in hyperbole. If this felt like a new fad and not weird bet-hedging fan service they’d probably be kinder. I did not think at any point during their mentions of the upcoming film that they were gatekeeping.

Smaug

"Thinking a movie looks bad" is not what I hear in the criticisms, regardless of how they feel about the 2016 movie. The criticisms are "this movie is a nepotistic cashgrab that could not possibly compare to MY experience of the original." That's gatekeeping. No one knows anything about this new movie beyond the trailers, but conclusions are being drawn far beyond those little bits. When I hear the WHM folks talk about trailers, it's usually relegated to the content of the trailer, ie Chris will often say, "that trailer looks dumb as shit," or "these actors sure don't look as good in this movie as they did in their previous work," etc. GB: Afterlife is being criticized here based solely on a comparative basis to their experience of the original movie

Andrew B

The need for standing up for this new movie in here is embarrassing. Also the endless regurgitation of IP isn’t just for the kids. It’s aimed at us, and it’s more than okay to rip on how shameless and uncreative 95% of Hollywood is. Enjoy the episode people, your franchises will keep churning out the same old shit. Not even the grand power of 4 guys talking about movies can stop that. Unless perhaps they say “Do not worry about ___”

Jarrod Hornbeck

I disagree with that completely. I don’t for one second believe these guys give a shit about their original experience of the original movie. Non of them were old enough to have even seen it until Ghostbusters 2 was out. The real gatekeeping you see is from dudes 10 years older that these guys. “Conclusion are being drawn from those little bits.” Congratulations on finally discovering reactionary internet criticism. The movie looks like a narcissist cash grab, from the trailer. There’s no way what’s being presented is an attempt to gain new fans, despite whatever you want to tell yourself. This exists for 48 year old dads to elbow nudge their kids, and it doesn’t look particularly interesting. If I’m wrong, and it’s great- wonderful. I feel no personal ownership over this property. If they remake it 40 times, great. I’m sure these guys feel the same. If you’re excited for the movie- awesome. Go, enjoy it, love it. But don’t assume that people claiming something looks hollow or dumb based on the trailers is gatekeeping.

Smaug

"I don’t for one second believe these guys give a shit about their original experience of the original movie" I guess maybe the two of us just listened to different 2 and half hour programs in which the hosts described how much they love this movie and their experiences with it over the entire course of their lives

Jarrod Hornbeck

Nah, man. I’m 40. I love this movie as much as a child. It’s peppered my life in many ways. I have no problem whatsoever with the property being tooled and retooled, etc. I don’t think they do either. The problem is…why bother tying it to the original? You can’t tell me that this movie is aimed at pulling in a new audience. It looks (and I’ll admit - looks) like it really towing the line of unnecessary fan service. That’s part of why the Many Saints of Newark sucked. It’s a tough line to tow, and do well. I agree that you’re probably right in 90% of instances, but I think you’re projecting onto the gang here.

Smaug

Perhaps it's worth considering the verbiage you just used to describe the new movie. "The problem is…why bother tying it to the original?" Why is it automatically a "problem" for you that this movie is tied to the original if you're as magnanimous about your experience of the original as you say? It's only a "problem" if our desire at the outset is to not upset or devalue the original, which is what gatekeeping is

Jarrod Hornbeck

But that’s not correct. It is really hard to make a fan service movie that’s good. If the goal is make a good movie and appeal to a new fan base, by all means, do that. But it seems clear this movie is being made to appeal to fans of the original. Which, again, is not a problem in concept, but very difficult to do well. I don’t think it will ‘devalue’ the original no matter how bad it is. And if it is bad, I’ll watch it, walk away, watch the original and still enjoy it just as much.

Jarrod Hornbeck

I think it’s worth noting that we do agree in spirit that gatekeeping, as you described it, is bad and toxic. I, personally, don’t feel that’s what we’re hearing here, but I digress. I don’t care at all about the sanctity of the original. My childhood will not be affected one iota whether the movie is amazing or unwatchable. I think the trailer looks bad. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong. There are certainly a lot of people who gatekeeping, *almost to the level of 2016 all-female remake. It’s a very gross trait. I sincerely hope every generation gets their own version of this property to cherish.

Eren Keskin

Fun fact: That library ghost was designed by the horror comic book legend Bernie Wrightson.

Eren Keskin

Bustin' makes me feel good.

WarOfTheBees

Public service announcement: The Ghostbusters video game, which features all the original cast besides Moranis and was written using Ramis's and Akroyd's work on Ghostbuster 3's unmade script (they also have writing credits but I dunno how much they actively wrote) is available digitally on Xbox and Playstation. If you want an "authentic" Ghostbusters movie, whatever that means, this is it.

Adam Hughes

They barely talk about the movie

Drew Stewart

He's an accountant! He actually doesn't know anything about them personally! It's so great.

John Locke

You guys have now made me want to watch the new Ghostbusters movie. It's going to be a beautiful train wreck.

Return of The Mac 2nite

Hey Andrew in 6th Day you were thinking of America that uses blankets to pretend stock is there when it isn’t. Get your white American head out of your ass and stop lying about nations you have no clue about

Drew Stewart

The “Tobin’s Spirit Guide” is a franchise tie-in, the entries are all from the first two movies, the video game, and the IDW comic.

Tyler

Note: Winston is actually the first to be asked if he's ok. Ray asks him before the come out from hiding.

Mark D Myers

The only places that should be getting new Ghostbusters products are the toy store and the comic shop.

Dan Mayer

How the subject of ghost YouTube could be discussed and nobody said Boo-Tube is beyond me.
