PDC717

(Now, if you guys don’t like it I’m going to be so depessed lol.)

Orion's Heavenly Light 🏹🌟

Here I am, it's after 10:30pm on the west coast, on a Tuesday evening, and I just finished watching y'all watch Volcano and was wishing I could watch y'all's reaction to the other volcano movie that fought for the box office in '97—Dante's Peak, which was my personal favorite as a teen, when it came out! 🌋 And, lo & behold...I see a notification that my wish came true!!! Love synchronicities like that and love y'all's reactions to these disaster flicks!

The Media Knights

No freakin' way haha! That is such awesome timing. Many have been asking for this one for a bit so we're glad we get to go back to the disaster flick genre ❤️

Kyutoko

It is finally time... PEAK CINEMA!! I have seen this movie like 200 times, I was obsessed with volcanoes as a kid, so when this came out, I made mom take me to it. I still have my VHS copy, but sadly no VCR anymore. LOL. Now to sit back and see if you enjoy it as much as me. The thing that separates this movie from Volcano, btw love Tommy Lee Jones, is that it's way more scientifically accurate. These are all things that can and do happen during volcanic eruptions. What killed Paul is called a Lahar. Melting ice/snow packs on the mountain cause mudslides that take out entire patches of trees and the resulting mass of water, mud and logs will take out anything in its path. Including bridges. RIP Paul. Also, lol at the Wilhelm scream. But no, RIP Paul.

Kyutoko

Cappuccino! Java! Yes!

Simon

One of my faves! Watched it so many times as a kid; Sarah Connor AND James Bond? Come on lol

Victor Ramos

Read some of the suggestions I sent over a lot of reactions, ( practical magic from the late 70s to late 80s

Camila

YES! Love this movie so much! Can't wait until I get home from work so I can watch your reaction 🎞️🎥

Helion

Oh my god, finally!!!

Robert Durant

Will be watching this tonight. I was hoping after the glory that was Volcano that we would see this one.

Simon

Love that you addressed the weird critic & audience score. I really like Volcano, but Dante’s Peak just feels so much better paced in terms of anticipation, and the character development in DP makes you feel more connected to & fear for the characters. But yes, I also think the bias against disaster films played a part. I mean, just look at any disaster film through the decades, they’re always seen as ‘less’ in terms of filmmaking, even though they probably take even more care and craft than most considered ‘masterpieces’.

PDC717

It’s a legitimately good film.

Donna Castellano

I know yall loved the music but John Frizzell scored the main film, James Newton Howard only did the main theme. Howard was a mentor for Frizzell so that's why you hear Howard's influences in his scoring. I feel like Frizzell is an under appreciated film composer. Thirteen Ghosts, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Teaching Mrs Tingle, etc, - he's done a lot of horror soundtracks. I don't know if you've seen Ghost Ship but his score for that is awesome. He even helped compose a specific lyriced song for a certain scene that's one of my all time favorites. I mean, I can just listen to that outside of the film and it still hits. GS gets crapped one but it's one of my favorite horror movies.

DM DC

Really fun reaction. I love this film. It builds tension really well. It makes you wonder, will this thing actually go up? You know it will because as you say it's a disaster film. But the fact that the scientific evidence is saying Nope. I like that it's simple, as for me I feel like a simple story gives more room for character development. and character interaction. These for me are the things that really carry a film. Plus, the effects in this film are masterful. They really immerse you in this world with an erupting volcano. It's a really great film in my book. I really agree with you both. This film deserves all the love. Glad you both enjoyed it.

Errolowl

"Wait! What are you doing? Get back in there ... I was just joking!!!" LOLOLOL You guys are the absolute best! Fantastic reaction as always 💚

Star1er

Great 90s disaster movie..and plus Sara Connor is in this

Tatiana Ferreira

Yeess finally 😁 next disaster movie "the core" 🥹

Reed James

Ruth is based on Harry Truman who refused to leave Spirit Lodge on Spirit Lake when St. Helens blew in 80 and died. I grew up and live in the shadow of Mt. Rainier. We have signs for Volcano euprtion routes and everything.

