Hell yeah, forgot about this movie! Y’all would get a lot out of ‘The Perfect Storm’ with Mark Wahlberg as well. Hits hard.

I love this movie. It's got a lot of flaws, but it checks so many of the disaster movies boxes so perfectly, lol, you gotta love it. Have y'all watched The Towering Inferno (1974)? I'm sure others have recommended it to you as well, since it's like THE disaster movie, lol. Even if you watch it off-channel, please do it.

AniLunchbox

Personally I would have just watched the original. Also surprised you haven't watched one of the OGs of disaster in The Towering Inferno. It's a must.

I agree, the original Poseidon Adventure is a better film. The 2006 version is a poor remake. The original Poseidon Adventure was nominated for 8 Academy Awards. It also starred the late great Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and Shelley Winters. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) - IMDB: 7.2 Poseidon (2006) - IMDB: 5.7

Donna Castellano

Definitely. I've seen every version of TPA (and read the original book) and nothing compares to the Gene Hackman one. I watch it every New Year's Eve.

Donna Castellano

Commented above that the original version of this - with the late great Gene Hackman - is superior. But if y'all wanna get into boat disasters, have you seen Ghost Ship (2002)? It's a seriously underrated little horror/thriller. Karl Urban is one of the stars. And the opening is fuckin WILD.

I’m glad you guys will watch the original film as well. Infinitely better, and you’ll love the classic filmmaking and practical effects so much. Poseidon, the remake, is not a well regarded film, and because they spent so much money making it it’s one of the biggest flops in box office history. Also, and I promise I’m not being critical as I love you guys, Dante’s Peak is still sitting in the corner decomposing waiting for you to watch it if you’re going to continue with disaster films lol.

Throughout this movie I was thinking about the actual disaster that occurred on September 28, 1994, when the M/S Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea, killing 852 people (only 137 people were rescued). (I’ll leave a link of an English article about it at the end). I only have 2 fears (that can happen IRL) that I can’t handle 1. tight spaces where I can’t move (like getting stuck in a pipe or smth) and 2. DROWNING.. My heart rate was so high throughout this movie because I was just imagining the people on “Estonia” having most likely similar experiences (not the action ones, but being trapped/drowning etc.) and some of it felt so real. Compared to like Titanic, M/S Estonia sank in leas than 1 hour!! The link below feels like the inspiration to this movie, although I know it’s not. https://ctif.org/news/30-years-have-passed-bow-detached-estonia-ferry-852-people-drowned-less-one-hour

Since you'll be watching this and The Poseidon Adventure, may I recommend you follow it up with a hoot of a movie called Deep Rising, which is like this but with the added element of sea monsters and Famke Janssen. It's also directed by Stephen Sommers, who directed The Mummy! Cheesy fun. I highly recommend!!

DEEP RISING .. a AWESOME Choice, Hopefully Ari & Denise choose to React to it & If so, they should also, consider Reacting to VIRUS (1999) with Jamie Lee Curtis & Donald Sutherland (RIP, a True Acting Legend) .. another FUN Ride ‼️

Yeah I can see that, the character development dropped off so hard and it's just shallow in terms of payoff of character arcs and really knowing these people, but I do love the high tension, sequence of events, chemistry of the cast, and being creative with solving problems on the fly. Unlike Titanic where the characters are loved, easy to sympathize with, and deeply explored to where we could even know these people in real life!

Emperor Raven

Wow the OG sounds special... I gotta get on that! :O

Emperor Raven

Wow I can't wait for them to watch the OG, it really sounds amazing and like a TRUE rival to the epic Titanic!

Emperor Raven

Yeah I totally hear you guys about the underwhelming character development and ultimate payoffs for key character arcs and moments! Like the casting is actually pretty damn solid and the chemistry of the cast is incredible... so it's a crying shame they dropped the ball so freakin' hard on exploring the characters on deeper levels so we could both care for and sympathize with them more! Kurt Russel is amazing as always and he definitely has some hard hitting moments and great interactions with his daughter and her boyfriend in the film, I just wish we got those payoffs like you guys said! Overall I enjoyed the sequence of events, extreme tension under pressure (the film is stressful lol), and the dynamic problem-solving on the fly but the writing and characterization definitely fell short! The character who was in the navy was amazing here and always love seeing Emmy Rossum... she's such a charming, feminine, and graceful actress that really sells her roles!
