On the season 14 premiere of We Hate Movies, VHS Trailer Game champion, Eric Szyszka demands the guys go back and re-do an episode on the much maligned (and unfairly so?) prequel that started it all, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace! How on Earth did the producers let Lucas get away with these abhorrent Trade Federation characters? What was with the awful Gungan speech pattern? Why did they have to make Anakin the product of Immaculate Conception? And wasn’t this movie better with the puppet Yoda? PLUS: Cliegg Lars contracts a nasty Hutt STD!

A thought I had when y'all mentioned about how the generation gap between those who liked the prequels as kids vs the older ones who didn't , I remembered really confusing my nephew a few years ago with the OG cut of A New Hope because he grew up with all the changed releases and he was so perturbed not seeing Jabba or that Hayden showing up in RotJ. Feel like that's gonna be a weird thing going forward that the original cut is gonna be lost and possibly forgotten about by those same youngsters that grew up with those changes.

I always thought Destroyer Droids were rad as a youth and it bugged me they didn't feature more in the movies. I think they transition from being able to take on Jedi to getting one shotted by clones.

Iain McCaig, the creator of Darth Maul who also did many designs for Padme(her red dress being the most famous) deserves as much credit as John williams imho. He's a big deal in the designer circles. Apparently he wanted Padme to secretly plan to kill Anakin during their confrontation in Revenge of the Sith.

A note on Peter Serafinowicz: he’s a full-on Star Wars fan and was quite vocal about his hatred for The Phantom Menace. He thought it was ridiculously shite. I also vaguely remember him talking openly somewhere about pirating it. But I might have imagined that. Anyway, I think they might have replaced him later (in the animated shows etc) as a result.

In regards Terrence Stamp working on the movie. Apparently he had no interest until he found out he was working with Natalie Portman so eh....yeah. He did the movie because he had "a crush" on her. (His words) so somebody call David Bowie. (Joking aside, fucking hell she was creeped on back then)

Re-listening to this episode again today the palpatine convo stood out to me , I had never heard/seen anything where the audience wasn't supposed to know sidious and palpatine were same person? The Whole point of his disguise was for the plot that none of the in universe characters know they are the same person. Even maul doesn't know who he really is based on a lot of the (now legends i guess) comics and novels at the time .