SirMadsen

Still one of the best disaster movies to date. Effects hold up as well. Armageddon next? And I would love for you to react to "Hook" with the late great Robin Williams.

Anne-Charlotte Robinson

Finally i saw it with you and i just love all your comments every time. Like when Ari said jump in that water Ruth and swim. And i have to smile and thought to myself o this will be hilarious when she actually gets in the water. And it was. I didn’t mean it, go up again. Haha So next maybe San Andreas thats a good one. I love those disaster-movies. Because its movies and you can enjoy them. My ex once called me in the tv-room and said watch this and on the screen a lots of people was falling out of windows and a big fire roaring behind them. I ask. What movie is this and he said no movie its real I know you like this What i screamed. I don’t want to see real people jumping out of windows to their death. Are you completely insane???? He was of courses thats one of the reason hes my ex. Idiot. I can’t wait for the next one i will watch with you. I rented this for like i said Sweden don’t have a lots if streaming sites and some of them had commercial in the movie. Love you all from Sweden. 🇸🇪

The Media Knights

Sending all the love to Sweden! Thank you for watching this with us. That scene totally caught me off guard 😂 I gotta be careful with what I wish for

The Media Knights

Thank you for watching this with us! Haha yup…made the joke and then watched in horror as it became reality 🤣

The Media Knights

Thank you for joining us! We’re glad you had fun watching this. Glad this film received the love it deserves from fans, it’s a great time!

The Media Knights

Thank you so much for letting us know! In that case we retroactively give John Frizzell the flowers he deserves as well! The score for this is fantastic. It’s menacing, builds with the scene and creates a great atmosphere.

The Media Knights

We gotta start reviewing/criticizing films based on their own merits within a genre. You just can’t compare movies like “Godfather” & “Oppenheimer” with “Scream”, “2012” and “Avengers” it just doesn’t make any sense. And in a world where the critics already have a bias with how they judge based on genre we can’t allow audiences to also fall into that same trap. Everything should be reviewed on its own merits. Horror with the threshold of what constitutes a great horror, disaster with disaster flicks and so on. This movie is NOT a 30% out of 100%. In what world!?

The Media Knights

Hey there Robert! Yup! We still have plenty of disaster flicks on the way 😁 Checking DM!

The Media Knights

Sounds like a great plan! Time to sit back, relax and watch a great flick!

The Media Knights

Really impressed by this film and so glad to hear they kept it as scientifically accurate as possible. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us ❤️

Victor Ramos

Thanks! But not the movie (Practical Magic) with Sandra Bullocks. “THE ELEMENTS THEY USED ON THOSE MOVIES BACK IN THE DAY” :)

Donna Castellano

The Core is great. It's another of those movies that gets crapped on too much when it's actual quality. I can't remember if Ari and Denise watched Armageddon but if they have, it'd be awesome if they could watch its - IMHO - superior twin of the same year, Deep Impact. There's a scene that always gets me, with a helicopter. I've seen this movie tons but that scene ALWAYS gets me! 😭😭

Vancouver, WA is only 1 mile over the Oregon Border. Further, the Cascade Range has several volcanoes lining the range from Northern California to Northern Washington. Mt. Baker, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Tacoma (called Rainier by settlers).

Ofbricks

Mt. Rainier (Mt. Tacoma) is one of the oldest volcanoes on the range. Geologists believe that the mountain is due to blow within the near future. Mt. St Helens blew its top and left a huge crater.

The actress who plays the Ruth, the Grandmother, is also the same actress who plays Katherine in Stargate SG1 (Not the movie).

Ofbricks

A pH of 3.5 is very acidic. Strong Hydrochloric Acid, Sulfuric Acid are examples of acids this strong.

In a government bureaucracy of any kind, there's always a process. Harry is definitely one who skirts the process out of the belief of urgent concern, however, that also means that sometimes, bosses get irritated. Paul's concerns are ABSOLUTELY justified given the lurching that was being done. Now, that's not to say Harry's concerns aren't valid, but ,he needs more hard science to prove his claims to justify the alert...as there are other highers up to pay, plus members of congress who represent that area would be quite angry at such a thing being done without just cause. Then add the litigation.

Ofbricks

COFFEE!!! COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE! Cappuccino...Java! This is the best scene of the whole movie (I live in WA, so I relate).

Ofbricks

Honestly all one can do in a case where intuition and data conflict, is, you gotta make your case with the most scientific of data you can, voice your expert opinion, and let the dice lay where they lay. Honestly, it sucks...but, Paul by any practical measurement is correct in his decision. He has to justify all these expenses.

Ofbricks

Linda Hamilton's action of smelling him, nuzzling him, feeling closeness to him...ABSOLUTELY sells her being a Widow desiring that intimate touch and emotion. Not just carnal sex. She plays the part of her single mom attention-starved widow is done to perfection.

Ofbricks

The example of the pyroclastic cloud/flow shown in this movie is probably one of the most factual-looking eruptions I've seen on screen. Volcanologists praised the realism with minor variations. This also includes the terminology, the scientific explanations, and the overall handling of the topic. One of the best and most underrated disaster movies out there.

Ofbricks

If this truly did happen in the Pacific Northwest, this is a very good idea of what would likely happen with dams...as we use a lot of hydroelectric power.

Ofbricks

A slight plot hole. He's got a compound fracture of the leg. HE WOULD NOT be standing like that in the slightest....and that leg would not be ok...a lot.

Raven Dark

Have to find a way to get access to a copy of this movie. I love Pierce Brosnan in this. I just watched a reaction to a movie I'd love for you guys to react to - The Mist. I think you guys would really appreciate such a fantastic film, and it would make for a hell of a reaction. Not to mention it's a horror with a certain end of the world type feel.

Duarte Dunn

Great watch as always. It's time for 'Daylight'

Greg In East TN

Hey y'all! New guy here. Loved your reaction. I think this is an excellent movie, although you can tell where Hollywood added drama and effects. Being a student of geology, I've spent a lot of time around Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier and other parts of WA and OR. I think much of the portrayal of the eruption and after affects. Many times a volcano will "clear it's throat" before the main eruption. During the main eruption, there is a pyroclastic flow of hot gas, ash, etc., that goes faster than the speed of sound. There is no escaping it. And it is around 1,500 F. Shield volcanoes like Dante's Peak, or the Cascades are not really lava producers. Of course, Hollywood had to make it look that way. The biggest threat besides the pyroclastic flow is lahars. A lahar is the glacier on top melting, any water, trees, dirt, mud, etc. It's the consistency of wet cement and it travels up to 60 mph. Lots of examples of lahars on YouTube. But besides geology, the story was good and the chemistry between the cast was great. Be well, Greg

David Lonewolf Wright

This is like one of the other dueling themed movies in the late 90's between Armageddon and Deep Impact the following year where Armageddon was the bombastic loud entertaining movie and then the slower pace and more deep (pun intended) Deep Impact. I really enjoy the slower paced of the Twin Films, but I have watched Volcano and Armageddon at least twice as many times, if not more.

James Forrest

Good choice guys :) Haven't posted in a while but had to for this.

ThomasMalatesta

I always think of this as one of my favorite "bad movies". Formulaic, predictable, mediocre acting and story telling, that I am thrilled to death every time I see it. Must have watched it a dozen times by now. and remains a staple in my movie collection. Love it. (I admit though, I love the special effect in this one.)

Kitana Mayo

You must watch The Core.

Emperor Raven

This is one of the disaster films I want to see them react to the MOST!
